Lost Americana

This perfume makes me sing "diddly diddly dee, dee dee dee" whilst jumping up and clicking my heels together, like an enthusiastic, ecstatic chimney sweep out of Mary Poppins. What a surprisingly wonderful perfume Lost Americana is! Fuck me! I was not expecting this to be so frigging excellent - it was a total blind buy after reading positive reviews on here, and thinking that the title of it was quite interesting. I found the perfume brand new on Debanebanebanams' website for a meagre £21!!! I have absolutely no idea who the (c)rapper is that has put their name to it; seeing "signed" versions of it going for big £££s on eBay had absolutely no effect on my desire to give it a whirl. If you are a fan of that (c)rapper (because everyone knows that the word "rap" is spelt with a silent "c" at the front) then you could have been disappointed by it's lack of edgy-ness, but as someone who purely hunts for good scents, Lost Americana is timeless and absolutely beautiful. It smells complete, bold, fresh, vibrant, and familiar all at the same time. Not many perfumes are able to do that. Lost Americana has replaced Notes Jazz as my go-to fragrance, that I wear when I don't know how I want to smell. It has so many interesting components, that make it suit any mood of mine, and I feel it can be worn at any time of day, in any season. It is safe to say that I am head over heels in love with this fragrance. It can do no wrong in my eyes. 10/10. Fucking yes please!

Dossier was one of the first brands I got myself when I first started my journey into collecting.. now I was gifted colognes here and there but when I started my own journey dossier was one of the first brands I bought (minus dior sauvage haha) but this is one of the best dossier sense in my opinion.. it has everything you could want phenomenal smell... longevity is excellent 10 plus hours...you radiate with this one but in the best way possible... Not cloying just a beautiful fragrance all around...mgk and dossier should be proud .!! Also if you're looking for other dossiers to try I recommend Amber cherry(lost cherry inspired by) ambery saffron (bacarat rouge 540 inspired by)( also layer them together...thank me later!) Musky oakmoss is a personal fav of mine! Blind buy safe if the notes resinate with you And even if they don't I don't think you will be disappointed

I’m not a huge fan of MGK, I like his older music than most of his newer stuff, but I saw his ad for this and my curiosity was instantly peaked, especially by the note breakdown. I’ve had the fragrance for over a month now, so it has had time to macerate, although scent profile hasn’t changed all that much, it has just gotten stronger and longer lasting. It’s a definite easy grab for me, it’s a winter/cool weather heavy fragrance. I’d even say a good night out fragrance due to its uniqueness. It’s a very beautiful warm and spicy fragrance, with a good amount of nutmeg, almond and cinnamon. Slightly gourmand but not fully. Chocolate and vanilla is there, but not overpowering to me. It’s a hard to describe for me, but I think it’s sensational. Overall: 8/10 Longevity: 8/10 Silage: 7/10

On my skin I get an initial burst of sweet, chocolatey, spicy pipe tobacco. It's the perfect blend of sweet tobacco to me--not an ashtray and not cloyingly sweet. After a few minutes the smoky incense rolls in. This is why I feel it leans masculine, but could still be worn by anyone. Can't comment on longevity as I just got it but I notice that I keep circling back to smell it, and it seems like a solid performer. Seems like MGK is polarizing but don't let his name being attached scare you away if your opinion of him is negative. I feel this will be in heavy rotation for me this fall & winter, amd possibly into the spring.

It cracks me up that this is apparently connected to MGK. I had no idea until reading reviews and then looking closer at pictures of the full-size bottle. If I had known that before, I might not have purchased this just because I have a poor impression of this particular celebrity and I wouldn't really want to smell like him. All that said, this is a lovely scent! Someone below nailed it with "cigar box". It' chocolate-y leather and incense, but pretty, sweet, and soft. This is a more polite, understated version of a scent profile I'm frequently drawn to.

