Rouge Velours

Just about the prettiest thing I've smelled all year. I got back into fragrance in a big way in 2021, after getting a mild case of Covid and temporarily losing my sense of smell. Not being able to smell any of my beloved bottles was truly one of the most heartbreaking experiences for me, since I love fragrance dearly. Thus I set off on a new quest to "smell all the smells" after I recovered. The Vestiaires de Parfums line contains my all-time favorite fragrance ever: Tuxedo. I have been sampling all of them as I can, to see if there are any worthy contenders to the crown (so far nothing has come close to matching Tuxedo's brilliance, but perhaps someday...) All things considered, Rouge Velours is probably my favorite out of the Vestiaires line so far. It is a slightly linear, woody, patchouli based rose paired with pink pepper and white tea. The fragrance pyramid is much simpler and pared down from many of YSL's brilliant 1980's creations, but this lends the fragrance an air of modernity. It definitely smells "new" to me. This fragrance is a chypre-leaning floral that is a more laid-back and quietly sophisticated rose with an ample base. Staying power is decent, projection is only so-so. I did have to reapply once during the day, but it luckily performs reasonably well on clothing. More fresh than sultry, and more high tea than nightclub, this is a lovely grown-up scent that would be a safe blind purchase for those who love both a good Turkish rose and patchouli.

I just blind bought a dupe of this and it arrived today. According to reviews it is exactly the same as this one. I’m not a huge rose scent by itself lover but I’m always looking for rose done differently and i have quite a few that are all very different. I wanted something vampy and dark for the fall winter season This delivers!! It’s a deep dark red rose with the rich earthy sweetness of patchouli that reminds me of coco mademoiselle or coco noir. But it has this white tea note that reminds me of the spa like aroma of tea fragrances that blends so nicely with the deeper dark rose and earthy sweetness patchouli bringing a tad of softness to all that weight, plus the pink pepper that brightens it up just a tad more and then that lovely woody vetiver in the end. I don’t pick up a lot on the Jasmine but maybe it’s just that well blended bc this isn’t just straight up rose. Yes you smell a lot of the rose but it’s rose done differently due to all those other notes that come together with it so nicely! This is not a juvenile bubble gum pink candy marshmallow fragrance. This is adult, this is sophistication, this reminds me of perfume from the 90s. And I’m all here for it! I love it!! I would love to be able to own this original one someday day but the ysl prices are hefty! I love a lot of this line from ysl!

Rouge Velours is a scent of two halves - it has a beautiful rosy opening, but dries down to an unexpected woody jasmine scent. Masterfully composed with high-quality ingredients, it is a twist on a classic. RV opens with rosy pink pepper, paving the way to a powdery pink rose note, as smooth as the velours of the title. There is a clean white musk note in the background, adding a little animalic softness, while earthy patchouli complements the rose, forming that classic accord. I don't get much iris, but it most likely enhances the powdery texture. It becomes woody as it dries down thanks to the dry vetiver note. The patchouli remains, but the rose fades, giving way to sweet, slightly waxy jasmine. The jasmine dominates for a while, but curiously, rose re-emerges when the jasmine subsides. It remains musky, fading to a musky skin scent with remnants of florals and patchouli remaining. Sillage is moderate and longevity is long-lasting. Feminine-leaning and transeasonal, this is a really good example of a rose-patchouli scent, but with a jasmine detour. RV seems predictable at face value, but kept me guessing. Impressive. 4.5/5.

@l'enfant divin The nose is Carlos Benaim, who I'm not usually a fan of. In this second review, I want to emphasize the complexity of this scent. It is indeed rose-patchouli heavy, but there is much more to this scent than that. First, the main axis: rose and patchouli. Perfectly combined. I am usually not a big fan of patchouli unless there is a syrupy counterpart to it, and here, the rose is exactly that. I assume in the summer this axis overpowers anything else as the patchouli grows in size. Now I must highlight two important facets complementing the rose-patchouli. The white tea is definitely recognizable. I have never smelled a tea fragrance that I could wear, but this is it. It brings a bitterness that plays down the syrupiness of the rose. Had it been more present I would have had to pass, but this is just fine. Additionally, I have to mention that this fragrance has a classical vibe to it, without being vintage (which I can't do), probably due to the iris and jasmine. The result: an elegant, classical yet modern rose-patchouli. Very femme. A good addition to any fragrance collection.

