Musk Cologne

My wife loves Dior Homme Cologne (nice citrus + musk) but the musk is weak and it doesn't have the longevity obviously..... So knowing Bortnikoff's reputation for making strong natural fragrances I thought I'd test this out, and got a 5ml sample. Obviously this is very different but the difference between the 2 did surprise me.... The citrus here takes a back seat to the Musk which is very strong and slightly animalic... After 10 minutes the musk settles down and it's a very beautiful, fluffy smell. But the musk is still overpowering the citrus if you ask me.... I was hoping to have the citrus strength of DHC + Bortnikoff's strong musk and longevity... but actually side by side DHC seems to have more citrus. And Yes I've sampled Bortnikoff's other Cologne's like "Oud Cologne" which has more citrus then this one.... not just comparing to DHC ... so I wish this one also had more citrus. The wifey likes this which is a rare occurrence but DHC is her favorite cologne for me to wear... I think this could definitely be worn anytime the weather is warm, day/night. Scent: 8.5/10 Longevity: 8/10 Overall: 8.5/10 Edit: I recently got a sample of Musk Khabib as well and I think that was exactly what I was looking for.... now that I'm smelling the 2 side by side, I can see how Musk Cologne does infact have a lot of citrus, but it's a deeper tangerine/orange scent that's almost too ripe that I wasn't really paying attention to versus something lighter you'd find in most other citrus forward fragrances. The lack of those notes in Musk Habib and and with it made a little more dirty way with the addition of cardamom gives the citrus more balance and longevity. IMO Musk Khabib is better than Musk Cologne, but my wife prefers the Cologne so I'll be getting a bottle of that one shortly since I like it as well... hopefully overtime she'll appreciate Khabib more :) Edit #2: I also sampled Amber Cologne and fell in love with it and ended up buying 2 bottles because I love it so much and can't imagine living without it. My next purchase will be Musk Khabib sometime down the line....

This scent clearly shows the evolution and blueprint of the super talented Dmitry Bortnikoff, as it feels very polished, and with a perfect aromatic equilibrium and vibrancy while still packing a ton of depth. I absolutely love Musk Cologne , I feel like the opening is brilliantly composed, with the delicate floral arrangement laced to a juicy citrus cocktail that for a second reminded me of Amber Cologne but sweeter and richer, During the second portion of the scent development the sandalwood reveals a truly special dry down, and there’s even a vibe as if there was some oud in the mix, even though Dmitry doesn’t mention any oud in the pyramid available to the public, my guess is that the musk can contribute to the subtle funkiness and sensuality of the blend. Overall, this is one of Bortnikoff’s best creations as of right now, and to be completely honest, I feel like the name Musk Cologne comes across as a humble title that actually simplifies the complexity and beauty of a scent that I would’ve named perhaps “Fume d’Palazzo”

I really love this fragrance and prefer it over Musk Khabib and Amber Cologne, both of which seem disjoint and inelegant to my nose due to clumsy use of spices and/or florals. Musk Cologne really has some of the most refined and stratospheric citruses, all blended to perfection, giving the impression of a vintage Creed before gross dilution became a deal breaker for me with this brand. In fact it has some elements of Erolfa (melon-like notes), but most resembles Millésime Imperial in structure and composition. While there is no salt or sea notes as in MI, the natural musk seems to give it a kind of wild outdoorsy vibe that acts as a perfect substitute, but provide even more heft. One of the best blended Bortnikoffs I have tried and a real dream for summer, possibly one of the best summer scents available, and certainly gives the best Roja citruses a run for their money.

I really appreciate the bottle of this I own. It's a real work of art to my nose. I experience a full on juicy and sweet, almost watery, tangerine note. The citrus opening lasts for quite some time (it especially stays long lasting if you've sprayed some onto fabric or hair) as it gives way to a well blended middle stage of the florals and the use of genuine natural musk, which is unlike the synthetic musk experience. It's hard to put this perfume into words really and I don't feel able to do it justice. The soft sandalwood base continues to run througout and the whole ride is super soft and just dreamy. A really lovely citrus/musk/sandalwood based scent and one I keep as a staple in my collection.

