Cologne d'Agar

I approached with great curiosity and a bit of caution, not entirely certain what was going to happen. On the face of it, cologne this would not be. It certainly seems to follow the classic chypre cologne structure of a hesperidic top, floral heart, and earthy base. But there is the South Asian oud, which Maxim Bortnikov loves, and he also loves being heavy-handed with it. Cologne d'Agar is also not an EdC or EdT, it's an extrait; an extrait concentration oud perfume called a cologne is a head scratcher even before the finger first presses the atomizer. There is a precedent for this approach though, going back as far as Eau de Guerlain with the desire for a cologne with a lot more luxury and power than the typical cologne varietal can muster. Bortnikov's stylistic approach to his compositions for his own brand has a modus operandi of taking common structures and pushing them towards their extremes, such as with L'Oud Marin - a take on the modern aquatic woody perfume that ended up being anything but.... Approach with caution. The initial sprays immediately confirm suspicions. The sour and bitter bergamot and Sichuan peppercorns lay over the top of a deep earthy woody aroma - but! The sour bergamot's bitter and oily facets in combination with the Sichuan peppercorn's waxy and earthy-fruity facets amplify this aroma and texture of a leather-like muskiness, which seems to be an effect of the top notes of the oud already playing upwards in the perfume. It comes across as animalic without being fecal, funky without being rotting - a very complex musky woody aroma. Saffron helps this along with its own sweet, dried. hay-like and pale, floral, woody aroma. There is a fervent muscularity to the opening that is instantly captivating, but it's the movement into the heart where Cologne d'Agar becomes magnetic. A gorgeous rose accord blooms alongside the standing saffron note along with a warm frankincense. The strange muskiness of the opening has passed, and this heart adorns the base agarwood accord. The South Asian oud material(s) Bortnikov loves to use in his compositions is/are stellar examples of the differences between Arabian and East Asian ouds, the latter focusing on deep woody profiles with a more pronounced floral facet as opposed to Arabian ouds' fruity medicinal, animalic/fecal, and barnyard profile. The more intense floralcy of Bortnikov's Burmese/Thai oud materials push the heart's rose accord into overdrive, and it is stunning. It is one of the deepest, darkest, and woodiest rose accords I've smelled in a long time, superbly elegant and luxurious, but there is a brightness to it as well not only in aroma but also with a slightly gritty texture. This deep and dark rose has a warm golden sun shining down on it, making it sparkle and come alive, thanks to the stiff and wispy hay-like saffron and a sunlit resinous labdanum. The frankincense provides a slight green resinous edge and tendrils of incense smoke both living quietly in the background for even greater breadth, depth, and texture. I was completely taken with Cologne d'Agar in this phase. It transported me to a South Asian temple, roses adorning every surface and corner, incense wafting about, the warm golden sun of the South Pacific beaming through openings in the architecture, earthy green and vivacious soil and plant life hanging in the air from the untouched nature surrounding it all. The final dry down is a heavenly - if also heavy - blend of the Burmese oud along with earthy woods and resins. The agarwood is black like rich compost, and with a sweet buckwheat honey undertone. Sandalwood provides a bright, creamy, and slight rose vibration to the rich earthy woodiness, and cedar a nose-tingling peppery aromatic quality to help boost the brightness and levity. The warm and resinous labdanum and slightly vanillic benzoin adding sunlit and bronzed warmth. The intention of trying to keep this woody base bright and energetic, in the way classic chypre colognes typically are, is mostly successful. The sandalwood and the cedar are critical to this effort, with the cedar also keeping to the slightly gritty texture we found in the heart layer - as if smoothness might equate too much to heaviness with everything in summation. These are big and rich materials, and Bortnikov's style lends to big, opulent, heavy, and dense compositions; Cologne d'Agar cannot help but feel opulent, heavy, and dense despite these efforts, yet it's apparent that Bortnikov has the self-awareness of his style and a keen perception of the materials he's handling by putting heavy reliance on the sandalwood and cedar. The balance leans ever so slightly towards density and opulence. Addictive, invigorating, rustic yet luxurious - like the smell of a freshly constructed log cabin built to be a mansion. I am completely won over by Cologne d'Agar. Each time I wore it during my testing phase ended up being an exercise in self-discipline and restraint, to force myself to focus on the tasks at hand and to stop bringing my arms and wrists to my nose for one more sniff, to not spend many minutes at a time over and over gently plying at it and rummaging through all of its nooks, crannies, broad borders and engulfing depths. It achieves what it set out to do, to be a luxurious chypre that significantly flirts with Oriental codes, but a cologne...? An all-weather chypre? No, I'm not sure about that. Nor do I give a damn. It's gorgeous. It's one of very few times when a perfume went immediately into my full bottle collection with a backup bottle, since I fully intend to wear this very often under any circumstance I can justify.