♥️ Oh • My • Gosh ♥️ Have I been living under a rock??? Where has this been all of my life??? This is L O V E at first sniff and as this fragrance evolves on my skin, I cannot sniff it enough 😵💫😵💫😵💫 I am just head over heels for Rouge Velours. This is a Red Rose in all its splendor. She evokes a young vampire whose skin is like porcelain, her hair is so dark it has a blue tint to it and she is dressed in red velvet from head to toe (Rouge Velours translates as Red Velvet in English). The Rose is ever present but the Jasmine makes its appearance after a while with the patchouli and it just smells m a g i c a l ✨✨✨✨ I think that the tea and Vetiver accords add a great deal of freshness and a certain dimension of “youth” to this scent, keeping it from going into grandma territory. I love the patchouli in here. It’s not earthy and dirty, it’s deep and dark but oh so balanced with the Rose and it’s probably why it feels “gothic” to me... All in all, I NEED Rouge Velours in my life, right now ♥️ it is THAT good ♥️

This fragrance reminds me of someone who is charismatic, strong and powerful with some sexiness thrown into it. Perhaps more suited for night wear rather than day wear at work for me. I really wanted to love this but alas the patchouli is really not for me as I’m really sensitive towards patchouli notes. First whiff and I can already smell it, patchouli makes me light-headed. Subsequently as the middle notes appear, I began to enjoy a blend of rose, jasmine and iris but the patchouli is beginning to make me a little nauseated. This works beautiful when layered with Blouse which is another rose scent but greener. Great and understated fragrance on its own, nontheless. I just wished the patchouli doesn’t make me sick, this is entirely on me and no faults of the fragrance at all.

Elegant, refined and restrained yet a great performer. Best in cooler seasons as it can get thin and hairspray-like in warmer temps. A clear dark red rosewater that has an almost red wine touch to it. Slightly dry finish. Clean patchouli that isn’t too dark or resinous at all. There’s a freshness and light green touches that keep it modern and out of masculine territory and a light sweetness and lack of vanilla that stop it being too feminine. Squarely unisex and one I yearn to wear in the cold when you don’t want a heavy woody/Amber/Oud or gourmand scent. A summer fragrance designed for the cold. ❤️

YSL you did it again! This is hands-down, THE BEST, rose-patchouli frag I've ever tried. Rouge Velours is mature, classy, subtle, alluring, luxurious... just everything I want to be in my 30s. It perfectly balances out all the notes and hits all the right spots. I'm quite sensitive to patchouli, but the patchouli here is not dirty/stinky at all. I actually thought it's moss or musk at first. It's rather subdued and just there to ground the fragrance (and add class). Rose is the main player. It's a velvety red rose that slowly dries up over time, but the thorns remain sharp.

This is the ultimate date smell. A beautiful deep but realistic rose, with the earthy sexiness of patchouli really leading this fragrance. With this on, you feel like THAT girl. When sprayed on skin, this keeps the rose and patchouli really strongly, and turns quite woody and floral after a while on my skin. It lasts for a while, but nowhere near as long and as powerfully as when it's sprayed on clothes. Absolutely beautiful smell. I'm waiting for a special event to fork out the full price tag of this perfume, but I'm very excited to buy a full bottle.

I tend to not even touch anything with rose. I don’t like it 99% of the time. But for some reason, I picked this up, sprayed my arm, walked away, came back to ask for a sample. Went home, ordered a 10ml decant, and just ordered a full bottle today. This is a beautiful jammy rose. It’s not dusty, it’s not earthy, it’s not powdery, it’s juicy, fresh, and musky. I love it so much. It lasts all day. Scents never stick to my skin but one spritz of this in my elbow and I woke up smelling it the next day. I don’t feel that it compares to NR for her.

