Raghba

The first inhale is thick with smoke and sweetness. Not the bright, playful kind of sugar, but something darker—burned, caramelised, hovering over glowing embers. Vanilla arrives already charred, wrapped in resinous warmth, the air heavy with incense and wood. It feels immediate and enveloping, as if the fragrance has no patience for preliminaries. This is not a scent that opens politely; it asserts itself. Only later does the name reveal its intent. Raghba—written رغبة—is the Arabic word for desire. Want. Craving. Hunger. Few fragrances wear their meaning so honestly. Its presence in my collection was unplanned, the result of a restless appetite for unfamiliar scents. I came across it by chance: a solitary bottle on a shelf, nestled among more celebrated Middle Eastern releases. After consulting retailer descriptions, fragrance databases, and specialist perfume encyclopaedias, it became clear that Raghba by Ard Al Zaafaran appears with slightly varying note pyramids depending on the source—hardly unusual for long-running Middle Eastern bestsellers. The tester was unavailable, but most listings agreed on a core of sugar, incense, and spices. That was enough. At under €15 for 50ml, the blind buy felt justified. I expected excessive sweetness, perhaps something cloying. Instead, the sugar and vanilla take a different path: spiced, smoky, and woody, never tipping into full gourmand indulgence. With repeated wearings and cross-referencing the most consistent note listings, a clear structure emerges. Raghba opens with a dense vanilla–oud accord, where sweetness and resinous woods collide almost simultaneously rather than unfolding through a clean, citrus-style top. There’s a subtle boozy nuance—aged liquor rather than syrup—paired with dry, spiced vanilla and fine wood shavings, particularly creamy sandalwood. Once the initial alcohol burn dissipates, the composition reveals itself in layers. The woody accord recalls Santal 33 Eau de Parfum in both character and roughness. Any oud present is restrained: clean, mild, and entirely approachable. This is oud without menace, well-suited even to newcomers. The spices add warmth rather than sharpness, steering the scent firmly into oriental gourmand territory rather than classic woody oud. The heart is unmistakably incense-led and sweet, producing a smoky, dessert-like effect often compared to burning vanilla sugar over embers. Musk emerges early and persists throughout the fragrance’s life. The incense avoids anything overtly clerical or church-bound; instead, it feels fumy and resinous, wrapping the sweetness in shadow. Together with the vanilla, it creates an aura that feels far more sophisticated than the note list might suggest. The sugar here is dark brown cane sugar—softly sweet, faintly caramelised, with a subtle molasses earthiness that grounds the composition. In the drydown, sandalwood and amber smooth everything into a creamy, slightly balsamic base. Musk anchors the structure and contributes to the fragrance’s impressive longevity. An animalic undertone that surfaced quietly in the heart now becomes more apparent, lending a skin-like warmth and a subtle sensual tension. The amber is classic and familiar—warm, sweet, and resinous—eschewing the sharp, salty penetration of modern ambroxan. Some note listings mention rose, leather, or saffron, but they remain elusive to my nose, subsumed by the dominant structure. At its core, Raghba is unapologetically centred on vanilla, incense, sugar, oud, and amber—and it commits fully to that identity. Performance is confidently moderate to strong. Projection is clear during the first few hours, with a noticeable cloud of vanilla and incense. It then settles closer to the skin, becoming more intimate yet still present, particularly in cooler air or enclosed spaces. Compliments came unprompted. Longevity is well above average, and on clothing, smoky and spicy traces persist into the following day. Raghba does not disappear; it melts into the skin, growing softer, sweeter, and more musky over time. It thrives in cool seasons and evening wear. This is the SAME as that Raghba of Lattafa. Just tested them both . The sweet sugary vanillic oudh with a sandalwood dry down. Smoky, of course. But not masculine. At all.

Beautiful and affordable but not long lasting on any material. I wouldn’t recommend this for a masculine person, it smells very womanly.
