Calycanthus

Not all the notes listed here are correct. There is no grass note. There is plant sap which doesn't smell the same as grass. It gives this fragrance an aquatic touch as if you just snapped the stem of a plant and are smelling the juice inside. And there is no jasmine. On the back of the box, it says Jasmina Stephanotis, which is Madagascan Jamine. It is not technically Jasmine. Jasmine Stephanotis has a fresher, almost humid aspect, like flowers after it has rained, or the scent of flowers in the air in a humid tropical climate. The reason I bring this up is because on first spray this reminded me of Grandiflora's Madagascan Jasmine which I know does not have a true jasmine in it. This fragrance, like Grandiflora's, has that same dewy, fresh, flowers grown under glass aspect as if I just stepped inside a greenhouse full of flowers. I don't care for this when first sprayed. The first time I tried this it smelled like a musty, very light lily of the valley scent. Ugh, I almost washed it off. But this fragrance needs time to mesh with your skin to unfold. While I can clearly smell the stephanotis and other florals, there is something different here, something I know is a floral, yet I know I've never smelled this floral before. Though I have no reference point to compare it against other florals, it must be the Calycanthus. That is the only thing that could account for this indescribably pretty floral. The earthy raw honey and peach add just a touch of sweetness to this composition, though nothing fruity or animalic, and the musk a softness, but no powder to distract from the freshness. While the scent overall wears close to the skin, it creates a personal scent bubble that literally lasted until I washed it off. Just perfect to keep me captivated all day while not invading other's spaces; though I did notice a few times people at my job leaning in to catch a whiff. There is one thing I absolutely hate about this fragrance though, and that is the clunky bottle and sprayer. It's more fitting for a barbershop than a perfume wardrobe. A perfume as beautiful as this deserves to be held in a vessel to match, or at the very least, a bottle that isn't so clumsy. Too bad this one does not fit the beautiful scent inside. Final thought - If you love Grandiflora's Madagascan Jasmine, but are put off by the price, this will fit the bill nicely. While it is not a dupe by any means, it is in the same vein, and it is half the price of GMJ on the grey market. I got my bottle from Joma Shop which has a very good deal on it now.

An absolute beauty. Calycanthus is a flower that is very dear to me, it's the sign that winter means no sleep for nature, no gloomy days only, little sunshine, darkness and sadness. All the contrary. There's beauty which lies in the eye of the beholder. Calycanthus is a shy flower, very little, with a wax like texture, of an uncertain yellow upon branches almost bare. In the heart of winter the beautiful, embracing smell of this tree wraps the air all around. Intoxicating, but less strong than jasmine. Sweet and shy, less powering than jasmine. This scent by Acca Kappa pairs the two giants, calycanthus and jasmine in a lovely dance where you see (smell) them arm in arm with one another. It's a beautiful mix: the calycanthus gains self confidence and the jasmine becomes less bombastic. It's a stupendous creation, elegant, magnificent, of a great quality. If you love calycanthus here it is for you, one of the very few scents featuring this fantastic smell. If you love jasmine, well, beautiful scent in lovely company. BEAUTIFUL.

This is a gorgeous lush luminous floral. It's the middle of summer at night and the air is heavy, hot when a breeze carries the creamy edible scent of the jasmine outside your window to you. The scent is lush but it's also somehow luminous and airy. It never becomes cloying or too heavy and the slight powder slight sharpness that is present from the beginning never evolves to become sharper or more powder or more musk. So many white florals are screechy, synthetic, soapy little sharp biting jawed monsters guaranteed to cause headaches and clog your throat but not this one. This one is well balanced and just lovely. I don't know what Calycanthus smells like. I wish I did! Perhaps it is what adds balance to the jasmine. A la Nuit is another lovely realistic jasmine but it can be too much. This is A la Nuit but softer, airier. If you have a love for jasmine, definitely try this one.

