Quartz

When I was in high school, back around 1983, I was an exchange student just outside of Paris and the girl who I was staying with -- Shereen -- gave me her bottles of Hermes Caleche and of Quartz. I remember loving both but ultimately feeling a little dissatisfied with Quartz because while it had all the mossiness of other vintage beauties, it was missing the punch-in-the-nose that I wanted at the time (a la Rochas Femme, or something!). When I saw it on sale on FragNet recently, I remembered how much I'd enjoyed it and since, post-1970's and 1980's, I've grown to enjoy non-power house fragrances, I spent the $26 and ordered a bottle. Well, Quartz is absolutely beautiful -- cool, fresh, and oh-so-mossy -- just as I remembered. Maybe it's the name of it, but there's a minerally quality to it, as well as a freshness that made my daughter exclaim, "It smells like the air at the beach!" To my nose, it doesn't smell like any of the fragrances listed above, but it does share qualities (and some notes) with several other fragrances: the cool oakmoss and peach of Mitsouko, the oakmoss, hyacinth, carnation, and benzoin of White Linen, the honeysuckle and benzoin of Chant d'Aromes, and even the cool mossiness of Rive Gauche (but without the rose). Like all of these, it's so elegant and sophisticated but is less overwhelming or statement-y than Mitsouko, White Linen, or Rive Gauche; in fact, it wears more like Chant d'Aromes, exquisitely light and fresh, but lovely and elegant, great for warm weather. I'm so happy I got myself another bottle, some 35 years later!

Quartz by Molyneaux is categorized as a floral, but this fragrance is a green chypre to my nose. Sparkling aldehydes are the opening notes. Orris root, oakmoss and a hint of ripe melon develop several minutes later, followed by fresh cedar. Overall, Quartz has a dry, herbal composition. Quartz is a refreshing departure from my usual floral fragrances. If you like Calandre, Rive Gauche, or Coriandre, then give this a whirl. Another reviewer mentioned that Quartz was "alive"--which is quite accurate! The beauty of Quartz is that it's versatile (appropriate for boardroom or cocktail party) and affordable. Sillage radiates about 2 feet, but longevity is outstanding (7 hours). Quartz could easily be worn by either sex. Men seem to be drawn to this fragrance. Be prepared to get noticed when wearing Quartz! My husband adores this perfume--and he is incredibly finicky. When I was Christmas shopping this afternoon, a man actually followed me into a store and said "Oooohh. You smell sooo sexy!"

Quartz is suggestive of its name, cool stone, perhaps by a babbling brook, amongst dewy foliage under the morning sun. It is green but also just a shade sweet, crisp peaches and melons seasoned with bitter boxwood and cassis. If effervescence and powdery mossiness could fit into the same room, it would be Quartz. They fit, they mingle, they shake hands, embrace, and then realize they need to turn out the lights. Firmly unisex, an unsuspecting gentleman might come across this handsome bottle with no indication of gender (until its latter iterations where "femme" would be added), ponder its whirlpool vortex cap and sleek modernism and smell it, thinking to himself, "mmm, Eau Sauvage with added dimension and swagger? Don't mind if I do." No matter what the gender, Quartz exudes an understated sophistication underlined by its earthy, woody, outdoorsy dry down. Man, the 70s were a great time for fragrance. A hidden gem.

This scent surprised me in a positive sense. The first few times,I did not know if I would dismiss it once and for all,or at least I`d like it a little. I took out the bottle now and then sprayed a bit thought it was a sharp mourn with hairspray as the "lead singer" of the group. After a few weeks I thought about what,repeatedly smells so fresh, clean,attractive but straightforward. I must have mixed several fragrances and produced this lovely scent..then I tried several fragrances when the opportunity arose,in various places on the skin,and tried to convince me to distinguish where and what I sprayed them! Nowadays I know that it is by no means loud,I can take a ride even if the horse is a bit nervous/inexperienced,without "top gear goes in" before the start..

I received a sample of Molyneux Quartz Pour Femme (thanks Lavallectra) and I like it very much. It opens with beautiful, juicy, tangy citrus with a hefty dose of oakmoss. It reminds me of O De Lancome, which I had in my teens. I think Quartz leans more on the tangerine and oakmoss, and Lancome has more lemon. I'm going to have to re-think my perfume preferences. For many years, oakmoss and I did not get along. Having recently found Vent Vert, now Quartz, I'm keen to explore more chypres and see if my tastes might be changing. We never know when our perfume assumptions will be challenged. Mine certainly have been, and in a good way.

