Tobacco & Tonka Bean

Well, my first proper review and I've not got a trained nose or anything so I'm really not sure what use this is to anyone but I'm really getting into fragrances and here are my impressions as a complete novice!! :) I used 5 sprays onto moisturised skin. 2 on the neck/upper chest area, 1 behind both ears, 1 back of the neck. I wasn't especially won over by the first sprays. I'm guessing it was the plum/pear combination that I didn't quite love? There was nothing particularly wrong with it and the fruitiness was nice but for 2 minutes it just seemed a bit too loud. Speaking of the fruitiness I could only really pick out the plum and didn't detect any pear but I'm early into fragrance journey so that is probably my nose. After the first 20-30 minutes I don't really detect the plum anymore and the scent has settled into what seems to be tonka/vanilla/tobacco combo. The tonka and vanilla is what seems to shine the most, the tobacco is definitely there but I only pick it up a bit closer to the skin. It seems to pick up a slightly creamy smell to my nose as well, I have no idea if it is the coconut that is giving it that creaminess? If not, then I do not detect the coconut at all. For 3-4 hours I had a good scent bubble around myself and could smell the scent pretty much constantly during this time. I'm not sure if I was leaving trails or not but since I wear perfume for myself only this really isn't a concern for me. Between hours 4-8 I can still smell the scent occasionally especially when I am walking around, pretty much just the tonka and vanilla combo though but again if I dig my nose right in then I can still detect the tobacco. There is definitely no evolving of the scent, after the first 20-30 minutes what you smell will be it until the end. If you are not a fan of sweet fragrances then I would say stay clear of this one, especially if it is the tobacco leaf note you are chasing as it very much plays second fiddle to that sweet tonka/vanilla combo. I loved this perfume and was surprised that it lasted so long, and it kept my mood up on such a cold damp miserable day and at £20 I think was a steal.

So, to my nose this smells way more like Cherry than Banana Rrepublic Dark Cherry & Amber does. I suppose that this may be a "Cherry Tobacco & Tonka??:, bc Im getting strong cherry vibes and to my nose it even smells a bit like like Lost Cherry by Tom Ford or Maison Alhambra's Lovely Cherry just with a bit more powdery amber bc of the Tonka Bean. Anyone else get that at all? Also, I see many folks are saying they get very poor projection/longevity, but I sprayed 3 sprays of this on my hand to try it, went over to my Moms about an hour later and she said it was "too strong" and "Why'd you put so much on", and after that it lasted on my hand 5 -6 hours with pretty good projection for about 2 hours sooo... idk whats goin' on with folk's noses, and Im a smoker who's VERRRY picky when it comes to performance and Fragrances, so idk what to say except I get good performance from this, so I definately agree with @chelfett who left similar comments regarding the performance a couple comments down from me. This may be one of the better performing scents in this line actually, although 78 Vintage Green is my fave, it cant touch this in performance (sadly). Now, what I will say is that when I initially sprayed this on my hand, and put my hand up to my nose for a whiff, I couldn't really smell much of anything, but after it heated up on my skin for a few minutes, it DEFINATELY started projecting quite well. Now, since I LOOOOVE cherry ANYTHING, and consider this a Cherry Tobacco fragrance, its a very strong like from me, although maybe a tad redundant bc I own Lovely Cherry as well. Anyways, Great fragrance with pretty darn good performance ta' boot. Definately Recommended ESPECIALLY if you can find it at a rack store like did for freakin' $19.99! Sweet fruity plum, that dries down to a creamy vanilla tobacco scent. I think the sweetness may be the tonka beans, but I don't detect any coconut or pear. I've seen some reviews saying they don't detect tobacco; idk what their expectation is, but I have a few tobacco dominant fragrances and have smelled a number of other fragrances with a tobacco note, and I definitely smell the tobacco in this one. I really love the smell. It's quite unique, dare I say niche quality? It's very smooth and well blended, no hint of anything synthetic, does not have a designer vibe to it, and develops as it dries down. If it was sold in a fancier bottle for hundreds, people wouldn't hesitate to call it niche. So, I really love this scent. However, there are a couple of caveats. First, the elephant in the room: the performance is dogsh!t. You'd have to be intimately close to the wearer to detect it. Also, the whole thing becomes a skin scent in a couple of hours and is completely gone by 4-5 hours time. Second, although this is a unisex fragrance, it is better suited for females in my opinion. I enjoy wearing this at home for myself, I'll spray some on my arm, so that I can take whiffs of it (while it lasts). But I would never wear this and go outside. But I am crazy for the scent! One more W for this fragrance: you can find these at discount stores for days! Usually circling the $20 pricetag.