This one stands out as the best performer from the cologne line, it has an even better performance than his big brother Musk Khabib. It’s a fragrance that's both fresh and deep, with a fluffy musk that’s simply to die for. The scent opens with a sunny, lemony burst that immediately lifts your spirits. There’s a light, flowery touch that adds a cheerful, happy vibe to the mix. But the star here is the slightly animalic musk, which brings a rich, deep quality to the 'cologne'. For me, this is a perfect spring day and summer evening scent. A warmer, slightly more complex feeling version of Amber Cologne. The opening is the citrus fruit combo of Bortnikoff you know and love that fades into an exotic floral bouquet of lily of the valley, tuberose, magnolia, and ylang. All of the florals were individually noticeable, but the ylang popped the most on my skin. I really didn't pick up any of the green tea. Rather than the sandal-vanilla-ambergris drydown of AC, Musk Cologne sports a fluffy, warm deer musk with a soft, balanced woodiness that's equal parts sandal and guaiac. I may love this one even more than Amber Cologne.

Absolutely love this. Signature scent worthy. This is literally the first time where I can smell and spray a perfume over periods of time with complete ease. And I figured out why that is: All-natural, or close to it. I seriously believe that it has an effect, because any other perfume bottle i've bought out of loving the juice initially, I literally then get buyer's remorse or I don't even spray it anymore. My conclusion is that the abundance of synthetics don't jive with my sense of smell. My congratulations on pretty much the whole line-up. Amber cologne is incredible too, just too short-lived. This however, lasts!

Nice new addition to the house. Easy to wear for everyday year round. It is like the big brother of Amber Colonge with more citrus. If you are a fan of sweet/citrus/musk perfumes with a punch during the dry down please give this a shot! You will love it. Wished the citrus and top notes lasted 2-3 hours longer but the first few hours were glorious. Never smelled anything like it. The dry down is okay 8/10 but damn the opening and first few bits and pieces I pick up from this perfume is a definite 10 for natural blends

This perfume is just wowzers, the opening is phenomenal! Unfortunately for me, I avoid buying perfume with real musk (personal ethical decision) but I was sent a sample of this and there is no denying it smells fantastic. I wish this was also made with a synthetic musk alternative option because it would be high on my wish list. The musk seems to play a very minor part anyway but just knowing it’s in there would keep me from buying it. But it sure does smell amazing!!

Wow! Lovely opening, mandarine-like citric and floral at the same time, just gorgeous and hard to explain. 10 minutes in, the musk comes up and pushes everything else back, with a grand sta(b)le urine/manure aspect. 30/40 minutes in, there's a mix of a non specific floral + orange + ylang and musk that is ABSOLUTELY MESMERIZING (to my nose). If it's really natural deer musk, I think I understand the appeal now. 10/10 in my book.

Tropical flowers melding with citrus tangerine notes is soon joined by a rich musk and lovely sandalwood. These notes are constantly dancing around each other. There is also a hint of what smells like oud within this beautiful composition. I get several hours in longevity with moderate projection, it does stay close to you. All in all a lovely exotic smelling scent with quality natural ingredients.

Musk Cologne is Amber Cologne’s more interesting and older sister, the familial DNA is easily recognizable. Citrus opening with florals, morphing into a floral with a natural musk drydown (I’m not sure I’ve ever smelled real deer musk before?). Not a big projector, but this is a natural perfume and not expected. Beautiful and complex. I love it.

Perfect to enjoy a summer day and make us feel more confident and ready to appreciate the day. It starts fresh with citrus and musk and then unveils even more personality and keeps asking to be smelled repeatedly Sandalwood reigns in the background and behind oud says quietly....i ́m here . Grown on me immensely. Actual prefer now over Amber Cologne which I really enjoy. Safe scent for office and warmer temps. Dmitry knows how to weave his magic and I seem to be caught in his web. Just a great opening which has shorter longevity than his usual norm. But Impressed once again.

I have Triad and Khabib. The citrus, juicy natural musk in this one is unique, beautiful and easily a favorite. Must have spring/summer choice if your into musks. Bortnikoff is becoming my favorite.

My least favorite Cologne from my discovery set. Musk Cologne opens up very musky (duh) and with a very prominent candied orange note. I see tangerine is listed as a note and I can see it, but to me it's more so a candied orange. It's not syrupy or synthetic but I do find it off putting in its contrast with the heavy muskiness of the fragrance. The opening doesn't smell bad by any means, I just find the orange a tad bit too sweet for my liking. As the fragrance dries the orange is replaced by a smooth ylang-ylang, quite similar to the ylang-ylang from Amber Cologne and slightly sharper than the one from Musk Khabib. Speaking of Amber Cologne, Musk Cologne is nowhere near as similar to it as the ratio of upvotes/downvotes in the "This perfume reminds me of" section would make it seem, they're extremely different fragrances overall that share mild similarities, namely the ylang-ylang. In the deeper dry down this becomes a detergent-like clean skin scent, but I mean this in the best possible way, don't think this becomes a generic detergent from the laundromat kind of scent. Ultimately from the three Colognes that came in my discovery set (Amber, Musk and Oud, Cologne de Feu is from another collection) this is my least favorite one but it's a nice fragrance nonetheless. Performance is very similar to that of Oud Cologne, moderate to strong projection during the opening minutes, weakens to a moderate to intimate projection afterwards. Dense sillage at first but also mellows down quickly to a light sillage and subsequently a skin scent in a matter of an hour. Longevity is on the shorter side as it's very weak on my skin at the four hour mark, it might barely reach 6 hours in total.