I blind bought this and it turned out to be the best $50 I spent on a fragrance! It's definitely earthy as it claims to me, but the presence of incense, sweet/spicy/richness, and chocolate is definitely saying "Here I am!". I think this is a bit more masculine than unisex, and would definitely be more of a fall/winter fragrance, but honestly I'm going to wear this all year round. This will also be my "daily wear" fragrance, and it has great projection and longevity. I love this cologne, great job Dossier & MGK!

One of the most unexpected scents I’ve ever smelled. It smells expensive. It smells full. Layered. Not sure what I expected, but I smelled it on a friend and was stopped in my tracks. Hard to describe but almost smells like a cigar box left in a bakery that had roaring fire going. It’s almost creamy. Layered smoke with incense and a sweetness. I’ve never been complimented so much. Everyone asks questions. No one believes it’s a dossier. Or MGK.

A very beautiful perfume! I’m a big fan of MGK and collecting perfumes is my little hobby. That’s why when I heard that MGK was launching his own perfume it was a done deal! To be honest I didn’t have any expectations, just wanted to have it for a sake of having it. But let me tell you: it’s gorgeous! I’d say more masculine than feminine though. The longevity is extraordinary, I smelled it on my clothes for 3 days! Love love love it!

This was a blind buy for me based on the fragrance notes. I'm not an MGK fan, but I know what I like and all of the notes hit for me. I LOVE IT. This is going to be in heavy rotation for winter/spring. It has great longevity and I can't help but to keep smelling my wrist when I have it on. I think I actually like this better than Fulton & Roark's Calle Oche which held a top spot for me.

Nothing like Layton or the numerous other fragrances people below mentioned because they have a vanilla or patchouli note. This is unique and pretty good. For the price it's an easy win.

It has good longevity (8-10 hours for me on moisturized skin) and moderate sillage. It's definitely unisex, which is what I prefer in fragrances. As for the notes -- the incense top note calms down and is joined by the vanilla, earthy chocolate, and all the spices within an hour of wear. I personally never detect the patchouli, but I could just be confusing it in the other spices because I always expect patchouli to smell exactly like a new-age crystal shop, but it doesn't always. The suede is detectable, but only in the sense that it smells like you're wearing an oriental-spicy fragrance while standing next to your friend who's wearing a suede jacket. After wearing it for a few days, my only sticking point -- which may or may not be of interest to anyone reading this review -- is the marketing of this fragrance as "Lost Americana" despite it containing several spice and incense notes, which are essential characteristics of Arab and other non-American fragrance traditions. At the very least, the name and the scent are incongruous. Original review on Dossier: The most prominent top note is the incense, followed closely by the spices and earthy chocolate. This is NOT a gourmand chocolate! This scent is firmly in the earthy-spicy realm. The suede is there, but it blends well, and I barely detect the patchouli or the vetiver. I find it ironic that this fragrance was created with MGK and marketed as Lost Americana, because its incense-forward spicy notes are incredibly reminiscent of my Arabian fragrances. Lattafa Khaltaat is essentially this scent with fruits and musk added. If I were redesigning this scent, I'd take out the incense top note and add a smoky whiskey note. That, to me, evokes "Americana." The incense note in addition to the spices puts this scent in a much more cosmopolitan realm.

