Gypsy

I am so inlove with this scent. It was very unique and bold. It has depth and character. It reminds me of the perfect storyline , giving main character vibes, that can take a turn for the best or worse depending on who you are around. This scent is not just a head turner but because it is also a discontinued Marylin Miglin scent, it makes it even more precious and valuable. This scent deserves a revival. The galanga with the ginger is so sweet yet seductive and not as potent of a ginger as you'd think. The nutmeg and Vanilla play a very primal role within this fragrance; That Jasmine gives the perfect scent mixed with a in depth woody note that is very unrecognizable, yet superb! This is a 5/5 scent! I a completely in love

This opens as a lovely spicy floral, with nutmeg, ginger and honeysuckle all playing together very nicely. Orchid and jasmine add depth at the heart. On me, the dry down smells exactly like a somewhat more subdued version of Alien. That woody jasmine sambac is just exquisite!

I just got this perfume. It's very similar to Mackie by Bob Mackie that I already own. Maybe a litle lighter than Mackie. Spicy oriental. Sweet nutmeg is prominent. I don't smell ginger and musk so much. I keep this but don't buy again.

Gypsy By Marilyn Miglin, I don’t normally write long reviews but it’s hard with this one. I’m going to start out by saying that if you love the perfume, than by all means you should wear it anytime of year. I don’t believe in wearing a fragrance just because it’s Winter or just because it’s Summer. If you’re going to spend your hard earned money on a fragrance, than wear it whenever you want. But with GYPSY, Gyspy just goes well with those cooler winter months. Those months when you are bundled up in a sweater & scarf and walking around town doing Christmas shopping! and all the trees around the plaza are decorated with garlands of red & gold, shimmering with ornaments & glistening lights....you get the picture! Of all my fragrances, I’d have to say that this is the only perfume that just makes an excellent choice for winter! it’s just a very cozy & warm perfume. So I was trying to think of why I felt this way about GYPSY?....Why do I feel this way if I’ve only always felt (and believed) that if you love the perfume, than by all means you should wear it all year-round? Well I found my answer! After taking a closer look at the ingredient list. I noticed that GYPSY contains Nutmeg & Vanilla, two ingredients that you do not see mixed together that often anymore in a perfume. Vanilla of course we see used all the time in the fragrance world. But Nutmeg? and Nutmeg mixed with Vanilla? It doesn’t happen that often. And what are two ingredients that we use a lot more of around the winter & holiday months? you guessed it! Nutmeg & Vanilla!! GYPSY, it’s a great perfume, it only comes in the EDP formulation and you can purchase it directly from the Marilyn Miglin Company. This perfume was a blind purchase and when I first smelled it I immediately recognized the scent. I just knew when I smelled GYPSY that I had owned this one before but I just could not for the life of me put my finger on it. So When this happens, I always let my memories do the job of trying to remember the name of a perfume that I’ve used in the past. Because fragrance & perfumes are very event oriented for me. And of course perfume can be very nostalgic and so every memory that I have of someone or something special has an attached fragrance to it. I can be looking at a photo album, look at particular photo and think to myself “I was wearing this perfume that day” or “my mother was wearing such and such perfume that day” .... Scents are very personal to me. But I couldn't figure this one out, and finally I went to Fragrantica and searched for GYSPY and there I saw it! ALIEN! this perfume smells exactly like ALIEN by Thierry Mugler, which I to love & yes I went through my “ALIEN Phase” and for a good while, I exclusively wore only Alien. Which is why I was surprised with myself when I couldn’t remember the name of it! I had fallen in love with the scent some time ago and used it as my daily fragrance. And yes, I also think ALIEN is a great winter fragrance. I know know that Alien had first been introduced in 2005. But this review isn’t about Alien. Okay I really do hate to say this because I don’t want to knock any perfumers fragrances, however GYSPY is very much identical to ALIEN. Now perhaps Gypsy has a couple different accords. I wanna say Nutmeg & Cashmere are extremely evident here causing its much noticeable warmth. And they’re also both evident in ALIEN as well, however in ALIEN the other accords make it seemingly more sharp. I didn't want this to be a side-by-side comparison of the two Fragrances, but it’s really hard to write an honest review on GYPSY, when they both smell identical. Now I’m pretty sure that the only person that would Ever be able to distinguish & Even be able to point out the difference between these two Perfumes would be the nose of a trained perfumer. Now I’m not talking about your regular fragrance enthusiast like myself or many here on Fragrantica. I’m talking a trained professional. Other than that if you were so blind smell these two together side-by-side it would be nearly impossible. Which is fine. I love The Marilyn Miglin Company and Marilyn has proven herself as a distinguished Perfumer in the cosmetics world. I was very sad to hear of her passing in March of 2022. The benefits of GYPSY are that it’s very long lasting, I love perfume bottles and GYPSY is beautiful. The round glass ball, almost magical crystal ball looking, that’s accompanied by a modernist style double sphered purple cap. I have done the research and all of Marilyn’s fragrances come in the EAU DE PARFUM formulation and so the GYPSY that I’ve purchased is EDP. The “juice” inside the bottle is a dark Amber-Gold in color which almost always is the case when Cashmere, Vanilla, Orchid, Benzoin and Honey-Suckle are a part of the formula that makes up the Perfume. A large 3.4oz bottle of this fragrance cost me $65, directly from the Marilyn Miglin Website. Which considering the costly ingredients that make up the juice, that's a pretty great price! Now when I decided to write a review on this Perfume I did not want it to turn into a competition between both Alien & Gypsy, because in reality both are wonderful perfumes, made by wonderful perfumers. But now that I’ve done a close comparison between both of the ingredient lists, I can easily see, and I mean easily! see how that can happen. And with the fragrances smelling identical to one another, I understand how others might feel the need to add their personal opinions about which one they think is better, but honestly I can’t do that. I’m not going to knock one perfumers fragrance over the other, just because they’re both exactly the same. Because like I said before, Marilyn Miglin is a distinguished perfumer and so is Thierry Mugler. So I’m not doing to do that. If you are a genuine lover of different fragrances, I strongly believe that you’ll love both of them too! And my final decision is; GYPSY is a very lovely perfume, and if you want something that is warm, bold, desirable by others, elegant, that gets you loads of compliments, and a fragrance that has amazing longevity — Than GYPSY is for you!!
