No 88 Cologne

A rather unique masculine leaning fragrance. It opens up rather medicinal, almost tonic like (the heavy medicinal type not the fizzy/ effervescent type). It blends a mix of dried potpourri, which you used to find in a lot of mature homes in Britain, or a British garden in late summer/ early Autumn. There's an almost sour feel to the mid, on skin, with the base notes being very dry earthy/woody. I found this interesting, as it conjured images of a sorcerer or the Apothecary in Haworth Yorkshire. I get colours of dark purple, black, with an almost gothic church vibe, hinting almost at incense without actually smelling like it. It's a bold scent, about as far away from the bubblegum F'boy designers flying off the shelves in department stores, Boots, and the like. The rose is very masculine and pastel like, rather than a sweet rose. It helps carry the floral aspects, without falling into feminine territory. With that said, I believe anyone can wear any fragrances, these are just labels. It could well be a mysterious Wicca goddess that likes to wear bold challenging scents. This is something that probably only in summer would be a bit much. I expect Autumn is the best time for it, winter just as good, early-mid spring. This scent has lift and lingers in rooms. The silage is memorable, as the scent although perhaps a tad traditional in composition, does have a unique quality to it. This is definitely not a light and sparkly scent, it's darker, aromatic, and dry. 3-4 sprays is probably enough, maybe 6-8 if you are outside. No need to overspray it, people will know it is you. I have recently read that this was Ozzy Osbourne's signature scent, and that tracks. Gothic, Aromatic, Mature.

Despite No. 88's reputation as a "dark" scent (mostly a misconception due to its unique black bottle), No. 88 is a masterfully crafted floral-chypre with a fougere structure, that is both long-lasting and projects very well for the best part of the day. The cologne version in its current form comes across as quite powdery and packed full of geranium. The rose and woods play a supporting role here. In the more recent Eau de Parfum, the geranium and powdery notes are toned down and allow the rose and woods to come to the front much more. This is reminiscent of the vintage version and it results in a much smoother fragrance overall. Both versions have a touch of sweetness due to the frangipani. To me the cologne is a like, whereas the EdP is a love. From experience, the Cologne works well in warmer weather - the opening freshness from the bergamot and accompanying florals (geranium and rose) make for a welcome change to the traditional citrus-chypre warm weather scent. Conversely, the new Eau de Parfum works well in the cooler months due to the more pronounced woods, but either can be worn so long as they are used in sensible quantities. All in all, a unique floral-chypre fougere, centred around rose, with a classy character that is totally unisex.

Review for the EDP version: Oh my aunt is giddy! This stuff is divine, or satanic, depending on your persuasion. Not since the opening of Potion DSQUARED2 have I been bowled over by such a heady brew. You're throttled by bergamot, cinnamon smelling cassia, black locust (honeyed cherry vanilla bourbon), and what must be the strongest frangipani ever. It's like a big cherry vanilla cola that keeps on fizzing. Then there's the rose, THAT rose. So strong, so unbelievably strong, so soapy strong. This all sits on your skin pulsing away for about 3 hours before slowly melting into a deep deep floral that's held together by the gentlest and warmest of sandalwoods. At this stage the only thing I can think of that compares is Swiss Arabian Janet El Firdaus, another nuclear floral bomb. Longevity is very good. Even at 12 hours it's still there as a light skin scent. Strong sillage with just a light dusting of the neck. I've no idea what the EDT version is like but I'm sure it can't be as powerful as this. Czech & Speake No88 EDP - you have to smell it to believe it.

Very english, very unique, very sophisticated. I personally don’t get the “gothic” association. It smells like the most luxurious soap money could buy, almost dusty/chalky in the late drydown. A faint similarity to floris 89, but with a very niche/exotic twist. you will stand out from the masses with this one, no doubt. It is very rosy and very soapy, quite a bit romantic, certainly not a macho powerhouse scent although it is strong. I find it to he very wearable, in all its uniqueness, it remains inoffensive and pleasant. No specific season, daytime or age range, just dont pair it with jeans sneakers and a tshirt. Nothing fresh and sporty about this one. Btw: the comparison with eucris is beyond me. These two are night and day to me, i own and love both and i’d say they have absolutely nothing in common except for an edgy black bottle.