I picked up this fragrance yesterday at Burlington for only $19.99. I don't think i ever owned a fragrance with a Tobacco note in it. I usually stay away from fragrances that may seem to harsh. But Tonka Bean & Tobacco sounded too interesting not to try. Upon first spray, I get a warm blend of sweet Plum and Tobacco. I was immediately in love. I've never smelled something so beautiful and uniquely done. Maybe I've been depriving myself of Tobacco fragrances all along lol. But as this fragrance settles, the Plum softens and it's joined by Tonka Bean. That Tonka Bean and Tobacco combo takes you on a nice ride for a few hours until the dry down, where the Tobacco fades and you're left with Tonka Bean and a hint of Vanilla. I could not smell the Coconut or Pear, which i was looking forward to. But this fragrance is so beautifully done, i could care less about what i couldn't smell. Gino Percontino deserves all of the accolades for creating this masterpiece. This lasted for a good 4 and a half hours and has a good 3 feet of sillage in the first 2 hours of wearing this fragrance. Overall, i am highly satisfied with this purchase and i encourage all fragrance lovers/enthusiasts to give this a sniff. It's beyond worthy of what you'll pay for it. Scent: 10/10 Packaging: 7/10 Performance: 7/10

Because I am both a hater of sweet, fruity, vanilla scents and a psychopath, I blind bought this. But I've learned that BR fragrances are never fairly represented by the notes, in my defense. This is no different. It has a touch more vanilla when first sprayed, but that mostly goes away in the dry down. The plum and tobacco really shine for me, with a little sweetness from tonka (not so much vanilla) that enhances the overall scent instead of overpowering it. I also really dislike coconut (see earlier psychopath comment) but I don't get much of that here. It may contribute a slight creaminess to the final scent, but I wouldn't have known it was there unless I read the notes. The accords on this one are baffling. But nevertheless, I truly recommend trying this, even if the listed notes would normally scare you off. For the record, this is what I wanted from Decadence and Good Girl, but was thoroughly denied. The sillage is standard for a tonka/vanilla heavy fragrance. The lasting is good on me - not eternal - but lasting 6-8 at a minimum. In a weird way, it reminds me of Kayali's Invite Only Amber 23. The notes are NOT the same, but they both have just enough sweetness to make the other notes shine, while not being so sickeningly sweet and making sweetness it's entire personality.

It's so good. I tried Solinotes Tonka as I was nearing the end of my decant of this, and it's in the same vicinity, but not as deep and rich, and not as long lasting. I've gotten a compliment on this, and that's not something I go for--I tend to wear a spray or 2 for my own enjoyment. One time I wore three of this when I really needed the mood lift and was told I smell really good. The coworker who told me this wears Cloud so there's definitely a friendly quality to this perfume that I think would appeal to most people. Sweet, cheerful. There's something a bit funky right in the opening, right up close, that I think is an aspect of the tonka note, because a lot of prominent-tonka perfumes give me that vibe. I'm thinking of a couple high end ones that are actually just too much for me. Feve Delicieuse, and Tom Ford FF. This one is less serious and more wearable than Volutes (which I adore) and more interesting to me than Tobacco Vanille, which is smoother but is also pretty much what it says on the tin. I'd say it's more 'synthetic' smelling than either of those. But after a few hours the sillage is a balanced, sweet but natural vanilla. The bottle is gorgeous and I'm reusing the outer box because it is too.

8/10. I've had misgivings over this one, but ultimately, Tobacco and Tonka Bean is a good fragrance.. and I want to share the most honest and important parts of my opinion so far. There was one critical factor that got me to this high rating. The initial spray is alright, not so great. It has a very fruity overtone (plum), with the two title notes peeking around the corner. That plum doesn't work (for me) at all. The opening and first 30 minutes somehow remind me of the scent of Old Navy back in 2010, very clothing store signature-esque. Neither good nor bad, just unusual and distinctive. And that was pretty much the same as my initial take on this fragrance. HOWEVER... This fragrance quickly grew on me when I discovered that during the drydown, most of the fruitiness mostly goes away. After that, it smells smooth, somewhat lotion like, but more masculine and WAY more appealing- very beautiful and very high quality. For twenty bucks at Burlington, this is definitely a bang for your buck- just trust my word that you might not like the opening (particularly as a guy), but give the fragrance time. This alone brought it from a like to a love. I will be wearing this quite often as a fall-daytime fragrance. 8/10

Update from my review from July 7th, 2023: I do stand by that review, although I have gotten used to the top notes of the fragrance and enjoy that part more. But now I must say: this fragrance is an absolute performance BEAST for me. I sprayed roughly 5/6 sprays before an eight hour work shift to test out its longevity; three on the neck and some on the shirt; and it lasted for about 7-8 hours, INSANELY GOOD performance and longevity for a perfume of the price. It faded a bit throughout the life of it; but really, it only significantly degenerated in strength after seven hours had passed, and remained strong for nearly my entire shift. I have more expensive fragrances that don't last even four hours. Overall, my rating of this fragrance has elevated significantly. 9.3/10, and it is definitely worth a buy- it will grow on you. I was not expecting this fragrance to have the best performance of any fragrance in my collection (I have about 25-30 frags)- but somehow, it won that by a landslide. This is my favorite casual work scent, by far; it is one of those frags that I can treat like my "best friend", always there for me but not overly obnoxious.

