Socotra I absolutely love this fragrance. There are many reasons for this but there is one that stands out among all the others. The Dragon's Blood Resin is unlike any note I have ever encountered. After doing a bit of research I have discovered just how wide-ranging its range of sub notes it contains: Woody and balsamic – Similar to frankincense or myrrh Sweet and resinous – A bit like vanilla or amber Earthy and smoky – With a deep, grounding scent. To me, this range makes this note not just the heart of the fragrance but also one of Holy Grail level notes. And just as the search for the Holy Grail entailed exploring the world for this sacred item, Dragon’s Blood exists in a one of the most unique locations on planet earth. Socotra, is a Yemini Island located in the Indian Ocean. Socotra is home to a high number of unique species. Up to a third of its plant life is unique. Due to the island's unusual geography, it has been described as "the most alien-looking place on Earth". In 2008, Socotra was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This fragrance, like the island, is a world of its own. It is masterfully well-blended with many rare notes that are sourced from the island. Everything about this fragrance has been given the greatest care. Let me start with the basics- the packaging and the bottle itself. Nestled in dark green flock the fragrance at first appears very dark. But once it is removed its dark red fragrance comes to life. It looks like Dragon Blood should look. The calligraphy on the bottle also adds to it Middle Eastern vibe. Every note in this fragrance is sourced from the Island. These include: Red Hojari Frankincense, Olibanum, and Malaysian Oud. Each of these notes are quite rare and each can be detected. I especially love the Malaysian Oud as I am a huge fan of Oud in fragrances. This particular oud is both strong and yet not at all domineering. It is a smooth oud if I had to describe it in two words. Frankincense is often a part of fragrances that wish to invoke a sacred note be it a church or a mosque. This adds to this fragrance’s mystery and depth. Rajesh has managed to incorporate the sacred with the mythic in a way I have yet to detect in any other fragrance. Olibanum is Incense-like, dry and meditative but also spicy and piney. In other words, there is green element that is an invaluable addition to the overall effect of this fragrance. I would rate this as one of the top 10 of all the many fragrances I own. It is very limited in the number of bottles made so if you want to get a bottle go to lucky scent where only a very few bottles are left. Anyone who purchases this fragrance will know they have one of the rarest gems in the perfume world.

When I smell this, my mind goes to a review that Luca Turin wrote for Delphine Thierry’s Castaña in his book, Perfumes: The Guide, where he describes her composition as "a lanky Art Déco wraith of a fragrance.” That’s what I get when I smell Socotra, although perhaps minus the “Art Déco” modifier. This is wraith-like, though, in the sense that it carries deep emotional resonance, but it’s also transparent, cloaking the wearer in a paradoxical veil of cool smoke. It is subtle enough to wear beautifully in a variety of climates, so I’d advise potential buyers not to worry that this will sit too heavily on the skin or come off as overly dense or syrupy. This is natural perfumery executed with experience and sophistication– it’s a scent all about finesse. Those familiar with the flagship dragon’s blood accord employed in so many of Black Pheonix Alchemy Lab’s oils will immediately discern a leap in quality along with an equally discernable decrease in raw tenacity when it comes to the dragon’s blood resin used here. I think some who have encountered that accord before might expect this to really shout for attention, but this does not do that. This is meditative, grounding, balanced, and not the least bit overwhelming. It wears close to the skin for the most part, but its longevity is excellent, especially for a natural composition. I think it’s very much a scent that you wear more for yourself than for the attention of those around you. A fantastic scent for those in the market for a gentle, resinous, and singularly unique wearing experience and a vivid olfactory profile of an equally unique location. One of the best experiences in armchair tourism I’ve had in quite some time.

Socotra by Hunayn in Collaboration with Dr Rajesh Balakrishnan : A Fragrance of Unparalleled Complexity Socotra, named after Yemen's dragon blood tree, is a fragrance that beautifully captures the essence of this ancient land. Its sweet, woody, spicy, and incense-laden aroma is a journey full of surprises that's filled with fun. The bottle itself is stunning, with a deep red color that hints at the complex blend inside. Socotra opens up with a fresh, minty vibe that quickly gives way to a spicy heart. The combination of civet and chilli seed notes is truly unique and enticing. After a while, the cinnamon note adds little cozy, little sweet and little spicy nip, but just when you think it's all about the spice, Socotra reveals a rich, animalic leather accord. Socotra keeps bringing something new to the table that it's hard to ignore and it's structure is very unique and even hard core fragrance enthusiasts would find it appealing. I love how the cedarwood adds a comforting, camphorous quality, balanced by the piney freshness of the Oud. But as a tobacco note lover the drydown is the most interesting part for me personally, where a rich, smoky tobacco note emerges. This is tobacco at its best – full-bodied, drier and little complex. Socotra lasts all day (around 8-9 hours) and leaves a noticeable trail. Socotra would appeal to everyone who loves to smell good. IG-loveforfragrance