I have used and adored Quartz for about thirty years. That long term is surprising because some fragrances that I loved, I cannot bear now: Ecusson by Jean D'Albret, Robe d'un Soir by Carven, Quadrille by Balenciaga, Boucheron, Fidji. Perhaps, it is because Quartz is not as strong a fragrance. Does anyone know whether the perfumers change the method of making the older fragrances so that they don't smell the same? Are they using chemicals instead of naturals now? I'll have to try Diorella some of you mentioned because I think it is important to change your fragrance from time to time so that you don't lose the scent.

Quartz is a new discovery for me. It reminds me of CD Eau Sauvage, Diorella, Cristalle, Armani Pour Homme. All are classic fragrances with green citrus vibe. I love them all. Quartz is a very good fragrance but doesn't really last a long time as an edp. Perhaps the original formulation from the 70's must have been perfect. I wear this as a man and it is a vintage clean and fresh scent. If you like the others mentioned above, you can blindbuy this with no regrets. Absolutely unisex. A hidden gem.

I would describe this as a green chypre. My nose smells something like a slightly bitter citrus at the top. It is balanced out with an almost sweet patchouli underneath. Gorgeous....so well combined making an interesting interplay between sharp and sweet. This is a timeless fragrance. It has a fresh aliveness to it with a woody sweetness in the background to give it depth. This perfume becomes a soft skin scent rather quickly. I wish that it projected more and had stronger lasting power

For me...This is a classy, sophisticated, timeless scent. It's absolutely beautiful and so feminine. I put this in the league of Rive Gauche and Cristalle. If you like those, you will love Quartz! My mom wore the original and I can detect a difference, truth be told, I prefer this one. Longevity is good but sillage is quite soft on me. This is a classic scent for a classy lady.

This is a very unusual and multi dimensional perfume. I've never smelled something like this before. It's a bit lemony, sweet and bitter at the same time. A very interesting combination. As time passes it becomes sweeter and more feminine. A great perfume with character which if I had to give it a name, I would call it "Different".

One of the most wonderful perfumes in the world, classic, current, modern, inimitable, sexy,,,, There is no other like it, only in its entirety. I love it. Always ask what fragrance you are wearing. unforgettable

My signature scent of the 80's. I thought it was discontinued for I haven't seen it in the 2000's. If I see it again I will definitely buy it. I would call this a WOODY CHYPRE.

Oh Gosh yes this was the fragrance of my youth. When I wore it I felt beautiful n so sexy. Yes n it did make me feel sophisticated n wealthy!

Quite similar to vintage EAU SAUVAGE by DIOR in the drydown and DIORELLA although I don't really smell the "peachy" notes in QUARTZ.

Vintage QUARTZ is very similar to Chanel's CRISTALLE.

1977 Quartz Edp reviewed. Top Notes: Bergamot, Grapefruit zest, Mandarin orange, Lemon Heart Notes : Honeysuckle, Iris. Jasmine Lily of the valley, Carnation, Rose Base Notes: Oakmoss Vetiver, Patchouli Sandalwood, Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice for sweet tones) Please remember in its time, fresh green Chypres were coveted for youth/younger generation. Quartz joins its cohorts of Diorella, Ysl Y, Miss Worth, Calandre, Cristalle and related idea of Ricci Signoricci 2. The note list above is accurate in my wearing of a vintage bottle. Fresh bright citrus lemon, bergamot and bitter grapefruit rind introduce Quartz. A powdery creamy iris sets the stage for the other florals. They smell fresh and blooming like a walk in nature. Green rooty vetiver, patchouli and oakmoss give it the natural green flooring. Licorice adds sweet tones with the honeysuckle to the fresh florals to offset the bitter citrus opening. The LOV gives it a soapy cleaness and the carnation lends more aeromatic like a fresh florists carnation rather than its spicy tones. Sandalwood gives this texture and lends powdery support to the iris in my wearing. This is the Spring, Summer or hot Autumn reach. Yes its an older genre we rarely see anymore but a good pick for hot climates. If you love Chypres..this is your hot weather Chypre as standard Chypres tend to flourish in cooler weather. A refined wear. An echo of when the earth was green, fresh and full of optimism. Quartz edp 1977.

This is a lovely spring or summer perfume. On my skin it opens with a burst of green notes or aldehydes or both, but I see they are not listed in the notes. These are gone almost as soon as they appear, and then I get a brief soliflore, I think it's the jasmine. That is also gone quickly, then the soft blend of orris root, sandalwood, melon and peach appear. The other florals and the oakmoss are faint. I love the opening of this perfume on my skin. Maybe it's a little similar to Cristalle. I bought this blind after reading reviews that it was similar to Diorella. This might be Diorella's shy sister. I like this very much. I may spring for a larger bottle after I go through my mini. It may help with the expense of my Diorella addiction. :) I have reached the drydown just as I have written this, and the oakmoss is stronger now but tempered with the cedar and a bit of benzoin. I get no amber or musk on my skin.
