Sagamore

Sagamore is a forgotten gem. It's an 80's scent very nice, refined, gentle and classy. It's not strong, animalic and heavy like many frags of that era; it's a well blended mix of lavender, cinnamon, lilly, geranium, amber and various spicies. I was expecting something more potent but sagamore is very gentle, not weak so the performance is just ok. It's quite rare but there are similar or alternative parfumes to this. For example i can compare sagamore to Tiffany for men(more punchy but more dated compared to sagamore), Chanel pour monsieur concentree( performance slightely better and more oakmossy, so it depends if you like oakmoss) and caron le 3 homme(a bit spicier but quite close). So, the main thoughts are two: first, sagamore is a classy mature scent still wearable today, so not a weird smell here ; second, it's very hard to find but there are similar scents so if you have one of the fragrances i mentioned before it's not stricktly necessary to have it. If you are a collector it's another story. If you are forced to a blind buy keep in mind my advices. Overall, the Truth is: sagamore is great! Se conoscete qualcuno di questi profumi avete una vaga idea della tipologia di odore che potreste trovare in caso di acquisto alla cieca, nonostante i profumi citati non siano esattamente identici tra loro. A me sagamore piace molto, la performance è non particolarmente brillante sulla mia pelle però il profumo merita. Maybe My vote-8, 5 In one word-kindness Alternative - Tiffany for men, Chanel pour homme concentree, caron le 3 homme. The three fragrances are not the same but share the vibe and few notes with lancome sagamore.

I have the later version released as part of a collection, different bottle, and separate Fragrantica page, which I commented on. The note listing in Fragrantica for that newer release of Sagamore is just plain wrong. It should match this original one pretty closely. Or at last the accords I smell seem to match. Sagamore is identified here as a chypre, but a chypre without oakmoss? Lots of designated Chypre these days aren't big on oakmoss. But I think this is far closer to a Spicy Oriental (spicy amber) than a chypre, both in note structure and in actual accords smelled. Lots of spiciness (cinnamon, ginger) and even geranium and carnation have spicy facets (mint, cloves). This has lavender too which gives a nice curtsey to the Fougere without being one. And the floral contribution. Sagamore is VERY nice. A true hidden gem whose scent profile reputedly beat out Pierre Bourdon's formula for what became Creed Green Irish Tweed for Lancome's brief for this fragrance. Sagamore no doubt took inspiration from Chanel Pour Monsieur and inspired the very similar smelling Tiffany for Men. It has some early-in-the-life-cycle similarities to Le Tresieme Homme de Caron, but is much more pleasant in the drydown than the Caron, which turns a bit nasty. I actually would describe Sagamore as sort of a hybrid between Chanel Pour Monsieur and CK Obsession for Men, with a bit of added Animalis. The cinnamon and powderiness strengthens the comparison to Obsession. I wore it yesterday and it had just outstanding longevity. I know why the Green Irish Tweed/Cool Water DNA has been so popular and withstood the "test of time". What I don't understand is why Sagamore and Tiffany for Men have been so readily forgotten. I very highly recommend Sagamore. Maybe I won't be in the market for a $400 bottle of discontinued Tiffany for Men now.

I have smelled so many fragrances that came out of the mid-80s, and I have come to expect a certain character and sensibility. It was a time where masculine fragrance wasn't exactly equated with subtlety, and while there were some compelling and stunning fragrances at that time, they were often those which put a loveable braggadocio above charm and grace. There is however, Sagamore. What a stirring composition, one that makes its presence known, but yields to its wearer. It is not flashy, but it does have panache. A chypre that conjures up the likes of Shalimar, Habit Rouge, Le Troisieme Homme de Caron, but somehow is more nuanced and ethereal than any of these. Take for instance the most dominant note of clary sage, which has subtle, almost tea-like facets that round off the lavender, petitgrain, and bergamot. The spices and florals in the heart are tempered with this styrax, vanilla, and sandalwood, and just when you think Sagamore has dried down to a whisper, its sillage returns and you're reminded of how nuance can help you appreciate the present all the more so, and to use your senses mindfully, moment by moment. A stone cold stunner.

Sagamore is light and sexy at the same time. There is a fair amount of bergamot or petitgrain or both which is lovely. Quality. This is a tiny bit spicy but less spicy than many. Quality ingredients. No cloying musks. Reminds me a tiny bit of Tosca. This can easily translate for a ladies perfume also. There is also a Shalimar sort of quality to it, maybe the mix of lavender, vanilla and citrus. Much lighter than Shalimar though. You can sense the benzoin also in the dry down. I test today a vintage original mini.

A mesmerizing scent of yore. Quite strong, mysterious and masculine leaning. Had I been older than 7 years old back when it was released, I would have probably wore it as my signature. Unfortunately, all I got nowadays is a 5ml promotional bottle which I preciously keep away from light and humidity and only smell once in a while.
