Marions-Nous

I just had to get a full bottle. This is probably my favorite floral. It has the full package: grandiosity, realism, claws and beauty. it has a vintage abstraction of flowers, something rarely seen in modern perfumery. i already mentioned in my chamade review how modern florals focus on a singular aspect of a singular flower, which is why they tend to smell boring and simple. i think that has also negatively influenced the mass opinion on florals, since people prefer heavy ouds, woody ambers and gourmands (not trying to sound pretentious here, its just the truth). Marions nous does quite the opposite. It combines multiple flowers in their fullest glory, blending all of them together with zero compromise. the jasmine is a true jasmine, the hyacinth is a true hyacinth, the carnation is a true carnation, the ylang ylang is a true ylang ylang etc. each one pops out every now and then, but the full experience consists of a full on explosion of all these flowers. The warm spiciness is that of cloves, which comes from the carnation and doesnt go spice cabinet at all. the civet is very noticeable but mixed with flowers it makes the experience all the more vintage and better. im in love with it. the name is fitting (let's get married), it feels like the height of love between two people who truly adore eachother. its so intense. its not a clean girl floral, its not soft, its the most pungent and sensual and powerful bouquet. I cant stop praising this perfume. Its a classic smelling perfume, so naturally, people may consider this 'grandma floral' (never an issue in my book). but even then, even if you dont like vintage style of perfumery, im sure you will still appreciate sampling this for its sheer beauty and impact. The color id assign to this is indeed a hyacinth purple with yellow sparkles The aldehydes arent too soapy, they are balanced well and only add effervescence to the flowers making them feel more alive. its never boring, never flat, it HITS you with intense desire. a seductive scent indeed. And it has the performance to back it up. Truly an underrated gem from this house.

Oh my, how I love this one. If you've ever had a vintage bottle of Chanel or Guerlain... this is the closest a modern (as in still available today) fragrance has ever smelt to this. A very deep, warm, floral and romantic scent with a strong civet note. So classy, so glamour. It makes you feel like a femme fatale, an old Hollywood actress. If I could bathe in this one, I would! Longevity is great, lasts 8 hours on my skin. Sillage is moderate to strong!

Top tier aldehydic grand dame. The equivalent of nuzzling the powdered bosom of the comtesse. A lady-musk of rich powdery florals drifting about in aldehydic plumes with serious but not offensive civet-y animalic undertones. Sweetness in the base provides a faint, warm foundation over time, but the whole is ruled by floral powder. Very femme but my wife likes it on me. Is anyone seriously comparing this to MKK? Please explain.

The best hyacinth around; hint of carnation in the top, hyacinth, aldehydes and some civet. This is like a soapy vintage fragrance but with a touch more sweetness from the ylang and tonka in the base. It is in the L'Heure Bleue and Bal a Versailles family.

Jasmine, hyacinth, powder and SKUNK! The erstwhile ingenue long past her prime, now all cakey with old makeup and old youthful mannerisms. Playful but with long red claws. Old glamour.

I love this house. Oriza L. Legrand really honors the classics with their artfully balanced structures. These really appeal to those who love vintages but want a clean take with new ingredients; who have suffered through purchases of estate finds only to discover that some of those vintages have soured or are a little discordant with today's sensibilities. Marions-Nous is fresh. Vintage styling leads in character but it gleams with forward-thinking confidence for independent souls who could give a damn about which celeb is endorsing the next issue of the latest department store perfume. Amouage Gold and Dia walk in the same high-heeled wingtips tailored for the modern-classic woman as Marion-Nous. There are also nods to the highly counterfeited vintage Climat, Caleche, and Madame Rochas. The civet is lovely and warm and soon eases into a really smooth, clean soapy musk of tender floral shoots. Airy and soft, glamorous, lots of well blended layers of clean innocence and reticent wisdom. I don't find that this has the throbbing warm floral heart of Chanel No. 5 -- Marion Nous is cooler but it does indeed recall the same womanly character. This is really a wonderful addition to any classic perfume lover's dresser.

Heady, spicy floral opening. I also got some wet dog undertones. Big, old school floral - lots of indolic jasmine, powdery rose, and spicy carnation accentuated by clove. As it dries down the spices, wood and civet becomes more prominent, with the florals playing a supporting role instead of being right in your face; this is where I think Marions Nous really shines. It stays cool, almost dewy, but feels deeper and softer. This is a modern fragrance with a very retro feel. I can see a glamorous 1920's woman - short black bob, cigarette holder, swanning around in a silk kimono (like Phryne Fisher of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries) - wearing this fragrance. Captivating and mysterious.