I don't understand how there's such a split opinion over this fragrance, it's rather straightforward and truly incredible. The rose, sandalwood, and cassia are the most significant notes that stay with you until it ends...which was 19 hours later on my skin!! I don't get anything dark about this, or vampiric. There's a similarity to Geo F. Trumper's Eucris because of the sandalwood and blackcurrant in that.

I've bought this time and time again. It has changed over the years, but it's still brilliant. I don't understand why neroli is not in the list of ingredients, as partnered with the rose, this is a dominant note. Don't overspray, because you will overwhelm everyone around you. I don't get a sense of anything dark or gothic. Instead, it's quite light, and floral, and sparkly. A real work of beauty.

K1 you wrote exactly what i think of this frag. I can just add that it is a beautiful powdery rose for the man. Traditional but uncommon at the same time. Everything to be a classic, in the good way. Very high quality ingredients, it's obvious when you smell it. My quest for the masculine rose perfume is over.

It's one of the more idiosyncratic scents - some people it is stunning on, others have something in their skin chemistry (like my partner....) that makes it smell terrible. I've never met anyone that wasn't captivated by the smell straight from the bottle though. Definitely my #1 signature scent.

This brings back something very classy from the 80s. The brazen sweet creaminess of the frangipani, the green and nostalgic notes of cassis/currant leaves and geranium, with some classic powdery combo of rose and sandalwood. A cosy vintage scent, perfect to wear on a humid warm evening.

C&S's No.88 is a classy, masculine and old world scent but retains a modern aura; suitable for both formal and casual occasions. If you enjoy earthy, dark, floral accords then you're going to love No.88

Begins abrasive and misunderstood but ends romantic and triumphant. Elwood and Jake Blues from The Blues Brothers wear this.

Hmmm strange...looking at the notes and other reviews I am wondering if I have got a mis-labeled sample. This is quite similar to Cuba but rather more masculine and 'clean' feeling. Both No 88 and Cuba feel rather boozy and have this 'shimmering' quality, it's difficult to describe what I mean by that but both fragrances seem to be constantly moving, one note nudging another one out, only for it to pop back a few minutes later. They never seem to settle into one groove, and I find that quite exciting. At the opening I do get a boozy kind of bergamot, almost like Grand Marnier, with carnation peeping through. Combined with the booziness it actually feels more like a powdery clove. The rose is there but only just, I find the vetiver quite strong here but this fragrance retains it's warmth (I sometimes find vetiver a bit cold and clinical)The frangipani is barely discernable, for me all the florals except the carnation are so discreet that it merely softens the composition. It's definately a woody fragrance, feels rather more like rich mahogany or rosewood to me for most of it's duration, the sandalwood only coming through in the drydown. I rather like it, but would I spring for a full bottle? At those prices, the jury is out...

Although has no resemblance to Old Spice, it gives me Old Spice vibes. This is a very delightful old school fresh smell. Initially I was like "Ok, an overpriced barbershop", but I was mistaken, it really does grow on you very quickly. I have a 200ml shaker version that was purchased on a very very good deal. I don't think I'd give it full price £££, I'd probably grab a Ceed for a freshie at that price. That being said it perform a lot better than most Creeds. I have this in my bathroom as opposed to my frag collection room, as I do love splashing it on after a wet shave or straight out of the shower, so for those purpose it is just great. I find it very difficult to describe, apart from it just gives a slight different take on old school barbershop. I would not say it has a modern twist to it, just simply a slight twist to traditional BS smells. I just splashed it on now and my Mrs walked in and said "Have you just sprayed that new No.88 or was that a Creed?" I asked "why" she said "I really like it"

This stuff is weird. It opens with a soapy rose which seems almost candied, but like Middle Eastern or East Asian candies that taste unmistakeably "different" from western candy. (I can understand why people say it's a masculine rose, though.) Then within a few minutes comes a deep, sharp woodiness, which feels heavy, dirty and chemical when combined with the remaining rose. It starts to become a big mess where I'm not sure I can pick out anything in particular. There's something in there similar to the old-rubber-band accord that I get from my newer Heritage decant. It just feels tacky for some reason...I think the piercing rose stays just intense enough to annoy me with its sharp pointiness. By the end, a little arid wood (cedar?) comes into the picture to cut some of the sweetness, and you're finally left with a vague incenceyness. I guess I just don't understand what the perfumer was going for, though I won't deny the quality of the ingredients. To me, it's mostly just a vase of wilting flowers.

