YOU ARE MY SISTER AND I LOVE YOU

I love a leafy, stemmy, bright Rosalva kinda rose, aldehydic, tart-berry-sweet and watery. The kind I adore in the classic Perfumer's Workshop Tea Rose and Jo Malone Red Roses. Here, James Elliott brings this same theatric, pull-the-heartstring rose and sends it to a tender place, highlighted pastel and softened with broad strokes. This doesn't reinvent the rose in perfume, but one could argue this is now next to impossible. It is a beautiful rose, though, much closer to an earnest rose perfume than I encounter in these not so earnest times. I really do enjoy it and I am impressed with its execution. The sentiment behind it is what makes it most meaningful, and adds so much more meaning to an already beautiful creation.

In a recent basenotes profile, James mentioned that this perfume makes people misty-eyed, which made me laugh because it's 100% true of me and I guess no human experience is unique! (That's a positive.) Nostalgia for something that didn't even happen to you is hard to bottle. It's sentimental, pure, simple, powdery and just...good. I love it. I think rose scents often hold this "memory of a flower" feeling for me but this one really takes the cake. Just an excellent example of what artful simplicity in indie/niche perfuming can be.

You are my sister and I love you smells to me like a photorealistic citrusy rose. It reminds me of my own very special memories of being at the rose garden with my mom in the spring. It made me want to cry upon smelling it. Beautiful. Can’t wait to buy a full bottle.

salty, sticky and bodily, a tragic and dramatic fragrance. smells like the roses on candy darling's deathbed