A great starting point if you're wishing to get to know the Bortnikoff line. This sums up the best you'll get in the rest of the fragrances: high quality ingredients, Dmitry's fabulous blending skills and a mesmerizing aroma. Once you get more and more into sampling these fragrances it becomes pretty obvious that there is a link between many of these perfumes: this flower you get in a will appear in d and f... the cocoa found in c is the same in f and h and so on. Only some of the ouds seem to be different. Some people call it the dna of the brand. In my opinion these variations work well in that you may find in a fragrance what you were hoping to get in another one, but there's eventually a feeling of some comfort zone and lack of inspiration. I don't mind it, as most of them smell exquisite anyway. As for Musk cologne, I had tried Musk Khabib before this and got head over heels with that one, so by the time I sampled this one, it felt somehow connected to it, the musk-ylang ylang accord especially, but this being easier to wear without a doubt. However, this is far from being as unique and complex as Musk Khabib, imho it's less interesting, more like a stripped down flanker or a summer edition. Don't get me wrong: this is far from being dull. In fact, I'd go as far as saying I'd probably choose this one over that one because I'd definitely wear it more often. Its price, closer to the more expensive ones, shouldn't deter anyone from sampling it as it performs quite well. I wouldn't be surprised if this ranked among the top sellers of the house. Well deserved reputation.

Bought a sample of this along with my order from their website. To me this is not as good as Musk Khabib - it's like a bit more stinky (animalic) version of it - especially in the opening. They share the same DNA. I don't really feel the citruses complement the musk as well as the (superpowered) ylang-ylang in the Khabib. Not only that but they feel rather weak in general. So this feels less lively and a bit more dull in comparison. Whereas Khabib is addictive and intoxicating, the Musk is just pleasant.' On dry down the differences between them shrink somewhat - but Khabib maintains the tropical tang that this one simply doesn't have. Still, in the absence of Musk Khabib this would have been a great one to have, though for me it's also overshadowed by something like Chypre Du Nord from the same house.

A lovely wearable floral citrus musk composition that will appeal to even non-musk lovers. The perfume opens with a flurry of citruses with dominant orange and bergamot before moving to a floral heart comprised of lily of the valley, magnolia, ylang-ylang, tuberose and green tea. The perfume settles into the deer musk base surrounded by sandalwood and guaiac wood. Overall a very pleasant and happy, if somewhat unexceptional scent that will offend almost no one. High quality natural ingredients (including the deer musk) and well blended. A unisex musk fragrance that can even be worn in warm weather. Moderate sillage and good projection and longevity. Enjoy!

Nice daytime, summer spring scent. The name doesn't quite fit but it does have a hint of musk after drydown. This could easily be a signature scent for everyday wear. Not strong but fitting for office wear or casual daytime events. Definitely won't offend buy maynot garner complimants as it sits close to the skin.

It smells like straight-up tangerines in the opening, sort of cheap but as it drys down its gains more depth and quality.

As someone who has always sought out the most naturally scented perfumes, I decided to give real deer musk a chance and purchased a 5 ml decant of it. The opening was pleasant, with orange note that pleased me. There was no lemony sharpness. At the end of the first hour, the musk made its presence known, but its projection significantly decreased. While sitting on the sofa in the house I was visiting, I could barely detect the fragrance on my chest, even though I had sprayed it twice. It was nice, but not extraordinary. Later, after some time, I tried it again. The opening was still pleasant, but I realised I didn't like this musk. Additionally, the projection remained weak. Instead, I would prefer Mousse Illumine, although I wasn't so enamoured with it to purchase a full bottle. Thus, my encounter with deer musk has come to an end. Pass

I can detect a similar DNA in Moss Cologne, but instead of the moss it's a slightly nasty musk. I have a full bottle now of Moss Cologne because I loved its opening so much. But I'm not too big on this Musk Cologne. Instead of a brilliant moss-citrus melange it's a quasi mildewed smell almost like a damp article of clothing left in a washer for way too long. Or the smell of a public restroom when the old urine combines with the last of the urinal cleaning product. OK, not that bad, but leaning in that direction. And certainly not high perfumery in my opinion. The performance, like Moss Cologne, is terrible, and I'm not a "Performance Bro". I look at the vibrant accord and note listing for Musk Cologne, and its rating and reviews, and expect much more. I like Moss Cologne and Amber Cologne, but not this.

