English Rose Contemporary Edition

Omg. I never see testers out for Yardley but a store in my city re-jigged their perfume section a little bit and lo and behold - testers for the whole line! I only tried this one but I was blown away by how much it resembles Diptyque's Eau Rose EDT. I was about to purchase that one soon, so THANK GOODNESS I got to test this - saved a buttload of money in the process! Longevity is surprisingly decent too considering how little it costs. I can still smell it in the crook of my elbow 3-4 hours later Edit: now some time has passed I'm able to better pick the two apart; they're indeed very similar but Eau Rose is more aquatic and English Rose leans a touch green. I'll be transparent and say I prefer Eau Rose and now my budget allows for it I'll be buying it, but English Rose is a legitimately good dupe, not just "for the price", it just IS, period. It held me over these past two months and I didn't long for Eau Rose in that time, I'm just in the mindset of "I prefer the subtleties of the real thing, so why not buy it now I can?" Despite me making the switch I still maintain that this is an extremely good budget option if you don't want to fork out for the Diptyque!

I have kept Yardley rose soaps around since my childhood. For many years, I had forgotten about the rose soaps but I noticed my husband’s grandmother’s house smelled like Yardley rose soap. My husband expressed May times how much he liked the smell of his grandmother’s house so I ordered the soap on Amazon and gave it to him for a bath and he was so comforted. I stocked up on Yardley rose soap and have a bar in every bedroom drawer to fragrance the clothes and I have several bars in the closet to scent the closet. I have purchased the Yardley English Rose lotion, deodorant and the perfume. I recommend this Yardley scent in all available forms.This is a classic scent for all ages. I think it is especially appropriate with ballet pink dresses or darker paisleys. I wore some sort of soliflore rose perfume as a child especially at Christmas with darker velvet dresses in the 80s so I also associate rose scents with Christmas and winter church festivities. But since my husband so adores the soap, I mostly associate the scent with him and it is comforting to me. It is my romantic love scent, but it is also a scent of comfort, protection, and human connection.

A lovely, fairly complex rose water scent that lifts me up and calms me. I used to have a real hate for rose perfume. My tyrannical nanny wore rose everything and almost ruined it for me. In 2020 I kept hearing that smelling rose could help improve my mood, so I started using Yardley rose soap, cream, powder and quickly added the body mist. I soon forgot about nanny and just started enjoying rose. I usually detest when musk is paired with vanilla, but I love it with rose! It makes it smell so clean and cozy. The body care line is affordable and makes a nice base for other perfumes. I particularly like the cream. It’s rich and the smell lasts. I’ve been traveling without my Yardley so today i treated myself to a little edt bottle to lift my mood. Zero regrets.

I tried this on my wrist the other day and can't stop thinking of it. It's not often a rose perfume actually smells like an actual rose, but this certainly does. I think the added tea note really gives this fragrance the true "tea rose" scent. I can't wait to buy it now. I forgot to mention that I think this reformulation is much better than the original. As it is so reasonably priced, I'll buy a couple to tuck away in case the company re-reformulates and I don't like the result. I've been reading other reviews of the Yardley reformulation of the April Violets which has left many disappointed. Luckily my pre-2015 older version is still pretty full.

I finally tracked this down and purchased a bottle as Yardley products seem to be out of favour in local shops and online (I live in Australia). That would be so sad, because some of us appreciate the Old World Charm of this company. I think it would be a mistake to assume that the new edition of English Rose is basic, one noted and old fashioned. The citrus and tea notes are quite pronounced, but enhance the rose and rose bud, rather than overwhelm it. This is just a delightful fragrance.