Every fragrance from Maksim is like a roller coaster of emotions. They start off wild and almost off-putting, but each and every one dry down in such a beautiful, intentional way. Cologne d'Agar is no different. Blind bought on a whim and those first 15 minutes or so were rough until it turned into the most wonderful warm, woody, resinous, amber-y rose

Cologne d’Agar isn’t a cologne in the traditional sense at all; it leans far more toward an amber profile, with a powdery, floral, and lightly spiced character in the opening and heart. The fragrance begins with an explosive saffron note — intense yet clean, with none of the plastic scent or almond tones that sometimes appear in heavy saffron scents. It quickly moves into the main theme: a slightly spicy rose that leans sweet rather than tart, paired with bright, balsamic benzoin and resinous amber, while a touch of dry, lightly bitter oud hums beneath. Once it settles, the notes blur into a harmonious whole — an amber woodiness with just a shadow of rose woven through. Compared to designer fragrances of similar themes, Cologne d’Agar is noticeably “less stable.” Its profile shifts significantly depending on humidity and temperature, likely due to its higher proportion of natural ingredient. The “cologne” in its name may refer not to its style but to its transparency: unlike many “high quality ingredient” niche / artisanal brands known for density and impact, this one remains airy and approachable. Though the central theme is amber, the texture is light enough that even fans of mainstream designer perfumes will find it easy to enjoy. Its smooth yet dynamic evolution leans closer to classic French perfumery aesthetics. The progression is quick — the entire arc unfolds within about three hours. It projects strongly at first, then settles into a polite, subtle drydown. Overall, an excellent scent which can wear daily and a great entry point into this style of perfumery.

A likeable rose fragrance, but there's a big caveat (to my nose). I recently received a discovery set with the entire Maksim Perfume line and, although Cologne d'Agar wasn't amongst the more interesting fragrances from the set, it has been in the back of my head since I tried it on paper and so I decided to wear it today. Cologne d'Agar opens with a blast of saffron over a delicate rose, the opening is spicy, metallic, and in some ways it made me think of how Bvlgari's Sahare opens. After about an hour the saffron is subdued and the rose becomes the new center of attention. Here's where the caveat is because the rose at this stage greatly reminds me of baby wipes, and I hate likening the scent to something like that but the resemblance is so close I can't help but point it out, there's some baby wipes brand that uses a scent that's extremely similar to the light rose in here. It doesn't smell bad by any means, it's simply something that "breaks my immersion" in the scent. A few more hours later the spices return, surprisingly, for one final hurrah, but this time it's not saffron, it's the pepper. Despite the name of the fragrance and the notes, the oud isn't too present at all, a touch of it hums silently in the background, much like other people have pointed out Cologne d'Agar is more ambery than woody/oud-forward. Performance is decent but it could be a bit underwhelming for the price. Projection was moderate leaning more to intimate, but sillage was quite dense for some time. Longevity is decent, it has lasted around 7 hours on skin but it's already a bit faint.

