Paloma

Paloma is a cold drink mirage from a desert fever dream. Think: pink grapefruit and mezcal with a sweet orange garnish — heavy on green mango — served on an old cedar bartop with the saloon doors open so the cactus blossomed air gets pushed around by the ceiling fans. It opens with emphasis on a mouthful of mezcal — but a smooth mezcal, vegetal, bubbly, subtly sweet (while some mezcals can be smoky, the old “maestro mezcaleros" of Oaxaca de Juarez say that if a Mezcal has a smoky aura, its poorly made and the smoke is there to hide flaws in the agave). There’s no smoke here. The pink grapefruit fizzes to the top around Minute 2, and through the drydown the cactus blossom pulls neutrality into the mix — it won’t tip floral, but it keeps the citrus from seeping into sour territory. Paloma is a true unisex — one that almost defies clear categorization. It’s fresh and airy with a sophisticated tilt, the kind of fragrance a fragrance-connoisseur pulls out for a road trip through the Mojave.

This is exactly what I’ve been searching for in a citrus freshie—something vibrant and refreshing, but with a twist that makes it truly unique. Paloma is bright, juicy, and invigorating, like the first sip of something ice-cold after a long, sun-soaked day. The grapefruit is crisp and fresh-squeezed—zesty without bitterness—and it’s perfectly balanced by sweet orange, cactus blossom, and that lush green mango. There’s a wild, desert breeze running through it all—a warm Santa Ana wind that adds just enough heat to make things interesting. Then it settles into a stunning drydown of sun-dried Texas cedar and lightly smoked mezcal. Earthy, woody, just a touch smoky, but still sparkling and alive. Citrus, fruity, woody fragrance. I could see some people throwing out an "all purpose cleaning spray" critique. I personally find it pleasant enough. Grapefruit for sure takes center stage. Nothing really complex to dive into but it's a good fresh, clean slightly feminine leaning fragrance ideal for summer months.

when I hear “Paloma”, I travel back to the yawning summer afternoons in Austin Tx, ca 2014-18. theoretically I should love this. I wish it were sharper with a little salt. on the dry down, more of the herbaceous aspects appear and I like it more. I will keep trying this, maybe with a heavier application and more heat.