This is 80-85% Paul Smith. I have both Yardley and Paul Smith. Yardley is milder, a tad bit sweeter (not really sweet),softer in a sense or more watery if you will. I can smell the stem. It has a very faint Turkish delight rose smell. but so very light. All in all for rose lovers this is amazing, soft and green rose. Paul Smith is brighter, fresher, screechier, but I like it, it's more energizing. Yardley is mellow and calmer. Love it. Can't have enough versions of rose anything ❤️🔥🌹

Exquisite tea rose. Comforting and joyful. Realistic and vivid in the way it combines notes to portray a perfect, natural rose. This rose is so delightful that perhaps it is only a perfumer’s dream of the perfect rose brought to life through perfume. A dream come true. I smell it as a skin scent more than 8 hours later. (I don’t care if it lasts an hour or 8 hours. I can re-apply if I’m in the mood.)

I don’t know how it used to be before and I don’t care how it is not Chloé. I’m wearing it right now and just let me enjoy this affordable pleasure of life without needing to prove anything to anyone. Thank you, Yardley.

My mother owns this and, while she doesn't wear it often, she let me try it... absolutely gorgeous! A true, sweet rose. I must own this! It's hard to get here, though?

lush, pink dewy rose - it's love!

After the dismal Yardley Lily Of The Valley, I was hoping that English Rose would be a more successful blind buy. I needn’t have worried – ER is a much better scent. It is, unsurprisingly, a fairly simple rose scent with good performance. It is not the best rosewater-style soliflore I’ve smelled, and while it is certainly a bargain, so is the likes of Perfumer’s Workshop Tea Rose and Paul Smith Rose, both of which I rate higher than this. Rose is clearly dominant here, but it is enhanced nicely by violet, tea and patchouli in supporting roles. However, ER really reminds me of potpourri – the rose feels dry in texture throughout. ER is, predictably, rosy from initial spray. I get some orange up top, but it isn’t bright or fresh – instead, it is dry, further enhancing the potpourri quality. The herbal tea note adds some greenness to the rose as it develops. After a little while, it becomes somewhat powdery, with violet creeping in alongside the rose. It is not lipstick-y. Some dry patchouli adds earthiness to the drydown, and it becomes softly musky in its later stages. It remains dry and potpourri-like as it fades. Sillage and longevity are moderate. It is a feminine transeasonal daytime scent. A pleasant rose scent that will work for many, this is too potpourri-like for my liking. Still, not bad for its bargain price. I wonder how the original English Rose compares. 3/5.

It was a blind buy. I saw reviews saying it smells like Eau Rose from Diptyque, which I knew and liked, so I bought it. The first time I sprayed it, I was a bit disappointed because it's not the photorealistic and sweet rose that as I expected. However, a few weeks later, I really like it. It is between a realistic rose (fresh, dewy) and a rose water type of rose (powdery, woody). The slightly bitter tea note adds more depth and freshness. I also like the patchouli in it, which makes it more unisex. A not-sweet-at-all rose. It somehow reminds me of the opening of Homme A La Rose but without the green apple note. It is a quite lineal scent, performance is weak on me, I need to spray 8 times to actually smell it. Lasts 1-2 hours, but for the price I can always reapply as much as I want. Actually I like it even better than Eau Rose now for how light and unisex it is. The dry down of Eau Rose is too strong and always gives me a headache. Reapply is much easier than scraping off.

My 7 year old son tonight started reading Fragrantica when I left my laptop open, he was really enjoying it and asked if he could write a review. I got a few of my perfumes out for hit to play with. Unable to choose which he wanted to write about, we did a little "smell test". I sprayed 4 perfumes onto tissue (CK One shock, JPG Classique, Ghost Deep Night and Yardley English Rose) and he narrowed them down to his favourite out of those. So here is his little review.... "Lovely sweet scent, nice and rosy. Perfect amount of strength. Great to wear on a special occasions like birthdays. It reminds me of a flower garden. It also smells like rose cream sweets. I like the tall thin bottle with its patterned lid. Really great perfume! Love it!"