At the very top is all warm vanilla. Or tonka bean, not sure. I don't have a refined enough nose yet to tell, but it's that style. Very soft and a touch of powder. In the middle I start to get small hits of tobacco. Very slightly reminiscent of a Black & Mild cigar but it would need more tobacco and a smoke note to get there. I do wish there was more tobacco coming through. The tobacco does start coming through as this dries. Still not as prominent as the vanilla/tonka bean but the two are feeling a little more connected together. This kind of reminds me of a less synthetic/more refined Pi by Givenchy. The deepest part of the dry down after about 4 hours and it's only a skin scent is a noticeably sweeter vanilla note. It's interesting how much sweeter it gets so much later. Maybe my favorite part is how lovely the (skin only) vanilla is. Very creamy. Since this smells like (mostly) vanilla and (slightly) tobacco, some might wonder how this compares to Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille. That one is more like a heavy leather bomber coat and this one is like a light velvet smoking jacket. That one is like a tractor and this one is like a coupe.

Rating: 8.0/10 Honestly, I was completely impressed by Tobacco and Tonka Bean by Banana Republic. After hearing about this fragrance from a YouTuber, I made a promise to myself that if I ever stumbled across it at Burlington, I would give it a shot. At just $20, it's an absolute steal. The combination of its affordable price and exceptional quality is what keeps me coming back for more Banana Republic bottles. From the moment I sprayed Tobacco and Tonka Bean, I was captivated by its addictive blend of vanilla, tobacco, and plum. This unexpected combination caught me off guard in the best way possible. The aroma that projects is an air of mystery while smelling absolutely fantastic. I found myself constantly bringing my wrist to my nose, unable to get enough of its alluring scent. I even caught myself saying out loud, “Damn, this smells amazing!” Banana Republic has truly mastered the art of creating exceptional fragrances, and in my opinion, Tobacco and Tonka Bean reigns supreme. It's a delectable addition to any collection, with a perfect balance of sweetness, vanilla, and tobacco.

This might be the most full-on unisex scent I've come across, and it's a darn good one. The names says it all, as you get a warm sweet tonka bean (and vanilla) base balanced with a mellow smooth tobacco. The tobacco doesn't demand attention in and of itself, but serves more to keep the fragrance from becoming cloying. It also adds a darker and slightly mysterious note that keeps this one firmly in the unisex territory. If you want a loud and clear tobacco scent, this probably isn't the one. But if you want a super smooth and subtly rich blend, it's a go. The longevity is solid but this one isn't a big projector. I don't mind that at all, as this one works really well as a more intimate aroma. If there's any criticism, it might be that this scent is pretty linear, but otherwise it's a fantastic scent at a really good price. I'm a pretty traditional and masculine guy and I like this one on me and would also love it on a woman. Side note: the bottle is also very attractive and the dark purple color suits the scent perfectly. Don't pass on this one.

If Hypnotic Poison and Tobacco Vanille had a baby, this would be their plum drunk grandchild maybe. Not a direct dupe to either but definitely in the same sort of scent family. The plum & pear combo reads as slightly boozy, which was surprising. Despite the fruitiness, it’s definitely rich and grown up smelling, vaguely gothic even, but definitely not like a super youthtful and fruit forward body spray sort of plum note. Together with the tonka there’s a definite palpable Playdough underbelly, you’ll either like it or you won’t. (If you like the vaguely Playdough bits of Hypnotic Poison, you will like this. I personally really like it.) All together this perfume is beautifully blended and opulent - I don’t get an overwhelming sweetness like some other reviews, and I don’t get an overwhelming spicy vibe from the tobacco either. It’s just sort of a soft, vaguely boozy and cozy just-more-than-skin scent that sticks around a long time, especially in cooler weather. The drydown is especially beautiful. A wonderful buy for 20 bucks.

So happy I got this. Such a well blended fragrance! Found it at Burlington and got the little bottle, opened it in the car with my husband and we both tested it on skin. Needless to say, he ran back in and exchanged for the big bottle! 😂 This is unisex leaning masculine. It’s a creamy, sweet tobacco but not in the way most tobacco fragrances are. It’s like you have an exotic unsmoked cigar in your breast pocket and are sipping a glass of some sort of liquor 🥃. Vanilla and tonka really shine in this fragrance and bring a nutty, powdery sweetness without being a toothache. I hardly get any coconut if not at all but maybe it just really blends with the tonka for that added creaminess. Both my husband and I are going to wear this. I don’t know how it will perform in the winter (I imagine better) but it’s a beast in the summer so I’ll put it away for a cooler day.