Another juice that makes me question my belief that I don't like sweet fragrances. Revisiting it, yes, it's woody and, yes, it's aromatic, but it is also decidedly sweet, probably as a result of rose and the other florals and sandalwood that can be, let's face it, sweet in and of itself. This was another go-to favourite in the late 80s and early 90s, though I find I have grown away from it a little and now tend to use it less frequently. Despite the fresh elements in there - bergamot and vetiver- I've always preferred it in cooler weather or at night during the summer because otherwise it can become too overpowering. Seems a bit odd to have strong feelings about sillage or longevity because it really does depend on which dilution you're wearing in my experience. It references perfume-making traditions from way before 20th-century notions of gender were drilled into our brains, so forget all that "for men" nonsense: anyone can wear it if it suits.

Fresh, "manly" rose, with a good amount of geranium. It has depth thanks to the earthy vetiver, and this is noticeable even in the mid. Also, at this stage, I detect a bit of "sour skank" à la 80's. Not sure if it's the combination of elements, or something I cannot detect. It's not too noticeable, and doesn't ruin the composition imo, but some might not like it. Dry down is my favourite part. Creamy sandalwood, earthy vetiver and a bit of freshness from the geranium and rose. I tried three from the house so far(vetiver vert and neroli being the two others), and 88 is the only one I found to be OK/good. Good longevity for an EDC(6+ hours) Projection is also good for up to one hour(+/-) It's one of those scents which smells MUCH better if smelled on someone else/in the air.

Smelling this I kind of regret I am not a man- it is a great fragrance, but way too masculine to pull of as a unisex fragrance. A really great combo of rose, geranium and vetyver (I live vetyver). Hm, a possible present for my dad for Christmas this year? A type of scent that would be appropriate for both every day and an evening. Woody, aromatic, elegant, I would say very British, but it also touches something slightly more exotic that the streets of London City thanks to frangipani. A ray of sunshine on a busy street. It also changes quite a lot on the skin. It starts of quite calm, but from time to time it gets revived by the bright citrus accords. I did not detected them at first, but they definitely stay quietly in the background and revive the scent from there.

This is supposed to be a "man's" scent, but I find it completely unisex. It starts out very citrusy, presumably the bergamot, but fairly quickly changes to a rose scent boosted by citrus and geranium. I really didn't detect much of the woody notes that are supposed to be there, but the rose-geranium scent lasts all day, and is strong enough to mask them. C&S 88 is a pleasant, aromatic scent with enough complexity to be interesting, and strong enough to get me through a day at work and night out afterwards. It starts and ends like a walk through a highly scented herb garden, with a rose garden in the middle.

For my nose this is the most soapy perfume that I ever smelled! I tried to separate notes, but it was difficult for me – every time I sniffed my wrist I smelled just soap, soap and soap... It’s said perfumes evoke memories from childhood - I guess, I had most of soap bars smelling like this (I collected soap bars when I was a kid). Anyway, there is geranium mixed with woody dry base, the vetiver is very noticeable, that I like a lot. No.88 is totally unisex for me, pleasant and clean. I would like to smell it on someone else, just for curiosity to learn if I smell something else than soap.

The EdP (C&S doesn’t sell cologne samples but heard similar) was the one that got me into my fragrance journey and I had never heard of C&S before. It came up talking about an interview with Ozzy, and they all thought he smelled amazing. I think it’s a much more popular brand in Europe, already quite niche. I’ve come to appreciate it more over time. Dark florals, barbershop classic fragrance. Age 40+ Rest in Peace 🙏🏼

Really beautiful and dressy hardcore rose for men. I'm surprised incense is not in the notes because for me it's a strong deja-vu reminder of rose scented Indian incense from my childhood and how obsessed I was with it. Also some really animalistic stuff is happening at the base. Very masculine, very macho, charismatic and stylishly abrasive. Yet for me it goes into never wear again box.