Classically gorgeous, smells like the pinkest rosewater delivered on a warm blanket of white musks. Fresh and clean, sweet without being saccharin, a fragrance I use liberally especially now it's springtime. Moderate sillage, it isn't in your face it just radiates out with the heat of your body, a rare case of its' softness making me like it more as I usually veer towards more powerhouse fragrances. This is just familiar and comforting, spraying it gives me the same feeling as stepping into a nice warm bath. Will keep repurchasing.

It's lovely. Just fresh, nice roses. I have easily triggered migraines and I have had troubles with rose scents through the years. I love roses, but rose fragrances can be so heavy and overwhelming. But not this one. Yardley ́s English Rose is perfect for me. The scent is definitely more like new roses on a bush in a beautiful garden than dark, red hothouse roses in a crystal vase indoors, if you get my point. I like that, and I like the way it settles: musk and flowers nicely blended.

i do not get grandma vibes from rose perfumes, because my grandma always wore vanilla, so perhaps thats why, but i love this scent and it does not feel dated to me. its a very fresh dewy rose. i like this for early morning walks in spring, naps, before bed, and any other time id like some fresh spring air. that is exactly what this smells like to me. a rainy spring breeze passing through a rosebush.

I LOVE roses! I have been looking for a rose scent and when I was younger I was all about TeaRose from The Perfumer's Workshop! This one is similar but on the softer side which is nice. It is a true rose while not being heady or offensive. I think it would also work nice layering with other fragrances. I am extremely happy that I picked this one up! 2.2.19

I like this parfume. It reminds me of a scent Cora Crawley from Downton Abbey would wear. A lovely scent of an English rose garden, from the 1800-century. On me it has a fantastic strength, sillage & staying-power. I like the vintage bottle, the sweet juice is in, and for 10 $, this is a keeper

It is very fresh, clean and moderate silage and longevity. More of a tea rose than true rose scent to me but still very good eau de toilette that has a good price value. I layer it under more true rose perfumes.

A light, watery, fresh pink rose, sweet but not cloying, green but not bitter. Very similar to roses de chloe, but so much cheaper. It’s clean and pretty, can’t go wrong really.

Very standard rose and violet fragrance, elegant and affordable and lasts well specially on clothes. To me it’s exactly like Yves Rocher Rose Eau Fraiche

A subtle, pure rose. Delicate and ethereal. For the romantic, elegant woman. On fabric, it lingers as a very intimate veil for several hours.

Simple but effective. Light, airy, lovely fresh cut roses. Not an intrusive scent. Perfect for spring/summer daytime wear.

This scent is a lovely soft and fresh rose fragrance. Not overwhelming at all. Very nice. Rating 8/10.

I find similarity between it and Hugo Boss The Scent For Her, in hot weather.

Light, refregerated rose, frehsly cut stem, slightly metalic

Peppery, dry, slightly bitter rose that settles to a rose potpourri, as a reviewer has noted in the original perfume review. There are differences compared to the original. For instance no geranium, white flowers, woodsy notes, spices and the addition of citrus, tea, magnolia, cassis, violet and patchouli. For all its changes, it hasn’t strayed too far from the original imo. Pleasant fragrance, bottle and price.

I do love the rose scent but GOD is it strong. I sprayed it once and now I have a headache. I am quite sensitive to a lot of smells but this is very strong, which is a shame because I really do enjoy the scent.

It’s just okay for me. The rose is pretty, but there’s a sharp edge in the opening that never really settles on my skin. It stays a bit too bright and pointy, so I don’t get the soft, clean rose I hoped for.

This is comparable to Roses de Chloe! It's a lovely, fresh, simple rose scent with moderate sillage.

Ohh I do not like this at all. I own Roses de Chloe and this is faaar from it in terms of quality. Chloe is dewy and fresh pink rose, this is pure rose water. Paul Smith Rose is on my wish list and I really hope it does not smell like this. If you want to smell like the cheapest rose water that you can buy from any turkish supermarkt, go for this.