Tobacco & Tonka Bean by Banana Republic strikes a great balance between warm and seductive without going overboard. Think more “well-dressed bad influence” than “ashtray.” This isn’t a dirty, smoky tobacco—it’s more like the scent of someone who might have had a cigar an hour ago, but now they’re wrapped in a cozy sweater and subtle cologne. It’s got this cozy-yet-sexy feel that really works in cooler weather or on a night out. Performance is decent for the price, though it’s not a beast. Projection stays moderate, and longevity is around 5–6 hours on skin. For something this affordable, it punches above its weight in scent profile. If you want something warm, inviting, and just a little rebellious, this one’s worth a shot.

I just bought a big bottle at Burlington for $20. I was looking for either a leather or tobacco scent for the fall/winter with some vanilla. I love plum in my fragrances so I knew i would love this. First initial spray I get a very dry plum and tobacco that almost smells like BO, I did not like this at all, at first. You really have to let this one settle in your skin before the tonka comes in. Once it dries down it has a very nice suede scent with a tiny touch of sweetness. The tobacco is there but its not prominent so dont be afraid of the tobacco note it's more in the back round than anything once it dries. This is gorgeous and intimate. Perfect for fall/winter. Can't wait to let this one sit and macerate a little bit. I can tell this one is going to be a beauty, although I do wish it was a bit sweeter for my taste.

Bought it at Burlington about two months ago, and the first time I sprayed it I was majorly disappointed by the smell, the duration, and the projection of the fragrance, but I only spent around 20 bucks on it and the bottle is a beautiful purple color which looks good in my little perfume closet. A few days ago I decide to spray it on again and my god did everything about it improve. Smelled amazing, more sweet than tobacco in my opinion. Protected well, my wife could smell me more than an Arms length away, and did last a good 5 hours before the smell started to fade. Got compliments at work as well which I loved getting. I hope to find more at the local stores as I am sure the resellers are jacking the prices up online. If you happen to see it at less than $25 I highly recommend it.

Lovely, warm, creamy...are my first impressions of Banana Republic Tobacco & Tonka Bean. If you are looking for a tobacco dominant fragrance, this is probably not the one. The tobacco note is very faint...and I probably would reverse the name and call it Tonka Bean and Tobacco, but lovely nonetheless. This is Unisex, and it smells amazing on both Men and Women. Moderate sillage, moderate longevity (lasts longer on clothes) and a great price. Found this at Burlington Coat Factory and paid $20. I love how it dries on my skin. For Fall and Winter this can be the perfect scent - sweater weather, hot chocolate weather, Christmas shopping weather .. bundled up, ...straight thru the New Year. Surround yourself in this creamy Tonka cloud and enjoy!

Im honestly NOT understanding why folks say tbis fragrance is so fleeting?! I get average longevity on skin and quite good longevity on clothes where I can easily pick up on Tobacco & Tonka bean the following day, again ON CLOTHES. And believe me, Im a performance whore and really dislike fragrances with poor longevity bc I find fragrances that smell great, yet have poor performance just plain irritating bc they just leave me wanting more. Anyways, back to Tobacco & Tonka Bean. Im also surprised that people don't get the similarities to Tom Ford's Lost Cherry and Tobacco & Tonka Bean. They smell almost identical to my nose and I actually find that the Banana Republic actually performs BETTER than the Tom Ford does.

Let’s talk about Tobacco and Tonka Bean, if you like the Code DNA I’m sure you will like this, similar but by no means the same or a clone. This opens fruity, very plum and a little pear. Then the tobacco and coconut comes in, with a little tropical vibe, and it is also on the sweeter side. After a few hours this turns into a Tonka/Vanilla base that is dreamy creamy. A very non linear scent and those that say it is is are just going by the sweetness. I would say there is nothing on the market the same as this. Blind buy? Well this gets a 4.32 rating out of over 500+ votes here. So what does that tell you? BUY IT! If you want a freshie to go with this then get their Vintage Green, then you have all seasons covered,

This is a strong like rather than a love for me. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, the blend is very nice, it stands up well to contemporaries like Tobacco Vanille (agree with Tran Tran, just slightly less vanilla, but I would say it has slightly less depth), it.. just doesn't stand out as really special, if that makes sense. I do think this would make a fantastic base layering perfume though - for such a good price point you could play with it with other samples without is costing you a second mortgage. Honesly, it is worth it if just for that! Edit: Actually.. upgraded to a love. The longer I sit with it, the more I like it.. to the point that I just bought a full bottle