There is a flower called marabillis..mirabillis? I can't remember the exact name. This captures what that flower smells like. they grew wild behind my grandmothers home, as a child my sisters and i would try to thread the flowers to make crowns :). Its pretty expensive (70+ for an Edt) I tried Jessica mcclintok and it's very similar floral wise, but with greener note and with a little less “ honey” ( and by honey I don’t mean a sticky mess, think natural sweet) All in all very similar and WAY more affordable( if you know where to look) . Its more of a skin scent but depending on the weather it will project nicely, you can also layer with the lotion to get more of a kick.

The fragrance has a grassy opening which gives it a unisex appeal, and then calms down into something much sweeter. The strongest notes that linger on are jasmine and a sweet, almost gourmad note. I have no idea what it is, maybe the calycanthus? I’ve never smelt it before so I can’t be too sure. I definitely feel a unique honey towards the end of the fragrance which I love, since a lot of fragrances tends towards a musky or powdery end. I think that while this fragrance leans more towards feminine, the fragrance is still unisex. As a guy, this one of the fragrances I always get compliments on (from women though, not really men).

So calming. It was love at first sniff. Had a travel size (10ml) and ordered a full bottle the first day I got it. This is intoxicating! A warm spring day with honeysuckle and jasmine in the air. It’s really natural smelling. Nothing synthetic or sharp or overpowering. Can’t imagine this would offend anybody. Just smells very comforting very calming very nice. Interestingly, I may not have ordered this had I looked at the notes first! I don’t really smell grass. I did also blind buy Acca Kappa Virginia Rose off the back of living Calycanthus so much. It’s nice but not a stand-out like this is.

The most ethereal, beautiful white flower melange. I can just about smell peaches, just get the idea of honey in the warmth, but the combination is a very hard to describe but stunning fragrance. See Suzys' review below for all the details. Update...I now own a bottle and have been wearing it non stop. It is longer lasting than I found from the sample, & a 'thicker" white smell, Jasmine/Apricots/ & again the elusive (& illusive) warm & sweet that must be THE Calycanthus. Delightful for the warmer weather.

At last a blind buy I'm in love with! Perfect summer scent, evoking memories of seaside bliss from my teenage years: first love, moonlit sea and smell of night flowers, acacias, and orange blosoms and still hot air full of mysterious southern smells. Easy to wear for it's not sweet or heavy, but perfectly light and transparent, almost ethereal. I'm so very happy to have a big bottle of Calycanthus, now I can't wait for the spring to come!

Calycanthus reminds me of a fresh spring day, sitting in a garden having a picnic while smelling the flowers. I have a 15ml bottle and I smell it every time I want to remember spring. The grass and flower notes make it so perfect. Beautiful light, fresh fragrance.

I don't get the comparison to Floriaku's Cricket Song here. That perfume smells like bad laundry soap. Calyanthus on the other hand smells like a bouquet of hot house flowers w/ greenery. There is an element of tea served w/ honey in the dry down that I find rather charming. The pollen and greenery of the flowers is not like nature but of the hothouse, controlled and managed by man. There are flowers of all colors in this bouquet but most of them are pink and white. Like a perfect Bridal bouquet. I smell peony, jasmine and orange blossom mainly but others as well that are difficult to identify. Every element is balanced here, the florals, the pollen, the honeyed notes that are natural in most flowers, the slight peach skin like musk of the petals. This a borderline love for me. It is so well blended and balanced floral perfume that is very feminine but easy to wear and easy to be around. The main word that comes to mind when smelling it is pretty. Would be a lovely perfume for a spring bride.

I’m not going to pretend that I know how calycanthus smells like, but for me, the Acca Kappa’s perfume with the name of Calycanthus smells like a honeyed combo of jasmine, orange blossoms, neroli with some green, fresher accents! It’s a floral through and through, with some citrusy, fruity accents mostly in the opening and then it settles on the skin into a pleasant white floral. Sadly, it’s not a long lasting floral, within an hour it’s a skin scent, but lingers on for four hours, as a skin scent mainly. Fantastic summer fragrance mainly, that’s not cloying on the skin but light, airy and very feminine. If you can get buy Calycanthus during a sale, it might worth purchasing a bottle, but not full price. It’s one of those perfumes where I love the scent but I hate the performance.