Ozzy Osbourne wears it hehehe... I am thinking of Vampire when I smell this. I really enjoy it in the first 2 hours as it is very fresh roses with a touch of sour (frangipani?). Sad it turns into a soapy 'lointain' (far away) great roses it had in the first 2 hours or so. If I had not discovered Black Aoud, I would probably buy this magnifique scent. 9/10

A nice complex, sophisticated and masculine, soapy rose with geranium aura. Nice to wear when dressed up for an evening occasion and certain you will get many compliments. Not offensive in any way but refined and stimulating assuming the price point is what you are willing to pay for such a unique, classy and mysterious scent.

I personally don't see this as old fashioned or overly masculine. This is a very herbaceous aromatic fragrance with a tinge of rose. A bit incensy and Middle Eastern even. Melancholy, but confident and enduring. I'm very, very pleasantly surprised! Also kind of smells like the stage.

The mid to drydown of this smells just like the Maja soaps. Not really similar to Maja fragrance, but just like the soap.

If smelling like the back of a plastic watch after you've been wearing it for 10 years is what you like then this is for you. Extremely unique scent but not for me, sillage and longevity is moderate. Someone said this is something Dracula would wear and I agree, will definitely chase everyone out of the room.

Overpowering elements of rose and a soap-like drydown made this a bit of a headache inducing affair for me. I love the old English retro feel of the bottle design, but from my experience, the fragrances of Czech & Speake aimed at guys, come second to those of Penhaligons (sorry to any C&S fans out there).

"Reviving and uplifting"? This is like a funeral for an old man: dead flowers and old man smell.

Old. 70s/80s old. Reminds of the stuff my dad used to stink of. Not in a good way. Shame. Their bottles always looked great to me from their ads online.

It is a chilly, rainy, grey late October morning, my first of the season where I am wearing the mocassin slippers, and a cup of coffee couldn't be any more welcoming. I reached for no 88, because it just felt like the right thing to do. It sprays on deep, dark, and delicious, a dense and brooding rose with a somewhat sharp and minty geranium immediately greeting you, with bergamot just lifting it enough so that it isn't a vortex. I am enchanted right away, as a contrast of refined soapy and earthy underbelly is apparent soon afterwards, with this the distinct fragrance of black locust blossoms in full bloom, on the edge of ripeness. I have my window open to let the cool autumn air in, and no 88 really seems enhanced by this draft coming through, stirring and austere. I chose some shoegazer sounds for my music soundtrack (Slowdive, Auburn Lull), and I have sips of my coffee. This one is really a charmer, sort of an incantation. Over time, there is a dusty wistful vibe, as the sandalwood and vetiver become more pronounced, but the rose, geranium, and florals, they linger, they have not evaporated, the persistence is reassuring, with the only difference being that they have a bit more of incense-like quality, impressionistic and haunting. No. 88 is an utter delight.

THE GOTHIC ANTI-BARBERSHOP How to make the perfect anti-barbershop fragrance: (1) Don’t make it smell like soap or talc (2) Chuck in a load of florals (3) And cut the damn lavender out! Oh and stick it in the most slick blacked out bottle ever created! 88 is unique fresh spicy scent that smells like a grown ass man - refined, mature and comfortable in his own skin instead of pandering to the masses. Minty with geranium, complex with rose, smooth with sandalwood. This ain’t no people pleaser - this is a man who knows what he likes, and sticks with it! And it goes down as one of the first florals I’m truly comfortable rocking! WHAT I LEARNED: This is such a refined scent, and me, I'm messy, a little rough around the edges. An Indiana Jones wannabe! I crave adventure. Dirt. Earth... vetiver, green, woods, oud and incense. I lust after travel scenes - transport me, please!! I'd rather smell like dirt than smell of soap... this is for a guy more refined than I am but this is rock solid juice if you’re that dude! VERDICT: Sweeney Todds Signature scent! Old without being dated. Classic without being retro. Liking this a lot, a surprising amount actually. Almost perfection but not quite me!