As no-one is mentioning this I thought I better might: This has a very sharp, nausea inducing undertone. If you're a rose lover, but are sensitive to that very particular synthetic modern rose note (that sharp one, which sticks in your nose), then this is not for you. I love a good dewy rose scent, but some rose perfumes, especially the modern ones, have that synthetic rose note, which I find nausea inducing. So I can smell the rose, but there's always that lingering uncomfortable sharpness to this perfume. I'm sad about it as I love a good rose perfume, especially when they're done in a photorealistic way. It doesn't have any softness or dewiness (like Jo Malone Red Roses for example). It just just a sharp, synthetic smelling rose water scent, on top of that weird dry pencil shaving base, which one finds in a lot of modern perfumes these days. If you're not into that very specific synthetic modern rose note (if you have been annoyed by it yourself, then you know exactly what I mean), then I would recommend to you to not purchase this.

I'm wondering how does Yardley dared to change a perfume scent completely, this definitely is a new different perfume in a similar bottle compared to previous edition....this one won't last longer than 15 minutes on my skin... the original english rose would last for 1-2 days, specially on my clothes and hair. I'm deeply disappointed, they could still sell both versions, the contemporary and the original, I know mostly of people doesn't likes vintage perfumes, saying it smells like granny but still....I m pretty sure those who loves the original english rose must also love vintage scents....it seems those who have a classic taste are fated to suffer in this decade....If I want a modern perfume I will take any other such as La vie of Lancome, Pink Sugar, Armani Code.... if I chose English Rose by Yardley, it was for it's unique scent...now I won't buy it anymore.

I have an odd relationship with rose perfumes. I LOVE roses, but I have struggled with finding a rose perfume that didn't turn into a rotting mess on me. A lot of people recommend Tea Rose, but that was the worst I found personally. I originally liked it, but it turned on me into a dusty bouquet of rotting roses. However, it lasts a long time and projects like a beast. I've also tried the original English Rose and at the time, just thought it was okay. It smelt like a more powdery version of True Rose by Woods of Windsor, another perfume I owned at the time. Both were powdery and watery but also smelt soapy. On the whole too, very few rose perfumes don't trigger my migraines, much like many in the comments here. The current English Rose is very different from the listed above. English Rose is very fresh, but very green and not watery at all. It smells probably 80% similar to British Rose by The Body Shop, but softer and less lemony. English Rose is very fresh, with moderate sillage and decent lasting power. The performance is nothing special. However, I think the fact it is quite moderate is why I find it so nice. This doesn't trigger any migraines or nasal headaches, whilst still smelling very green-fresh-rosy. I love this version of English Rose, much more than any other rose-only perfume I've tried. For the price and bottle size, respraying won't be an issue, and I do think reformulating with a contemporary approach was a smart choice. I guess this perfume very much supports why Yardley has existed successfully for so long.

I thought it reminded me of Roses de Chloe... Unfortunately it did but not to the extent of the quality, detail and photorealism of Roses de Chloe. I sprayed Roses de Chloe on one arm: it was lively and enlivening, like a soft pink rose unfurling before me with every detail coming out in three dimensional form, the heart, the soft petals, its brightness, leaves and botanical nature. I, then, sprayed English Rose on the other arm: it was a flat, one dimensional, pink hue fragrance with the same OVERALL smell of Roses de Chloe but WITHOUT all the details of the flower that make it three dimensional. There was no differentiation between a soft heart, a bundle of petals, thorns or stems; it was just a soft haze pink fragrance with the ESSENCE of pink roses - the same pink roses used in Roses de Chloe but without all the quality and details that bring Chloe's Roses to life. I hate to say it but it's a cheap interpretation that cannot meet the mark of the original Roses de Chloe. Why did Yardley RUIN their line of classics?! The original Yardley English Rose was SO BEAUTIFUL, even more beautiful than Roses de Chloe. The brand is just a shadow of its former greatness!

