Newport

I have the aftershave version. It is a really clean aquatic, lavender, and blue scent thats mentholated, with a musky drydown. Caswell-Massey has this quality about them even now, which is why many U.S. Presidents used it.

Sampling Caswell-Massey Newport Cologne, part of the brand’s relaunch in 2017, a very fresh, agreeable blend that artfully blends a tingly geranium and lavender with mandarin, balsam, and cedarwood, subtle but interesting, definitely an easy everyday wear that blends classic concepts and modern sensibilities, mostly fresh but sharp enough to cut through cooler weather—head-turning, but in a positive way. I quite like this overall, and though I’m not sure I love it, I’m inclined to nab a bottle or at least a travel size. A great deployment of a sharp, tingly offering that isn’t excessive in any one aquatic, woody, or floral respect. Retail pricing, similar to most of the house’s colognes, is $80/30 for 88/7.5ml, not especially cheap for the travel size but reasonable for the full bottle size. It’s sold on the house website as well as a few other points of sale, including some discounters. 7 out of 10

As a disclaimer, let me say that I've never tried the original Newport, so in no way am I writing this out of anger at reformulation...it sounds like it must have been pretty different! The new Newport smells like every free sample vial I've ever gotten from every e-tailer in my life...i.e. Exceptional Because You Are, Perry Ellis America, those types of things. A fresh citrus aquatic at first that goes greener and muskier for a while, then dries down spicy and woody. Cheap-smelling at all stages, and feeling to me like it's trying to cover all the categories in one blend and failing miserably. Longevity is medium-short, though it's not actually that weak while it's still going. It's very hard for me to remember more details about how it smells because it changes so much, and all the stages are generic.

Newport is a fresh green lavender fragrance. Nothing ground breaking but very classic. I wish more men that like fresh aquatic scents would wear this scent profile instead. This is fresh aquatic scent but nothing fake or chemical. Just clean refreshing green notes, citruses, lots of lemon, and a fresh floral approach w/ lavender and geranium. Clean cedar and a slight vanilla in the base keep the lavender from overpowering the composition. This is a fragrance for a classy gentleman who is a no nonsense type of guy, he gets things done and carries himself w/ confidence and style. I would describe this fragrance as Bracing, crisp, clean, and classic. Year round but especially spring, summer.

Love this scent. Haven't tried it as an outside-the-house fragrance yet, but often will spray it on before going to bed, as it helps me relax. It smells very clean, as you might expect, coming from a soap house. Uplifting and light fragrance.

I have a pack of the original Newport bath soap as well as the reformulated version in cologne. They are completely different, and I like both, but I don't understand why people always have to speak negatively about reformulations. The "new" Newport is bright, fresh, aquatic, musky, and clean. A typical modern "blue" scent, but a very nice one at a good price point. Who cares if it smells like many others? It is what it is. The original is a powdery barbershop scent with a deep "brown" undertone. It has a lot in common with Caswell Massey's Jockey Club. It is distinctly old fashioned. Caswell Massey almost went under completely in 2011. They had to jettison a lot of their lines. At least Newport is still around in some form. It just smells like the ocean now instead of "the beach".

Having been born and raised here, we had to try it when it came out. It was nice, fresh and citrusy, slightly complex but not like Newport's vibe and not sea-breezey. My Mom wore it, my dad felt it was too 'pretty' and delicate on him. It's a good sort of quick morning spritz on a temperate late spring, early summer day.