This is beautiful!!! It's rich and light at the same time. It's grown woman but flirty girl! If you like NR Fleur Musc and Coco Noir then you'll probably enjoy this as well. But what makes this stand out to me is the subtle powdery elegance that the iris lends to the composition. I blind bought this and I'm so so pleased! It exceeded my expectations. This collection is really wonderful!

Wow! I get similarities to Clive Christian Rock Rose , however, this feels more floral and subtle. I smelled this masterpiece at Neiman Marcus and had to buy it! The Rose note is hugged by this earthy dirty patchouli note and it just smells phenomenal! Scent: 9/10 Projection: 8/10 Longevity: 8/10 (10hrs) Unique: yes! Overall: 8.5/10 Worth a try

Oh stunning .. I'm in love..the Rose,Jasmine and Iris dancing together in the fields of clean earthy Patchouli and Vetiver with subtle Musk cloud all over them.It has sexyness of an aristocrat lady but not too dark to be called vampy. I love it..underrated masterpiece from YSL house.

I’m not an expert, to me it’s smell elegance, beautifully blend smooth of Rose and tea never thought how it would smell together but it does works so well! Perfect to its name smooth like velvet and sensual like it’s colour. On me it’s last all day! A massive success of blind buy.

When I saw Fragrance World released something falling into the 'reminds me of' category, I just knew I had to have it! And boy! let me tell you, they weren't wrong. If this doesn't smell like heaven to bits then the whole world must done got nasal stress.

This unfortunately only lasted an hour or so on my skin. And it’s renamed as Velour Flamboyant Rose for rerelease in 2025. The formulation is about the same, including the short longevity on my skin. The patchouli was upped a bit but that’s about it.

Absolutly beautiful, big, bold dark red rose. Rose and nothing but The ROSE! Very natural and comfort scent. Like a face immersed in a huge bouquet of burgundy roses. Pure happy and calm😇😊🥰

Great, but it should be called Rouge Satin, as it lacks an ambery or oakmossy depth and obscurity to be called Rouge Velours.

Wonderfully simple. A very innocent fragrance.

A deep, luxurious rose. The rose is red, dewy and darkened by a cool, clean patchouli. The tea note gives this (otherwise dark rose) scent a thirst-quenching freshness and a lot of versatility. I was in fresh red-rose heaven for the first 2 hours, but then the scent starts to dry down more unisex, the sweet rose slowly starts to fade and a slight soapiness develops, I also smell the vetiver trying to push its way through...errr...I’m not so happy about that. I will have to test out my sample a few more times, because my gosh, the first 2 hours was perfection and made me want to immediately order a bottle! I still think it’s a fantastic scent if you don’t mind the unisex drydown, I just wish the first 1-2 hours had lasted much longer. Signature scent material for sophisticated ladies 30+. It can go from day to night and is wearable all year round.

Love this one!! The scent, the color, the bottle! Agree that the patchouli is not dirty in this frgrance. The rose is still the main character in this frag. The rose-patchouli combo is not unique, but this is one of the best rose-patch that I've tried. If you sometimes think the drydown of POAL is a little bit stinky becoz of the patchouli, you may try this one. This one is so wearable, classy, luxurious & sensual. The color of the juice gives you the image of the scent. That Gorgeous Wine Red. Sillage is moderate - High. Longevity is nice too.

Ooof this one has that Dior Midnight Poison vibe going with the rose and patch. Deep and camphorous with a gentle fresh touch of tea. It's slightly lighter than MP in terms of patch, and a little more fruity (from the jasmine) but the original spirit is there! I couldn't wear MP back in the days but this might do. Good one YSL 👍

This fragrance has a stunning scent, a genuine rose garden aroma mixed with a touch of patchouli. Smells very luxurious!! It's incredibly soft and undeniably attractive. I really wanted to love it on me, but I guess roses just aren't my thing. Although I enjoy the fragrance sometimes, I don't think it's right for me.

I’m so disappointed in this, all I get is rose and a tiny bit of iris. No musk no patchouli, nothing. Lasts all of 2 hours on my skin and then I have to bring my wrist to my nose to be able to smell it.my search for the perfect rose continues.

