RÒS

Caswell Massey’s RÒS is pure class and sophistication, and is a high quality product from a historic American house (1752). A waitress complimented me asking if it was Chanel. I doubt she meant it smells like a specific Chanel (or at least none came to mind), more likely she thought it smells similar in quality to Chanel. RÒS is unisex with strong sillage, carrying a dominant note of rose throughout but not an overly sweet rose. This rose is rugged, giving a masculine-leaning vibe. It’s rounded nicely with spiciness, and in the dry down there is a faint hint of tobacco (not a listed note). The spiciness and tobacco provide complexity. Caswell Massey uses descriptors such as “dark and mysterious” and categorizes RÒS as “FLORIENTAL SPICY” — all very accurate. This is best suited for colder weather. I picture a confident man or woman wearing this fragrance, perhaps a clean cut person (for men, think dark blue suit and tie, e.g. President Emmanuel Macron). Score: 9 out of 10 Would I purchase a replacement bottle? Yes, but I’m also really liking La Douleur Exquise by Les Abstraits, another masculine rose, both are excellent winter fragrances.

A very pleasant, mature fragrance. Opens with a light bergamot which on my skin disappears nearly immediately. It then moves into a stunning rose—sweetened by anise, but kept comfortably masculine by the presence of black pepper and tobacco in the back. Sweet is really the word I would emphasize here. This is a jammier rose, and I would be lying if I told you this didn't take any time to appreciate as someone who generally strays from sweeter fragrances. Once I got it though, I got it: this is for someone who's cool and classy, calm and collected—maybe a little mysterious. An overall gentleman. I would say this is primarily for more formal occasions, but I think you can get away with dressing it down if you're the right type of guy. If you think yourself a classy man and love rose, then you will certainly enjoy this.

A deep, rich, spicy, liqueur oud rose reminiscent of Estée Lauder Amber Mystique. Intoxicating, deep red, best for fall or winter.

Ros is a rugged masculine rose, but not unapproachable like so many male fragrances are now a days. The rose in Ros is red, like the red rose in a dandy man's suit lapel. That rose is surrounded by black pepper, sweet anis, cloaked in cognac, and fine tobacco. This is a fragrance for a man of class, he is distinguished, dapper, sophisticated, witty and oh so charming. Ros is a reinvented classic, reinvented for the 21st century. Updated, toned down and polished. I could see JFK liking Ros and wearing it. This is class all the way. I hope more men check out Caswell and Massey they have some great offerings for men and women. They are polished, classy, and natural smelling. Edit: 4/28/22 My husband wore this yesterday and still smelled like it when he woke up this morning. He is enjoying his mini and I think I will buy him a full size as a birthday gift. He really loves it. Guys if you like roses and want a masculine rose fragrance that smells classy and elegant give Ros a try.

RÒS is a step up from Beatrix, but they've pushed themselves out a bit when they call it exotic on the packaging. The citrus top notes don't stay around long, and the rose heart notes and the spices come on nicely. I really don't smell amber, but amber is big right now so they could well have added it and told you so you'd be more interested in buying it. It's a good rose fragrance anyway. I bought the smaller bottle since there are so few Caswell Massey stores even in big cities I couldn't smell it before buying. I was concerned because Caswell Massey has produced some real stinkers over the years, but I need not have worried about this one.

I really do enjoy this fragrance. It smells like a real rose from a botanical garden. Supporting the scent is enough to make the scent fairly unisex. Any sophisticated/cultured man could sport this with ease, any woman should be able to wear it easily. Its clean and fresh with just enough greenness. I would add some sandalwood or a bit of filth of the base, but you risk losing that "realistic" quality it portrays. Performance on skin is decent. Expect 4-6 hours of decent projection. 6-8 hours of skin scent. On clothes it will last prominently for several days. At MSRP, the fragrance itself is relatively well-priced.

A really nice, balanced rose-centered fragrance, comfortably unisex but leans masculine. The rose never strays into cloying sweetness, it has a ruggedly cool vibe with a pleasant understated spice in the base. All-season appropriate, but more of daytime fragrance.

A fragrant spicy rose which, to me, smells like patchouli rose. If you collect Rose scents the small bottle is an inexpensive pickup.

The anise/basil/tomato leaf note is out of place and quite ruinous to this fragrance IMO. I'd reformulate and replace these strange notes with apple and stone fruit and add s touch of tea and perhaps some soap to make it a formidable rose perfume.

With a staggering quality that came as quite a shock to me, as I had my unfair presumptions about Caswell Massey as a stodgy, stiff upper-lipped brand with what I expected to have so-so scents, I was quite mistaken, at least with this wonderful introduction. RÒS a more rugged rose, rose with dirt and black pepper, a melange of spices and even a shade of what seems to be tobacco in the background. The sweeter qualities of rose are certainly dialed down, and there is very little dew and light in this bloom, it isn't quite gothic, but maybe it listens to Joy Division and smokes clove cigarettes, reads Camus, you know, just a of a tale from the dark side, but not full on morose. The amber in the drydown is rich with unctuous labdanum mostly, very little vanillic quality, which is fine by me. It really lingers on the skin in the most pleasant manner. For those who are concerned, this is quite a masculine rose, and any man (or any individual for that matter) who wants to project that vibe can wear with aplomb.