this has, oddly enough, become my go-to for at home, lazy days and simple quick outings. it's a light, slightly watery, clean rose. she's not powdery, or spicy, or any of the other typical rose-descriptors. i picture rose petals floating in crystal-clear water. maybe a tad green, with a very soft, pure white musk. i enjoy it after baths, layered with some jergen's rose body butter. it's just a soft, pretty, usually pre-bedtime or early morning skin-scent for me. i dont have to use up my pricier options, nor do i have to put much thought into choosing it. not a beast sillage wise, but it lasts fairly well on me and in my hair/on my clothes. i get a good 3-4 hours out of it before i dont smell it anymore. i find myself choosing it more and more lately! it's not a fragrance that morphs much, and it does lack a bit of depth or uniqueness, i suppose, but for such an inexpensive perfume, it is lovely. she's no mugler angel, she's no frederic malle or br540, but she's a cute little lady-like scent and i adore her sincerely.

Got up early this morning for my weekly rush in and out of the grocery store. The heavy, humid morning air called for something bright but gentle. I just obtained a small bottle of Yardley's English Rose, Contemporary Edition and I reached into my perfume armoire for that light pink juice. Three or four sprays and off I went in a soft cloud of pink roses that possessed just enough thorn of green to cut through the mist. I'm enjoying this one. It's simple, uncomplicated, and suggests a casual bon vivant. I haven't owned it since junior high school, oh so many moons ago when it was call Red Roses and was quite a bit stronger, but I'm glad to have it in my collection again just for a day like today - Home from the store, groceries put away, feet up, sipping my iced coffee with dark chocolate almond creamer, reading perfume reviews, and enjoying my own company. I think I need another spritz and a little more coffee on this nice Saturday morning!

I love the scent, but sorry to say, the EDT doesn't last on me, even for 30 minutes. Fresh roses with hints of citrus (I get mostly lemon) and slight musk. I spray twice on each wrist and twice on my neck and by the time, I reach my work place, the scent is gone. It is nice while it lasts, I just wished it would last longer. Lucky, I didn't pay much for this. Otherwise, this fragrance would have been a pity and receive no love from me. Edit: I managed to get the original version of Yardley Rose and the scent is totally different from this one. The original one is a bouquet of fresh garden rose. It smells more classy whereas the contemporary version is more citrusy rose. Both has their own perks, I can see people enjoying both fragrance, but I just wished Yardley didnt reformulated the original version as it was simply beautiful.

This is a gentle fresh rose scent, like the rose note inside Bright Crystal. It opens with a sharp citronella like pink rose, its quiet greeny and airy because of the tea note (its definately supported with rose tree) and that holds the note patchouli which lie on the deep. The citruses are realy juicy and sweet it might be a grapefruit, mandarin combo. For the drydown it is still a rose but more rounded with the musk and colored with manoglia and violet. Patchouli is a note that cover rosy fragrance from top to bottom so i can say it is there but not so clear compared to rose ofcourse.

I bought this looking for a replacement for vintage C+E Evelyn. This is *close*, but it immediately hit me as being a slightly rosier dupe for the vintage RL Romance I wore as a signature after the C+E changed Evelyn. This fades on me rather quickly, turning into a skin scent much like Romance does. What is left is a spicy Woody musky yum just for a lovers nose. I have this on my right wrist and Perfumers Workshop tea rose on my left, and between the two, I may swoon from the sheer loveliness of it all.

For the price of $20aud, I prefer this to Jo Malone Red Roses, somehow. This is such a nice, sweet fresh rose which lingers softly. JM Red Rose has a slight sour dry down on my skin which kinda puts me off a bit. This last as long as JM which is 4 hours max.

This is a blasphemy. It has *nothing* to do with the vintage juice. It's a very synthetic, fleeting, headache inducing, sharp, artificial, liquid floor cleaner rose. Oh Yardley, what have you done? *Not recommended at all for migraine sufferers.

The classic version is very oriental and heavy. I think it's unsufferable and this one is a bit better. It looks like yves rocher peony's dupe.