I was walking through the Queens Center Mall where Dossier recently opened a store. They had a big window display for this fragrance and a little cut out where you could put your hand to get a little automated spritz of the fragrance. I sprayed my hand and walked around the mall for about an hour. At first, the fragrance was nice but I wasn't immediately in love with it. Over the next hour though, I couldn't stop smelling my hand. I eventually walked back and bought a bottle. I'm wearing it today and do not at all regret my decision. This is going to sound a little weird, but on my skin the fragrance produces a really nice cigarette accord. Not cigarette smoke, but the sweet smell of cigarette tobacco you get when you open a new pack of cigs. I've never smoked, but many family members did when I was growing up so this smell is very nostalgic for me. I also think it is objectively a pleasant one. Given that MGK apparently creatively directed this fragrance and his jacket on the cover of the album with the same name mirrors the design of the Marlboro logo, I can't help but to wonder if this accord was intentional... Either way, I personally like this scent a lot and I suspect that a lot of others will as well. That being said, I don't think it's an entirely safe blind buy. It's close, but it's unique enough that it does come off as a tad bit challenging compared to most mass appealing fragrances that Dossier produces. If you have the opportunity, give it a try. I think it's worth it. EDIT: I was just at the Diptyque store and smells Eau Nabati for the first time. I really liked it so I popped the tester strip in my pocket. An hour later, I smell it and the dry down smells super familiar. After a few more sniffs, it hit me: Lost Americana! The notes of each scent are very different, but the dry downs are definitely in the same world, at least the way I smell them.

I blind bought this because of all the good reviews. It smells great. The projection is pretty strong and longevity is decent, I get around 4-5 hours. However, I don’t LOVE it. The vanilla and chocolate notes are a bit too much for me, I personally don’t like sweet scents. My girlfriend said it smells good, but I just smell like a candle. I totally agree, the scent is very good but it’s just not complex at all.

This smells to me like layton in the opening but at the drydown it smells like black phantom but sweeter (maybe because of the chocolate) but overall I don’t think it is a clone of something specific. It’s great for the price and the performance is ok, got it for 17 dollars so cannot complain.

Don’t know much about MGK apart from him being connected to Megan Fox so definitely didn’t purchase due to his affiliation. The smell is interesting and I must admit I cannot discern particular notes in the composition really. However, I think it might be the chocolate that’s giving it a sickliness for me. It seems more of a ‘milky’ chocolate than say a dark earthy one and I think it’s the milkiness which is turning me off perhaps. Possibly also amped up by the vanilla? This is just under £40 here in the U.K. and for me this is overpriced for what this is. Unlike many people, I’m not experiencing good longevity or sillage at all. Gone in an hour! You’d get far more bang for your buck from an Arabian frag for half the price! However, Dossier is vegan and cruelty free which influenced my purchase. I’d give it 6/10 and wouldn’t repurchase.

So, I really like a lot of Dossier scents. I don't like MGK as a public person; I have no idea what his music sounds like. But, this is very strong and almost overwhelming with the pink pepper, which (at least on me) overpowers everything. It is almost causing coughing. It's also very boozy and sweet. As for undertones, there's definitely a rabbit litterbox in there. As someone who had rabbits as animal companions for years, there's no mistaking that scent. Also, the incense, which in general I tend to like. So, hmmmmmpppphhhhh. Will I wear it again....I tend to marinate in scents as I work at home, so yes, but only when I am in a particular mood and not too often.

When I smelled it, I immediately knew what it reminded me of. It smells exactly like cigar boxes. I think this can be a very distinguished smell- to me it gives "grandparents house". I don't think I'll wear it, BUT it will smell nice on my furniture in my 1950s home.

This smells exactly like bag balm ointment

This is pretty nice, not sure it's bottle worthy for me. This reminds me quite a bit of Khadlaj Karus Oud Fire which is something of a hybrid between Carlisle and Black Phantom (which corroborates some of the suggested similar scents on here). LA is a softer approach to the scent profile. For me it's a bit like spiced caramelised red apple with warm melted white chocolate, whereas OF is more like spiced caramelised red apple with mocha. LA is more unisex and has the components to come off more masculine or more feminine depending on the wearer. OF is much more masculine leaning. Both are really well done scents and worth checking out as I can see them being loved by some. For me they are likes and worth having access to decants in a bigger collection to try now and again.

Adding to my previous review where I said it smells like a handsome man who holds the door open for strangers, I still feel that way every time I smell it. That said, I have to mention that as someone who comes from a Muslim family, this fragrance smells incredibly similar to some attar oils.
