I've got to add my voice to the chorus of others: Mambo is a fun and remarkable little gem. I've personally seen the reaction it elicits and wanted to share one of the most dramatic examples here. But first, allow me to set the table with how I first encountered Mambo. I bought a bottle back when it launched in 2001 when I was 33. I enjoyed it, especially for the price. Frankly, as a Latin music fan and former ballroom dance instructor, I bought it primarily because of the name and the bottle. It artfully embodies 'Cuban motion,' the fluid-yet-angular rib cage isolation and hip movements... the close-couple foot patterns of old-school, Palladium Ballroom-style mambo. When the juice ran out I moved on to more complex and expensive fragrances. I kept that bottle and it sat empty on my dresser among a growing collection of finer products. The bottle was enough, until... a magical night that made me seek out Mambo again. Fast forward 11 years and I was involved in presenting concerts and events... I was presenting a concert by the Mambo Legends Orchestra - a band comprised of veterans of the great mambo bands of the 1950's - Tito Puente, Machito, Tito Rodriguez... I was in the lobby near the box office when Hedrico arrived - one of several prominent veteran regional musicians from the local mambo and Latin-jazz scene who came to see this nationally acclaimed band (note: a documentary on the band just won an Emmy in 2025). Before his wing tips actually hit the terrazzo floor, the automatic doors carried a hint of Hedrico's parfum into the lobby on a crisp fall breeze. The dapper octogenarian knew how to make an entrance: dark gray slacks, camel blazer, white shirt and a muted medium blue ascot... We shook hands and embraced. I noticed he smelled great. Familiar... I took him to the will-call window, then returned to the entrance greeting attendees. Though always friendly with everyone, I noticed all the women on staff were particularly nice to Hedrico. At the box office, ushers guiding patrons towards the escalator... I figured they were just being extra nice to this classy, congenial gentleman. No... After Hedrico headed up to the ballroom, Ann, a lovely, cultured blonde in her early 30's who was working with us part time motioned me back over to the box office and exclaimed: "OMG... that man!", she said, pointing at Hedrico on the escalator. "He smells WONDERFUL!! I want my BF to smell like HIM!" She continued, "The three of us in the booth, we got whifs of it...It's clean, but soooo sexy..." One of the ushers overheard Ann gushing and came over: "Are you talking about the older guy in the tan jacket? His cologne [sic] is incredible! The people standing behind him in line commented on it!" Ann said, "Look, you're friends with him right? Could you please ask him what he's wearing!? Seriously!" I made my way upstairs and found Hedrico at the bar, speaking with several other salseros. Laughing, I told him the impact he'd had on the ladies downstairs and they demanded to know what cologne he was wearing! Hedrico chuckled and said: "What else would I wear tonight? I'm wearing 'Mambo'!" While the telling of this story has been dramatized, the details are absolutely true. I've seen it... 'Mambo' is Magic!

Without a doubt Mambo is one of the most underrated and overlooked gems I've ever encountered. I cannot figure out how this fragrance never generated more buzz than it did. It smells unlike just about anything I've smelled while remaining familiar and cozy. It's warm and spicy and one might very well imagine the motif of a couple dirty dancing. Mambo is something of a kitchen sink fragrance though. Picking out individual notes is a dubious affair at best. Rather, it buzzes as a sort of singular and unified accord. Admittedly this does lead to a bit of boredom with the scent as a whole as it does not really develop or deconstruct through the entire life of the scent. Just the same smell beginning to end. But it is such an absolutely amazing smell that I forgive it for lacking development. Longevity is remarkable. I put Mambo on and still easily pick up on it for every bit of 8 hours and up. This might lead you to believe that it is a powerhouse and I would agree. Yet, strangely, with a few sprays it's always (and I do mean always) wafting up to greet you without knocking you or anyone else's block off. Any scent I've ever used with this degree of longevity and presence generally has me wishing to wash it off before I get a headache. But Mambo just smoothly reassures you that it isn't going anywhere soon. Sillage is just about equal to the longevity. You know where one that is wearing Mambo has just recently been without suffocating the entire room. It's lingering presence isn't loud but gently enduring. Nothing about the fragrance comes across as synthetic whatsoever and coupled with the 'throw in everything but the kitchen sink' approach is testament to the competence of the parfumier that created it, Carlos Benaim, an all star of the fragrance industry. I've noticed just about everything Liz Claiborne puts out, aside from the frequently lambasted Curve and the phenomenon it spurred, is overlooked. Perhaps it's fatigue from the glut of Curve flankers the house continues to pile on. But there's been several other very competent offerings from the house of Claiborne that warrant a second look. Spark and Mambo immediately come to mind with the latter being the better of the two. By all means give this fragrance a try if you like warm and spicy scents. As icing on the cake you can easily find it online or in discount stores for less than 15 dollars. Thumbs up!

I bought a bottle of Mambo circa 2002. Later that year I went to St. Thomas and I brought the Mambo with me; while I was buying a pair of Oakley's in the local sunglass hut, the cashier told me I smelled amazing and gave me her number. (To my chagrin I lost the # before I got back to the hotel room). In 2003 I moved out of my parents and got my own apartment, and sometime thereafter my cat jumped up the Ikea shelves I had mounted in the bathroom and knocked the whole thing down, and the bottle of Mambo broke and spilled all over the floor - the bathroom smelled like Mambo for years. Fast forward to 2024, I had forgotten that Mambo even existed, all traces of it had left my memory. I was shopping around on Amazon, and Mambo popped up on my "Recommended For You" section. All the memories instantly came back to me, and for 19.99 I decided to buy it again. Mambo may be more nostalgia for me, but I find it to be the perfect summery/island scent and every time I wear it, it brings me back to St. Thomas. It's old enough that nobody nowadays has smelled it before, so when I do wear it, I still get lots of compliments. I try not to wear it too often so I don't get noseblind to it, but this is one of the few colognes in my collection that I can't get enough of, and every time I put it on I am in love with the way it smells. I tend to wear it on Fridays, since I can dress down and wear an island-y type of shirt with it, as we're headed off to enjoy the weekend.

I love this like I love gorging myself on pizza and burgers, except I don't hate myself hours later for having made the choice. Yeah, it's nothing groundbreaking, not "smart", but who cares? It's hot! It's like a Himbo in a bottle. And underneath the artificial exterior, you find a genuine warmth that's hard to resist. Speaking of artificial.... The opening is SUPER synthetic, and if it wasn't there, this frag would get heavy use from me. Still, the scent underneath is very very pleasant! I find it interesting that so many are calling it a musk/patchouli bomb, because I really cant stand either of those notes. To me, I mostly get a warm, inviting, sweet sweet cinnamon. It's playful, it's friendly, it's warm. For the cost, you have nothing to lose by trying it. Take it out for a night on the town and tell me you don't feel suave!