Cologne d'Agar starts off smoky, with a masculine abstract sleekness. A minute or so in, it's realistic saffron, just like in your spice cabinet, with that slightly metallic mouthfeel -- like biting tinfoil -- that real saffron can have. Gradually the saffron gets softer and more buttery, and is joined with hints of a soft, pink, tender rose. The rose blossoms, grows -- and then winks out, replaced by a sort of abstract creamy saffron-tinged chord. The oudh comes back, softly, at this point, with a slightly sour thread of gray smoke. It starts out as an accent to the creamy ivory-beige ambiance, and gradually suffuses through it, giving the whole thing a feeling of gray fog with the sun shining through at a distance. There's a slight funkiness to the oudh here -- think blue cheese -- but it's very well balanced by the creamy ambers. Cologne d'Agar is, of course, not a cologne (those are citrusy fragrances) and it's an unusual take on oudh -- a plush, creamy, pale base, just lightly touched with smoky-funky gray woods. There is something classically masculine about it, especially in the opening -- but it's also a very gentle and mellow scent, even cuddly. It lands in a place I'd almost call "saffron rice pudding", milky and softly spiced and just barely sweet.

Unique uplifting cologne style woody aromatic scent with a touch of Oud. The scent opens with spicy notes of pepper and saffron tempered by some bergamont. The brief heart is an incensy rose. The perfume settles into a powdery woody base of vanilla, oud, sandalwood, cedar, labdanum and benzoin. The unisex scent has moderate projection and good longevity. Overall quite enjoyable, even if not particularly ground breaking for this superb brand. This is one of the few Oud scents in the niche market today that can be safely worn by anyone in any type of setting. Enjoy!

Cologne d'Agar opens with a saffron & pepper blast which isn't pleasant but didn't last long. It dials back somewhat as the rose comes into play. At this point, it reaches its maximum sweetness - not diabetic - but still sweet. As it dries down, the sweetness pulls back a bit and the base notes come into play. This is not an oud stinker fragrance at all. The end result, is a creamy and subtly spicy rose fragrance. It was also fresh and would do well on a warm summer's evening as during the cooler months. It also reminded me somewhat of Signature Halfeti Black Rose - a fresher rose fragrance, although Halfeti doesn't have the premium ingredients d'Agar has. The other difference is that, whereas I like Halfeti and it strikes me as masculine, d'Agar came across a bit too floral and powdery for me and leans feminine. Perhaps if the spice had been dialed up, it would have worked for me. As it is, I'm looking forward to smelling d'Agar on my gf - I gave her my remaining sample. Performance is very good. Still have a very noticeable skin scent after 11 hours and it projected at least 6 feet out for a couple of hours after application.

Being someone that really enjoys Bortinkoff, I have high hopes and expectations for these. This one opens very bright and zesty/aromatic. Saffron, Pepper, Bergamot, and Rose are upfront and personal. One thing this did for me was bring me back to my bakery days when I was a chef and baker. I cant quite tell you what it is specifically, but its reminding me of what it smelled like as a baker. Something bready and aromatic. Very nice. Cologne refers to the type of fragrance and not the concentration or taht its only for "men". Cologne fragrances are typically very citrusy and herbal or aromatic. I think of them as a precursor to fougeres. There is an oudiness to it without being overpowering and gives the rest of the fragrance room to really shine. I applaud the restraint and meticulous attention to the oud note. 7.5/10

A touch of bergamot brightens the edges, but the floral-spiced accord remains the star of the opening. As it develops, the sharpness softens and the scent slowly transitions into that signature Maksim DNA : smooth amber, a powdery sweetness, and a creamy warmth that settles comfortably on the skin. The drydown is a soft, ambery-powdery blend with a silky texture and a gentle sweetness that lingers for hours. A refined take on a saffron-rose opening that evolves beautifully into a smooth, warm amber - unmistakably Maksim.

Hate the opening, love the dry down. The rose heart and oud base are well blended, so the rose never gets too jammy. The problem occurs in the opening 30 mins, where the beautiful harmony is shouted down by an overdose of saffron. Presumably to meet the price point, Maxim has used synthetic (Safraleine?) which smells like wet suede leather. Eventually it settles down and becomes very pleasant, but you need patience. Would love to see it re-formulated without the saffron note.

This came like a surprise. A cologne by name yet an extrait by performamce. It took me several sniffs to figure out the magic happening. Instant rose fusion with my skin was what i was expecting but i was blown by the turns of notes coming up.every few minutes i smell something different. Oh the dense and sweet bases were fighting with my nose. Beautiful creation. Easily top 10 in any collection