This fragrance is undeniably incensy, balsamic, and resinous — and absolutely captivating. It makes me smile the moment it touches my skin. Socotea feels like a portal, transporting me to past lives in the Middle East — among sultans, spice markets, and the most exquisite oils ever crafted. It’s as if the ingredients are not just scents, but memories — remembered by something deep in the soul. What an extraordinary olfactory experience. It reminded me why ingredients like frankincense and oud have been used for centuries in sacred rituals — they truly shift something internally. This isn’t just a perfume; it affects inner states, at least for me. While Socotea feels like a flying carpet to the deepest emotions and the unknown beyond, it also smells awsome for everyday use, in my opinion. Wearable art. After 15 minutes, it settles into the skin with such calm beauty and continues to glow for hours. This kind of creation is why perfume matters. It’s why fragrance is more than just scent — it’s soulcraft. And honestly, this is the kind of perfume that makes collecting feel like a meaningful hobby, not just an indulgence. A huge love from me!

What a beautiful journey! Smokey resinous and animalistic. I have never heard of this island, and what a beautiful way of imagining being there. Close your eyes and imagine sitting under this Dragon blood tree that has its red sap oozing from the trunk. Dry spiritual incense surround by smokey oud burning in the near distance. The civet in the background brings this all together. Incredible artistry! Meditative and necessarily perfume for the fragrance connoisseur. Socotra is truly amazing. As my first purchase from Hunayn, I’m thoroughly impressed. Although I’m familiar with dragon’s blood, this fragrance presents it in a unique way. It instantly transports you to a mystical place with a foreign landscape and incense-filled air. I find it leans slightly towards the masculine side of unisex, but it’s suitable for anyone. Definitely worth trying, and I’m especially looking forward to wearing it during colder weather.

Hunayn is a relatively new indiehouse from the UK.Their line is filled with quality materials and highly valued. Scocotra is a masterwork btw.Dr.Rajesh and Huayn.Inspired by the Yemeni culture this fragrance kicks off in a olfactory journey carried by dragonblood, deep resins, ambergris, civet and so many more ingrediens. A truly amazing creation.

One of the most intoxicating fragrances within my collection. I find with each wear I fall deeper and deeper in love! I am no stranger to Raj’s work! My journey began with Sleepy Hollow and brought me to Socotra! This is a true masterpiece! Well done!

First off the dry down in this is just incredible. But before we get there is a magic push and pull between the chill crisp dry frankincense and the warm spiced slightly sweet dragons blood. It starts with a scrub brush desert plains resinous accord. It’s just on this side of bitter but complexly beautiful. It awakens you and lures you in. And soon that gorgeous Yemeni frankincense clears your thoughts and sets the stage. The fragrance takes its time, meditative, and allows you to stay grounded while you experience the transition to that push and pull I mentioned. The push pull is primarily in the sillage - closer to the skin is warmer/Dragon’s Blood etc and further away is cooler/Frankincense etc. Nothing is standing solo but everything is adding to it - oud, cedar, tobacco, saffron... The heart is long and powerful. In the final dry down the benzoin, myrrh and labdanum bring a familiar warm sweetness and the Dragons Blood an equally warm sweet spice, the resins become almost powdery. Your wrist is now totally addictive!

On my skin, this fragrance opens with a mix of Civet and Chili Seed. The Civet gives it an animalic feel, while the Chili Seed adds a spicy kick. There’s a citrusy, slightly piney, and minty vibe from the Hojari Frankincense, which starts the transition to something balsamic and resinous. In the heart, it gets richer. The Dragon’s Blood Resin gives it a deep, resinous feel, and the Saffron comes through with a bold, leathery vibe. The Cinnamon adds a subtle hint of sweetness. The Civet stays in the background, giving some more depth. In the base, it becomes woodier. The Oud and Cedarwood bring a piney, resinous accord that’s earthy, with a very slight turpentine nuance that's not unpleasant. The Tobaccos are dry and earthy. The Ambergris adds some saltiness and depth. On occasion the Civet softly pokes its head out. The Olibanum and Benzoin smooth everything out with a slightly sweet and smoky finish. I wore this outside on a windy day and the wafts from the back of my neck were amazing!

Warm spicy dragons blood and chili balanced by cool frankincense lends to a dry almost desert mental image. Very meditative. As the scent progresses it gets deeper and richer, the saffron comes out and the civet gives added depth. Oud, cedar, and dry tobacco add earthy woody touches, kept in balance by the benzoin sweetness. Ending in a rich, slightly animalic leather accord, I’m left awaiting my next wearing from my sample. This feels familiar and unique at the same time, and it’s among my recent favorites.

There’s something about this one that is similar, yet not similar at all. You can tell you are smelling some unique raw material. The dragon blood resin smells beautiful. I don’t think this would be considered a crowd pleaser, but for the sophisticated people, this one truly stands out. I wore it in warm weather. I would love to try it again when it is cold. Socotra is a wonderful incense based perfume. Slightly dry and soft, and wafts pleasantly over the day. As the notes suggest the dragons blood and frankincense are the main players. The other notes are well blended to complement these. Particularly noticeable are the herbal elements, that really evokes the rocky dry island feeling. Great effort from Rajesh and Hunayn!
