Bestia Sacra errs far more on the side of “sacred” than “beast.” The opening can certainly be described as beastly with its overdose of bergamot, nagarmotha, and castoreum. It’s loud, and it’s a lot. The nagarmotha and the castoreum roar in concert, harmonizing the animalics. Castoreum’s animalic timbre is leathery and oily, while nagarmotha’s timbre is the smell of sweat, dirt, and decay. But then quickly we all calm down and relax to enjoy what is really just a civet-forward incense amber. Bestia Sacra is properly musky/civet-y in the dry down, make no mistake about that, but it’s not shouting at you and it does not feel lewd. To newer and modern noses it is probably too much, but those attuned to and keen to the old school ways will recognize this perfume immediately. The frankincense accord is beautiful. Its supple and smooth curves keep the civet accord on the good side of behavior. Your standard amberics of mosses, sandalwood, and labdanum are in the mix to help keep things stately and elegant in the tried-and-true manner of woody resins. There’s not much else to say, really. We’ve had a million and one of these perfumes before, and Bestia Sacra is just as good as any of them - but perhaps that’s why it should stand out today. Very few perfume houses have the cajones to make something like this anymore, even though once upon a time it was the most popular of perfume genres. For the bravery to so blatantly pull from the past, to compose it very well indeed, and then shove it in our faces, bravo, Mr. Bortnikov.

Opening with a pleasant but fleeting burst of tart bergamot and piney frankincense before quickly blooming into the delightful musk bomb the name promises, I find this blend to be light enough to have some mass appeal, and musky enough to satisfy some light to mid-weight musk aficionados—though the more heavyweight of the bunch may find it just slightly wanting. Being among the mid-range myself, I find it quite nice and rather deftly blended, with the aspects of each musk showcased while not overpowering one another. I consider the base to be a perfect general compliment to the heart and head with the cypriol, labdanum, oakmoss, sandalwood and benzoin providing just the right amounts of smokiness, mossiness, woodiness and benzoic facets (cinnamic, vanillic, cola-like) to give the base-like heart notes proper contrast and support. Sillage is low to moderate, longevity high. Will my hunt for a Musk Holy Grail continue beyond this? We’ll have to see... Bravo!

A gorgeous beautifully constructed animalic chypre scent, this is one of the finest releases of this year. What makes this scent so memorable is that in spite of its heavy animalic notes, it unfurls like a luxurious tapestry on your skin in each shimmering delicate layer after layer. The scent opens with notes of bergamot and incense and starts transitioning into a heart of animal musks, slight birch tar and cypriol. Finally it settles on a powdery base of oakmoss, sandalwood, benzoin and labdanum. The slight masculine leaning scent has moderate to strong projection and very good longevity. Absolutely must try for incense and animalic lovers, but those afraid of those two genres please tread cautiously. Fantastic!

Oh my God! What is this addictive stench, what a creation of Maksim, this is so animal in its start that you could invoke the devil himself, so different from the other creations of this same perfumer. Beast Sacra is so primitive, beautiful and full of urine, that you might think that the neighbor's cat came to piss you. Without a doubt, the Italian bergamot it claims to have, perfectly weighs this incredible creation. It is not for the weak its use and if for the strong of animal heart, come and receive an animal shower rain. Cheers!