This is the most feminine and delicate fragrance I've smelled yet-absolutely beautiful, floral without being sharp, heavy or dusty.Sweet, like eating carambola rather than a mango. update: My (ex)bf says its smell reminds him of disinfectant I have never disagreed more about a scent with him that about this one. I can see that there is a strength about it, and a very floral fragrance is not for everyone or every day, but I still have to have this one. I really want to try Glicine...I no longer like this one because it is too sharp.....

I found a bargain bottle, I'm going to have it again soon-yes!!! It's an unusual fragrance-and it has the touch of sharpness and soapiness that most florals will have-but it's unforgettable and it wears so beautifully during the spring and summer! So I've learned my lesson: If your boyfriend doesn't like your favorite perfume, drop the guy, not the fragrance. (Well-this isn't my absolute favorite, but it is a beauty-Let's hope my nouveau beau (who has better tastes) will enjoy it as much as I do....)

I’ve bought a small bootle in Serbia, when in the short trip found myself without any perfume. I fell in love with simple idea of white flowers and the freshness of bergamot. Through I thought it’s only summer perfume, one winter day, I opened the bottle to sneeze it as I needed something flowery and light for my dance lesson, and here it is ... it is an amazing winter perfume. Bergamot loses its bitterness and plays with jasmine. And overall smell pleasant and refreshing like Italian barber shop.

Utterly feminine ladylike fresh floral fragrance. Every girl who feels like a lady and loves interesting florals should try Calycanthus.

This is my current everyday fragrance. It's clean and slightly sweet and yet bitter, like fresh cut grass. I think the notes that really shine here are grass, jasmine and then orange blossom honey.

I wish I was getting the notes that other folks have. It just smells like a very dry and soapy white floral. I pick up some jasmine, with little sweetness. The soapiness just overwhelmed the other notes for me. And I did not get the honey. Kind of generic as well, it is unlikely I would be able to identify it on someone. I can say that it is both delicate and clean smelling, which may suit some who do not want to offend with the strength of their scent.

Calycanthus is a beautiful and refreshing interpretation of an old English garden. My childhood home is built on 4 hectares, 2 hectares being an English garden complete with white gravel paths, archways and a vineyard. Calycanthus takes me back there. It opens quite strongly with sweet, dewy jasmine and orange blossom. There's also a rather green feel to this fragrance, making it smell like a natural bouquet of flowers rather than a perfume. As it develops a sweet powderiness begins to show. It doesn't overpower the composition, but it does however give Calycanthus a clean-like quality. This fragrance is all about sparkling florals and sweet honey. It's not particularly unique, but it is distinctive. A wonderful Spring fragrance in my opinion. This fragrance is pretty, feminine, fresh and lasting. It may be niche, but Calycanthus is not a fragrance so daring that it can't be worn by perfume novices. I do believe that a majority of people will enjoy this fragrance, one reason being that it's a nicely composed jasmine scent, one that doesn't overpower or turn rancid on the skin.

I am not familiar with calycanthus, but this is A blue jasmine perfume if there ever existed one! I feel like I’m waking up at dawn in my fathers home in Pakistan, the sky is still blue and the stars are still out, you can see the moon but also the suns arrival on the horizon. As I sit in the second story balcony facing the garden, I can smell the jasmine wafting through the air with dew drops on the stem. A quiet time for prayer and reflection. What an inspiring fragrance... It is definitely ethereal, “light”, not an intrusive scent. A powdery true green jasmine. The sillage is decent, two feet in the beginning, but it is a personal scent; very quiet and close to the skin. You can smell the quality ingredients used in this. The lasting power is quite poor, 4 hours maximum as it has an “oil” quality more then a “perfume”. I would define this as a perfectly white jasmine under a twilight sky that it appears BLUE. I am really enjoying this , and imagine it would be perfect for a quiet summer evening.