Stunning opening... 30 minutes in it smells like stagnant urine - disgusting. I thought the stale urine smell would pass but it does not. EDIT: I gotta, say, my sample has aged a bit and that "stale urine" smell that I described might be perceptible right off the skin but it morphs into a wonderful depth in the sillage. This is a beautiful fragrance, I'm strongly considering buying a full bottle of it after revisiting my sample.

A subtle and extremely seductive animalic note. Niche perfumery often involves creating polarising fragrances for a very specific target audience. This refers not only to the 'gold coins' typically required, but also to the specific sensory experience and mindset evoked by the fragrance. Dmitry Bortnikoff creates fragrances that he would wear himself, and he does so with great expertise. I am sure that he also selects some of the ingredients himself. He is a creative type. He has retained his childlike qualities. Instead of playing with the fire department, he now "plays" with scents, fragrances and ingredients. Wearability and underlying mood are always at the forefront of his mind. In any case, his fragrances also incorporate his cherished flowers as floral notes. Building on the success of Bortnikoff's Amber Cologne, Musk Cologne is another of his masterpieces. While sandalwood oil is typically used as a carrier in traditional perfumery, Dmitry prefers to create his own in order to preserve and transport dissolved floral oils and fragrances. In this instance, the substance in question is a musk tincture. Other fragrances often use oud oils, which are renowned for their rich, woody aromas that impart depth and complexity to any scent, as well as a distinctive character. The result is a beautifully intoxicating fragrance with a classic feel. It can be described in just a few words. Fresh floral notes of white blossom and zesty orange rise above a soft, light, creamy base of musk. The opening is characterised by an intense, bold citrus note and a fruity, fresh scent. The tartness of tangerine peel gives this lively opening a bite, creating a refreshing and invigorating experience. Then a fresh breeze blows by, leading you into a mysterious heart phase full of floral dew and morning freshness. There's a hint of creamy tuberose and lily of the valley, accompanied by a touch of slightly tart, diluted green tea. Instant love. Goodness gracious this is amazing. The coolest thing about Bortnikoff, in my humble opinion, is not its ouds but the materials used to compose flowers and fruits: They are just impeccable. So I get particularly excited when I see they launched a scent where ouds aren't the front and center, but a support blanket. That aside, the opening man. Burst of fresh, sweet tangerine and astringent bergamot with the citrus punch of lemons. Meyer lemons? I think so. These are married to the ylang-ylang and they create a classic gentleman's opening, but fruitier - without the aldehydes and the bureaucracy. In the middle, you get a pretty bouquet of magnolia, LOTV and a lost tuberose. Not a bubblegum tuberose, not an overly indolic tuberose. A tuberose that bonds to the sandalwood quite well and is enhanced by the tea. Note that the tea comes later in the game than it usually does. I particularly prefer scents were tuberose competes with another note, as it can easily overwhelm a fragrance for my personal taste. Now, all of this is being filtered by a very soft and neutral muskiness, so the citrus isn't as spiky and it preserves elegance. It's almost as if the musk was the stage and the other notes played the symphony. In the drydown the oud and the sandalwood play their goodbye tune. It's a little melancholic in comparison, like a beautiful story with a sad goodbye. Beautiful scent.

Ask a musk lover I bought this blind and gave it several full wearings and several partial tests (spray arms only in the evenings) so I could fully understand it before committing to an opinon. I will first state what I dislike, although it's not a deal breaker, because I enjoy the perfume. I knew going in that it has LOTV, ylang and tuberose, all things I avoid if they are prominent, although I do like some tuberose dominant scents. I'm also not big on tea dominant scents, but it's barely here. All the other notes I like. LOVE citruses, love sandalwood, really like magnolia, LOVE musk. Once the florals die off, what you're left with is a warm deer musk that smells really good. I get tiny tiny guaiac but it's not smokey. I wish the musk was dosed higher but this is a cologne afterall, so it's meant to be fresh and clean. I wish they would have added this musk to cologne Celeste. Summary: fresh and soapy clean, with a warm low dose Siberian musk drydown. Good quality raw ingredients and arguably one of the best natural colognes you can buy. One of the best smelling fragrances I've ever smelled. Simply marvelous. So fresh and beautiful and yet with just the slightest hint of a growl from the natural musk which is blended in such a way that this shouldn't be offensive to anyone who isn't a musk fan. But, maybe I'm wrong in that assertion, as I am a musk fan, but this is worth at least a sample for those who don't normally care for natural musk fragrances. As mentioned, the citrus and floral notes are magical and blended so well that I honestly don't know how Dmitry Bortinikoff could have done it any better. My only nit pick is I'd like just a bit better longevity, but this is a cologne, so I can almost understand...but I love it so much I just want it to last forever. I'd wear it for a week straight if it would last that long...LOL. Seriously though, MC is a masterpiece in my book. Bravo, Dmitry Bortnokoff!