I’m not a fan of patchouli, but in this one a bit more of it might actually help. The rose is overwhelmingly dominant, with jasmine liqueur and a touch of pink pepper in the opening. Overall, it’s a very nice scent

This on my skin smells exactly like Lazy Sunday Morning, tho I can smell more fresh floral on testing strips. Pretty solid fragrance if you like floral musky fragrance and definitely leans feminine.

Writing some quick notes here for myself: Slightly boozy/effervescent pink pepper, rose patchouli. Reminds me of a fresher POAL. Nice sillage

Rouge Velours is an interesting fragrance that incorporates Rose(a slightly synthetic one) into a cool refreshing green tea fragrance. Not sure how it compares to velours since its a very refreshing and moist type of scent compared to a dense velvety material that velour is. Longevity and sillage are very strong so a bottle will last a long time. A more femenine leaning fragrance but can easily be enjoyed by men. Not quite my cup of tea since i expected a dense and powerful fragrance like Lost Cherry with Rose as a star intead of Cherry, but not a bad one overall.

Rouge Velours comes across as an elegant, sophisticated, high quality fragrance. The opening notes smelled like a woody rose, but then I realized the woody quality was actually pepper. The woodiness continued through to the drydown. I'm afraid it's not floral enough a scent for me, even though it's not an unpleasant smell, but I just can't take the pepper and that much wood. I think it would work okay on a man as well.

Patchouli is overpowering for my taste. It is a beautiful mix however I just seem to be sensitive to it. It is a very mature rose fragrance but I would not recommend this as a safe blind buy nor is it an everyday perfume. However, it is an extremely elegant and seductive fragrance that I see myself wearing for special occasions, I’d almost say this would wear great for a wedding.

Yuck! I can’t understand this. On my skin it smells like poop and moth balls.. I’m sorry.. that’s what I get.. oh and with a bit of rose sprinkled on top. Horrible. Scrubber and that is rare for me!

Rouge Velours Yves Saint Laurent At the first visit, Rogue Velours for me is quite forgettable scent. I decided to do scent comparison with other 4 Rose-Patch fragrances in my collection (POTL, Eau Capitale and White Patchouli), it revealed something interesting. Rogue Velours, as of now - I would say this is the most true “Rose” patchouli fragrance being the Rose is centric and Patchouli is supporting note. This rendition is not earthy, wet or anything you may associate with classic combo. This is intensively rely on musky / powdery base. I got bouquet of both Jasmine and Rose. It is not really my type as I find this slightly too beautiful. However; let’s see I might actualized certain thought on this.. 7/10 ===== Update 1 on Mar 26, 2024 I haven’t really wear Rogue Velour for really long time. My overall taste are shift to White floral kind of thing at this point. But I still have fun sniff Rose-Patchouli fragrance. I think I will revisit them soon. Somehow, I rearrange one corner in my shelf, I notice La Fille de Berlin.. sitting sadly in the Corner, it is only my Serge Lutens at this point. I spray on myself just for fun before the night.. “Don’t it kinda smell familiar..” I think to myself. My eyes glaze at Rogue Verlour. Then it make scent. Rogue Verlour is def. A modern twist on La Fille de Berlin.. the key being additional syrupy sweetness. But all in all, it is a classic rose fragrance that borrow certain patch/woody element to make the rose complete. Structure wise it is similar (rose/patchouli in base variance in kind of earthiness between Oakmoss or Vetiver).. but it is there. I personally believe both Rogue Velour and La Fille de Berlin are rich in Geranium (Geraniol) it doesn’t scream “Rose”, a sharp / dense / Red note which is characteristic of Geranium are prominent in both fragrance. Rogue Velour add the mild iris/violet powdery like. It is smell softer, than La Fille de Berlin. Easier to reach. It is more femme than La Fille de Berlin. Rogue Velour is also more multi dimensional than La Fille de Berlin. It develop, instead of fade like La Fille de Berlin but the core is kinda there. Still, don’t know how to feel about this one. ===== Update 2 on March 12, 2025 In this pass year, I reach Rogue Velour 1-2 times. I love underlying quality of this fragrance.. even this is strong red rose. It manages to feel innocent and powdery while it is not an old lady type of smell. It trues Rose fragrance, it is not a chypre in fragrance in my interpretation. It is Floral-Musky with support of Cashmeran and Lite touch of sour earthiness. Well, I think it is time to reput it in my collection.