Jasmine! That was the first word out of my mouth upon applying Acca Kappa Calycanthus, knowing nothing about this perfume, a small sample of which was kindly conveyed to me by pitbullfriend. She knows that I am an amateur of white flowers, and Calycanthus does not disappoint on that front! Rich, sumptuous, billowy, white jasmine is the story here really. I'd call it a soliflore, in fact. Lots of other notes are listed, but the jasmine is by far the star of this show. The natural scent of this flower is very appealing to me, and I've found it elsewhere is compositions such as Molinard Jasmin and Montale Jasmin Full. If ever I see a bottle of Acca Kappa Calycanthus (have I ever seen Acca Kappa perfumes anywhere???), I probably won't be able to resist it, either. In the meantime, for those who cannot find this perfume but pine for it, the same type of jasmine can be had for a very reasonable price from Molinard... This is not Alien jasmine or hedione. This is jasmine jasmine.

Having sought this out for some time I snapped it up on sale at M&S. At first spray this fulfilled my desires for a calycunthus soliflore (possibly the only one of its kind). The calycanthus in question is Calycanthus praecox (as pictured on the bottle) better known as Chimonanthus or winter sweet. So, it does smell rather a lot like wintersweet: a slightly sweet, green and refreshing white floral. It's a perfect spring morning fragrance as it's refreshing, uplifting. Once the brightness dissipates it becomes a different creature. At the dry down it immediately brought back fond memories of Comme des Garcons Dry Clean which is cold as stars and just as clean. This perfume manages to smell both of nature and of the future at once.

The Calycanthus is a flower found in Venice which blooms in the heart of winter. Tradition states that receiving this bloom is to be given love and care. This pretty little wildflower intoxicates the air in Venetian gardens through winter, It reminds you that spring is very close. It's heady fragrance warms your cold skin just like the honey in this version. This bouquet of orange, honey,musk and jasmine does this little flower justice. Acca Kappa have captured the alluring 'pretty' scent in their Calycanthus. The blend is sweet yet exotic and blalanced to create a true sweet floral. The more you inhale this the more it makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside.Totally intoxicating.....

What an utterly natural smelling floral! Smells indeed like a scent of bottled REAL spring florals. Nothing complex, almost a soliflore, but more interesting. Clear and lovely and sunny. I cannot imagine anyone offended or bored by this floral expanse. Ageless, though because of the freshness of spring, it reminds me of a young lady wearing an airy floral dress. Though not long lived, Calycanthus is by no means a fleeting body spray. Orange blossom is the predominant note - not the only note. This is the sort of floral that should be more common and instead is an uncommon treat. ENJOY!

Calycanthus is a type of plum blossoms which can be found in Italy only. I like the smell of this perfume for more than 6 years. The shops of Acca Kappa were closed in Hong Kong a couple years ago and this brand is resuming to locate Hong Kong again. Not doubt, the smell of this perfume is so fresh and young and reminds me the lovely left-over smell from laundry. And this is one of the rare white flower base perfumes which I can wear comfortable and smell nice.

This was a blind buy for me and I really like it! The top notes (to me) contain a hint of lemon verbena and some geranium, kind of herbal and refreshing. On dry down the honey comes right through, but I don't detect any strong white flower notes anywhere. All in all I would class this as a summer scent for a hot day, it's sharp and not at all powdery - perfect!

An edible jasmine? maybe! It is beautiful and flowery, the essence of jasmine - or, actually, it smells like mock orange to me.It is probably one of the best and well balanced jasmine perfumes, in my opinion. Another amazing quality - it actually becomes stronger during the day, developing the sweet honey underlayer that lingers and lingers.

This is surprisingly attractive scent. It's not complex but very fragrant with strong white floral notes. Calicanthus is not actually listed but the flower has a scent that reminds a lot of thick jasmine. It's kind of an ancient flower in perfumery. This fragrance is very good as a feel good feminine floral smell. Lasting power is average.

Jasmine and I do not get along unfortunately in most cases, and this is no different. The slightly indolic nature of this (and other jasmine scents) does not make my brain feel good when I sniff. Although this is a relatively light fresh jasmine with some sweetness from the honey, it still doesn't agree with me.

Pleasant and fresh. Unfortunately too light for me - it sits very close to the skin. At first I got a smell of something citrusy which settled to a soft jasmine-like scent (but not as heavy). Definately a good choice for summer or spring. But for me, I like my fragrances to be stronger.