I like it more than it's other brother Musk Khabib, which I find too floral & very high on Ylang Ylang. Besides with the current formulation, Musk Khabib is extremely weak, Musk Cologne is better. Yes it has real deer musk (Siberian deer musk) in the base. I learnt the musk extraction is done ethically & Russia being one of the few countries where it's possible. Apparently in Nepal, deer musk extraction without killing a deer, is being taught in an academic course. Would love to know more about that. Anyways the opening somehow reminds me of scented erasers of school days, in a good way, but soon changes to a very comforting natural musk. It's not at all animalic. this is an amazing mix of citrus, white florals, musk and sandalwood; it really REALLY works well. there are traces of air freshener about it, which could be seen as a negative for some, but it's an 'elevated' air freshener, if you will. the indole is present, noticeable, but at the same time it does NOT interrupt the scent anywhere near as much as it could. it's a noticeable component, but it's not overbearing, it's just there. this has been mixed amazingly well, AMAZINGLY well, definitely warrants a try. i don't know if this is really my thing, but MAN, it smells nice...

An incredibly charming scent. I couldn't stop sniffing the whole day, I was constantly drawn back to my left elbow nook, where I sprayed, and I found it utterly enchanting. I reviewed this scent maybe 4 or 5 years ago, and my sentiments on it haven't shifted since -- it's done really REALLY well, but it's just not something I would ever want to wear. This is one of the most palatable musk scents I've ever come across, it's mild and inoffensive, and I would recommend this UNRESERVEDLY to anyone who loves their musk...

A jaw-dropping blend of white/yellow florals, citrus and natural musk that is in PERFECT harmony with itself -- everything is just balanced and levelled PERFECTLY -- I canNOT find ANY fault with it WHATSOEVER -- I just don't go for scents like this! If I did, I'd own it and I would sign its praises EVEN MORE -- but as it stands, I will only wear my sample sparingly... This is a stunning scent, truly it is -- I JUST don't wear stuff like this -- but I recommend this wholeheartedly.

Goony Goo Goo ! this juice is exceptional, bright at the top, mellow and airy in the middle and the musk blend with all the notes beautifully, I bought a decant, but once I sprayed it on skin, had to buy a whole bottle of this signature worthy fragrance, of all the musk related fragrances I own, musk cologne has the best dry down, in my opinion, performance wise it's O.K. I like it for its complexity, that's the main reason I love this fragrance.

This fragrance initially reminds me of the lightness and freshness of the cheap colognes I used to buy during family holidays in Spain when I was a teenager, but the citruses quickly entangle in something far more complex and deep, with beautiful flowers, on an inviting bed of wood and animalics. Strangely enough, I continue to get a beer note, but it's not negative, since beer belongs on a holiday in Spain. I could definitely wear this...

At first spray I was like “nope”, but that was very brief. The opening is a dirty, animalic musk — almost musty in fact — I really, really hated it. However that only lasted for about 60 seconds before it takes a big turn.... it blooms into a sweet, juicy, realistic tangerine with subdued white florals and a soft unchallenging musk — it’s very aromatic. Detest the opening, love the dry down.

Sweet orange, green tea, neroli, vanilla sweetness and the powdery warmth of deer musk. A gorgeous concoction. Freshie with depth yet an airy lightness to it. Not some sort of powerhouse fragrance but rather a calm, elegant and addictive citrus-based scent. I've tried various batches and this new one holds its own against even the wooden cap OG.

The summery citrusy and soft cousin of Musk Khabib. The fragrance has a similar deer musk and ylang-ylang combination but with prominent citrus notes making it softer and fresher. In addition, the spices were removed and the ambergris note was replaced by a soft creamy sandalwood note. My only problem with this fragrance is the weak performance.
