Iron

I ended up trying Iron as part of the Intelligent discovery set and I honestly did not expect it to stand out as much as it did so I had to cop a full bottle pretty much on the spot. I’ve smelled a LOT of aquatic/marine fragrances over the years, including basically every ADG flanker, so I thought I knew exactly what I was getting into here... but this one surprised me. Compared to the ADG line, Iron is most similar to the discontinued Profumo profile, is better in quality than the current Parfum and previous Parfum, and is clearly more complex and day + night versatile than ADG and any of its fresh flankers. Another thing I want to address because I’ve already seen it thrown around a bit... the Acqua di Gio comparison is pretty surface level imo. I get why people say it if they’ve only smelled it quickly or off a strip, but once you actually sit with it, it’s clearly doing something different. Ya, you get that familiar marine citrus opening with the bergamot and lemon, but it doesn’t go super sharp, overly green, or aggressively aquatic like a lot of the ADG line can. It’s noticeably smoother right out of the gate. Where Iron really separates itself for me is in the transition and base. There’s this underlying ambery warmth that starts creeping in pretty early and it basically acts like a buffer for everything. It smooths out the sharper edges that you’d normally get from the marine notes, incense, and green notes. Instead of being spiky and poking out, everything feels more blended and controlled. It actually reminds me way more of ADG profumo special blend than regular profumo, but without that darker, almost gourmand leaning patchouli that special blend has. That chocolatey nuance some people pick up in special blend just isn’t here. Iron keeps things cleaner and more versatile. If I had to describe it simply, it’s like: * Profumo = more marine, sharper incense, a bit rougher around the edges * Profumo special blend = darker, richer, slightly gourmand patchouli smoothing things out, more nighttime leaning * Iron = same smoothness level as special blend, but more fresh, more wearable, and less gourmand-y So you get that “refined” feeling without it pushing too far into nighttime or heavy territory. The fir, incense, and patchouli in the base give it depth, but they don’t take over. They just add structure and keep it from smelling like another generic freshie. I feel like the amber is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here in terms of making everything feel rounded and easy to wear. Performance has been SOLID for me too. Good projection for the first few hours, then it settles into a really nice scent bubble that sticks around and slowy draws closer and closer to the skin as the day goes on. It’s one of those fragrances that people catch in the air and it just smells clean, put together.... and slightly elevated without being loud. It's just such a practical frag and is easily a day to night fragrance. Office safe, gym safe, date safe...whatever. It doesn’t lean too marine, doesn’t go too dark, doesn’t get sweet or cloying. It just sits right in that perfect middle ground. And that’s kind of why I think it works better for most people than something like Profumo or even Special Blend. Those can get a little situational depending on the vibe you’re going for. Iron just works almost everywhere. Overall I was genuinely impressed by this one. It takes a DNA that’s been done a million times and actually refines it in a way that makes it more wearable without dumbing it down. Definitely one of the more surprising standouts from the line for me. 9/10

I feel like Derek purposely made this the gym scent of his fragrance line. This is my go to for that, but it could easily work for any occasion during the day. It lasts about 5 hours on my skin which is pretty good for an aquatic/citrus scent. It smells just as good as any acqua di gio or bleu de chanel and you'll be paying less.

If you take the citruses and incense out of ADG Profumo, you'd basically get this fragrance. Took me a while to figure out what it was though because the scent was very familiar initially, but also rather sour-herbal and green. Fortunately once I dialed it in, there was no mistakening it. Especially since I wore the original ADG edt as well as several of its dupes back in the day. Definitely darker than something like PE's 360 Red, as well as less spicy and more vegetal. Morillas's signature in a lot of his early freshies was his use of sage and rosemary and this fragrance has that exact blend. I've heard some comparisons to L'eau Bleue d'Issey (which I also have) and although it likely shares a couple accords, it's definitely not that fragrance. The Miyake is a straight up woody rosemary-cypress bomb that smells like you took a Christmas tree branch to the face, and this one is more of a dark herbal aquatic. Plus the black bottle colour kind of gives it away. Performance is lower than ADG Profumo (which was a pusher) but I honestly prefer that. Couldn't even stand the edp or parfum flankers, but I can easily stomach this so that's already a win. It's a like, but certainly not as versatile as Hydrogen (YSL L'homme) or Silver (Prada L'homme), or as aquatic as H20 (Invictus Aqua). Of course if you already have the D&G, this would be redundant. Out of the entire line, Carbon is hands down my fav.

Over priced Acqua Di Gio hard pass. Get the gold bottle