Based on a sample I have, this is probably the most barbershop fragrance that I've ever encountered, outside of Pinaud. Quite honestly, when I first spray it, I find the intial spray to be almost identical to Pinaud. After it dries down, I do smell a bit of powder and a hint of rose or floral combination. Sillage is soft to moderate. As far as the comparison to Montale's black aoud, the only similarities I see are that they both have rose. Black Aoud is a harsh, smoky fragrance that obscures the rose throughout and there is no obscurity with this fragrance. No. 88 is a soft presentation of rose that stays that way throughout the life of the scent. There's pros and cons to me with this one and I'm less than impressed with what is supposed to be the flagship fragrance for this company. Bottom line: Pinaud aftershave that's been tweaked with a hint of rose. Pros: Traditional, barbershop, inoffensive and clean. Cons: Average scent, overpriced.

In the 80's i bought this after seeing an advert in the Arena magazine. I loved it, very manly. I remember getting a few comments, mainly good ones. I dont go in for all this opening stuff, settling down thingy and sillage or projection shit, i either like it or i dont. Scroll forward a lot of years, being 50, i opted to try some again. The wife loves it, the ladies at work in the office are divided, the younger ones really like it and say its very manly. A lady slightly older and a male colleague don't. They say it smells like damp, rotting wood or foul smelling fungi. I even had someone tell me it smells like age dried marijuana. I still like it however and find it's better during the winter months (meaning October to April in the UK). I don't think i'll buy it again, but i will enjoy it while i have some left. Score wise 7/10 Expensive compared to the far better Quorum Very British, great bottle though.

To my nose, Czech & Speake No 88 is a very woody floriental with something of a chypre feeling as well. Subtley is not one of the virtues of this perfume. Sillage is big and longevity is good, so once again I have to disagree with the categorization of this liquid as a cologne, but, hey, better to err in this direction than in the other! I guess that, when all is said and sniffed, I find 88 to be a bit heavy-handed. The vetiver seems rough and scratchy--almost harsh--here, and it must be the geranium which is contributing a kind of sharp intensity to the composition. Other fragrance community websites call this unisex, as does the card accompanying the manufacturer's sample which I am testing. As they put it: "Enjoyed by both men and women." Hmmm... not so much by this woman. Désolée.

This fragrance is beautiful, deserves to have the acknowledgment like creed, Tom Ford, roja etc I would love to see this have a revival, it is really amazing stuff! Smells unique. Hate it or love it kind of stuff. To me I get the classic 80s fougere backbone that we all remember but it does have a timeless feel to it, considering the year it was made I am surprised that this smells the way it does! A beautiful history behind it too and I think for what it’s worth it is defo a barbershop fragrance. First sniff is heaven.. no joke. I get the dark image everyone gets, especially from the bottle and it being ozzys signature scent but for me it’s a very bright spicy shaving scent. Edp and edt for me are just red grapes to sable grapes.

I bought this on the strength of a sample C&S sent me, since I was looking for a heavy, somewhat old-fashioned nighttime scent and this seemed to fit the bill. Unfortunately, for reasons very strange to me, the full bottle I now own doesn't work at all on me and actually seems to have completely different basenotes from the sample. I'm not sure what it is, but this goes full-on dried-sweat on me after just a few minutes and that never entirely goes away. I've tested it multiple times now, and every time there's that gross, stale, animalic smell under a bit of soap and rose. Very confused. I definitely won't be wearing this outside, or anywhere. A bummer, as I now have a full bottle. At least it's a pretty bottle. . .

Someone below wrote this had definite Classic Old Spice vibes, and I agree. Its different, so don't expect Old Spice, but has some vibes of it, plus the twist of the Gothic English vampire laying on a tropical beach at night. An ever so slightly more funky, and woodier, rosier, more tropical Classic Old Spice Cologne. Funk probably due to the cassia note. But still very wearable. Its a Gothic tropical rose. The frangipani note really gives it an unexpected curve toward fruity tropical. Think English vampire sitting on a tropical beach AT NIGHT under a full moon (of course), sipping some fruity tropical drink with his bride next to him, red rose clenched in her teeth. I like this. Now need a full bottle.

For a rose & incense scent, their is nothing out there that can beat this fragrance. I have used this since the early 90's. Some people claim that this is hard to wear. I think it is easy to wear as long as it is colder weather. You can wear it at the office, but I would prefer to wear it at the weekends or in the evening when having a few drinks at the golf club with friends. You will not find many people wearing this as it is not easy to get your hands on if you live in the USA. I would recommend this fragrance to anyone who like Interlude man by Amouage, although they are not similar in any way, except for the fact that they each have incense in the formulation and they are both extremely lovable.