The most delicious jammy rose patchouli. It has a warm, rounded, honied quality, with the most yummy patchouli and vetiver lending a dark and sexy quality. All of the other notes in this composition are there purely to add depth to the main characters, and do not shine as such on their own. The jasmine and tea notes bring relief to the composition, preventing it from becoming too heavy or jammy.... this is not a heady and intoxicating perfume, it retains a character of lightness, cleanliness, and elegance whilst being undeniably sensual and romantic. You could definitely wear this as a day-to-night scent, though perhaps not at work! I won't lie, it makes me want to sell my bottle of Le Fille de Berlin because this kind of jammy geranium-rose suits me a lot more.

So this is very strong on pink pepper and patchouli and then rose, some leathery Jasmine tea. Its almost slightly indolic. I have blind bought it as well and slightly regretting it, but mainly because im not a big fan of chypre leaning fragrances. This is classy and definitely chypre leaning fragrance. Few fragrances it reminds me of are Lust in Paradise by Ex Nihilo and Pivoines Suzhou by Giorgio Armani with patchouli and pink pepper aimed up. Its quite strong and I can imagine it having amazing performance, but also headache inducing. Overall if you enjoy direction i described, you will love the fragrance, its vey well made, just not my cup of tea.

Rose patchouli bomb. It reminds me of La Fille De Berlin from Serge Lutens mixed with Guerlain Idylle. It is a wonderful scent, only for rose lovers. It has a dramatic start with red rose notes galore, the iris, pink pepper, patchouli and vetiver are grounding notes in the background. The musk is very clean and persistent for many hours. I think this is elegant but also very sensual. This is probably somewhat mature I don't imagine a very young person rocking this scent. I tried to wash my hand to sample something else and it didn't wash. Excellent performance. Full bottle worthy.

Ysl year by year amaizing us with new creation this perfume is so lovely rose patchuly scent which is unfrequent and unusual, it's very bulgarian or turkish rose but it's dark at the same time not fresh style perfume ,this is for evening date or glamour party only because the way of the smell is very classic and not for everyone it's for people who loves this type of fragrances. longavity:9/10 projection: 8/10 uniqueness:10/10 overall :9.5/10

Beautiful. I understand the comparison with Narciso Rodriguez For Her EDP. And the colour pink of the NR For Her EDP bottle too. But Rouge Velours de Yves Saint Laurent is more refined and more harsh. It has a wonderful almost greenish patchouli probably due to the presence of vetiver. I also appreciate the slightly masculine dry down. My choice for the bottle of Rouge Velours de Yves Saint Laurent would be the colour green though ;-)

Dark, earthy, slightly damp red rose. Very gothic and vampy and melancholic. Little bit feminine leaning but not incredibly so. For sure the strongest of the Vestiaires line other than maybe Cuir - this stuff will BLAST off of you for quite a while. No clue what the last reviewer was smelling. I feel like I'm bothering the people in my office with this stuff.

Pretty much a Rose-Patchouli scent. It the same style as Xerjoff More than words and Electomuss Rhodanthe. More patchouli forward than those 2 others in the drydown.. Its well done with good performance. Its a 5/10 for me ( I dislike patchouli)

This is nice! I get roses that are finishing among slightly boozy earth /plant decay and a delicious glass of iced tea. Great rose fragrance for end of summer- projection and longevity are decent (8+hours).

Love at first sniff...and more sniffs after that. I feel like i found my signature scent with this perfume. It’s blends with my skin very well. Smells so elegant and like wealth. I just love it so much

ROSES & PATCHOULI!!! 🌹 OMG...It smells like super real roses that are growing in fresh cool soil- This is for serious rose lovers! You can smell each petal so fresh in the garden 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

it might be just me, but i get a sharp synthetic turpentine note blocking out any other scent and this for over 5 minutes, bottle looks like a new batch from a reputable seller.

Patchouli and rose. There is something marine in it. Strange but reminds me of Kenzo pour homme for some reason