Another of my favourites but I'm not sure how to describe it as I don't own it currently, so I'm going off memory. It's a really nice fragrance and thinking back it reminds me of a type of expensive incense. It lasts much better on me than Oxford and Cambridge. It's musky,slightly floral and woody. The rose is more of a green rose if you will. It is really unique. When I first smelt it the word that came to mind was BESPOKE. Can't think of anything that smells like it. One thing you can rely on from C&S is the presentation of their products is exquisite (I own their shaving soap bowls and they are beautiful) and the EDT bottles are no exception. Great juice. Highly recommended.

This afternoon, I re-tested this scent from an old sample that I had from Czech & Speake. This is a classic rose scent through and through. The opening is very floral and dominated by rose and a little bit of geranium. After a few minutes it settles to a more balanced scent that is again dominated by rose and supported by a woody base around sandalwood. I love rose as a flower but I'm not a fan of rose as a note in men's fragrances. Although, I enjoy the smell, I don't like it for myself. This said, I consider No 88 a very well done rose scent from the 80s. Today, I think this can make a suitable choice for a senior gentleman to dress up. Longevity and projection are good.

This review is of the vintage Forester formulation of No. 88. Czech and Speake No. 88, in the vintage formula, is a breathtakingly gorgeous masculine rose. It is flanked by frankincense and what smells like a long-lasting neroli. It's dark, gothic, and nearly morbid, yet warm and inviting in every way. If you're a fan of dark smells or black metal, you need to try this. This is, of course, gauging the vintage formula. I've heard the new stuff is a little lighter and brighter, so I'll update this review when I try the new one!

For me this is one of the most difficult and hard to explain cologne. But I try. To me it's like a 18th century balsamic honey candy on an old beautiful massive dark mahogany woody shelf. And I can feel a little pine needle and maybe some strange ?cinnamon/incense?. Almost like being in a church eating a honey candy. Anyway a very like for me as I tend to prefer that barbershoppy vibe when it comes to that kind of scents. Very happy with it. And if a woman could rock this, she would be veeeery attractive in my opinion....

This review is based on their sample. I get rose otto and sandalwood mostly. Reminds me of Hammam Bouquet by Penhaligon's without the musk. Marketed for men but I feel it's more unisex. Definitely not feminine. A confident man can easily pull this off. For an EdC, this one has better projection than most other in the line. It has moderate projection and good longevity on my skin. I'm actually quite enjoying this one more than Hammam Bouquet. I can see why it's their flagship scent. It's elegantly English!

Creates a scent bubble of decaying flowers (not like potpourri, like dead rotting roses) but up close it's really beautiful. Hard to describe this one. Sometimes I smell earth and rose and renewal (? I didn't know that was a smell either), sometimes it's alive with spice and rose, and sometimes it's cold suffocating rot. I like it, it's mad interesting. Just don't be a jerk like me and try it out at work. Not everyone's cup of tea, and better as an intimate smell in my unlearned opinion.

I initially didn't like it because it is indeed strong and very dark🕷...but then I loved it! 🌟It is very unique and has a very masculine rose🥀 note. As a cologne it has excellent longevity. It is initially a bit strong but it develops into a very sophisticated and amazing scent. A great signature scent particularly good in the winter months. It has indeed some Count Dracula feel 🧛♂️ so it is not a crowd pleasing or for everyone. 10/10

I can see why Ozzy wore this one. It is like an older English gent stepped into a barber shop. While I am not into the rose/geranium floral notes and it does also give off a strange shaving cream/musk vibe, I do enjoy the sandalwood and the vetiver. Not for me, but I'm really glad I got to try it. RIP Ozzy.

I love this scent so much, I just wish it had more longevity. Both my husband and I wear it, especially in the summer here in the U.K. . I adore the geranium notes in this fragrance and the blend of woods and herbs too. I always get compliments when I wear this one, from both sexes.

Scent - rose, lime, geranium & sandalwood. Season/Time of Day - I prefer to use this one in the warmer months, during the day. Projection - I didn't get noticed, I didn't get a compliment. Longevity - I get 8hrs consistently.