Over-the-top glamour, like seeing an actress/dancer up close with her stage makeup still on. I don't love the grandma powdery soapy floral opening, but the animalic element keeps it erotic & alluring. it gets better in the dry down: warmer, more natural. semi regret blind buying a full size: it's a bit too mature and old-fashioned Perfume to be my everyday scent. She's Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard (1950) in a bottle. but how can you not love the bottle and tassel

At first all I could smell was soap. Then the hyacinth came through, but to me it's more lilac. Maybe they're so closely related it doesnt matter? Also carnation is present...this house is supposedly based on vintage perfumes from 1700's through the 1920's, and carnation is everywhere in their collection. Anyway, Marion Nous is nice but there's not too much to say about it. I clicked "Like."

extremely old fashioned floral perfume vibes: vibrant jasmine and dewy rose are especially pronunced to me, but it is also fun and skunky. and call me crazy for saying this but something about this harmony is vaguely reminiscent of turpentine to my nose. i think the rose is mixing with something that is leading me astray in the most fun way :)

when i first smelled this, it reminded me of something my grandmother would wear - very musky and powdery. however, after letting it sit on my skin for a while, i find that it has transformed into something reminiscent of freshly-bloomed hyacinths with a lingering civet note. quite pleasantly surprised with this one

Baise-moi the animality of this perfume is a shock, maybe a sarcasm about the virginal white of the wedding dress, because you will only have the bouquet and very few clothes love it

Marion-Nous is a lovely, slightly animalic floral with an old-fashioned vibe, without necessarily smelling vintage. It starts out with a fresh spring bouquet and a suprisingly noticeable dose of civet. It's an optimistic perfume. In the heart I get a little powder, and then some soft iris comes in. Two hours later it dries down into a creamy, powdered tonka. At no point do I really notice spice on my skin. The only thing spicy about it might be a floral spice in the first several minutes--a delicate touch of carnation combined with the crisp, green scent of hyacinth. I saw the notes ahead of time: jasmine, rose, and civet, and I sort of gulped and wondered if it might be too heady and overwhelming. Rest assured, it's not overwhelming at all. In fact, after maybe 20 minutes, I detect no civet at all. It might contain civet, but I don't find Marions-Nous to be a sensual, sexual or risque perfume whatsoever. I find it charming and lady-like. I picture a young lady whose clothing never reveals too much and who always demonstrates that she comes from good family and has polished manners. The kind of girl you can bring home to meet mother.

At first blush, fat, thick aldehydes over a noticeable and very pleasant rose. Aldehydes and powder notes bounce back and forth over the rose. I'm very much enjoying this, it feels like a springtime fragrance. At the moment, I can imagine using up my little 2ml sample with ease. Reminds me of YSL Paris. ETA: wow, I'm really, really liking this! Given that I already have so many aldehydic florals, I can't justify its purchase, but... I will probably purchase a bottle anyhow. Also ETA: Paris is entirely more rose-forward and centered than Marions-Nous. My ex, after smelling me in Marions-Nous said that I smelled like Dove soap (which we use) and added "rose, and..." I could see him searching for the word "aldehydes" and supplied it. So yes, Marions-Nous is an aldehydic rose perfume. I didn't really smell any other notes in it. It was enjoyable, and lasted maybe 4 hours or so?

Update: This perfume announces itself, and I do like a perfume that announces itself. I've added a bottle to my wardrobe, and guess what! Oriza L. Legrand is now putting out 50ml sizes... a bit less painful to the pocketbook.

'Marions-Nous' from Oriza.L.Legrand (2nd review), in getting to know the perfume for some years, imposes now right away as an initial 'foul perfume', probably with the civet in a facet more 'pisseuse' than fecal and immediately blasting away, plus the hyacinth in this watery (not watered-down), thick stemmed flower standing in a vase wilted for quite some time. this is the first impression. the “riz” in 'Oriza' really refers to ricepowder, as with which the Legrand family begun. but here we also have a heady blast of powdery force, powder-power, referring more to the les flappeuses and simultaneously documenting a strong precense of Iris. as such the whole beginning has kept a fin-de-siècle athmosphere and I love it. my brother coming in this morning said 'whew, did you spritzed some perfume ?”, himself idolizing Santa Maria Novella's 'Peau d'Espagna' (civet) and Creeds 'Bois du Portugal'. but it dawned upon me also that this starter up held on to this olphactosphere for quite a while. now it is kind of a signature of Oriza L.Legrand, the powder-power, a civet here and there (I wrote to Fragrantica already again a long time ago that the flacons were updated into beautiful new ones, with tassels as in a Boudoir and that there was a new parfum with civet: “Secret Jolie”, also a civet-flowery parfum, but never got an answer from no one.) now I find these ancient flacons (in which my 'Marions-Nous' is housed beautiful also) as remarkable as mesmerizing, but they now also REALLY got a flabberghasting make-over and with tassel and with beautiful new cartons and with new parfum still not in the database. enfin. Fragrantica states that “Marions-Nous by Oriza L. Legrand is a fragrance for women and men. Marions-Nous was launched in 2014 [i.e. 1928]. Top notes are orange blossom, rose, jasmine and hyacinth; middle notes are carnation, cloves, iris, aldehydes and ylang-ylang; base notes are tonka bean, civet, musk and sandalwood. Only after (more than) an hour or so, the other players get past the Iris-Civet-Hyacinth wall. of course rose, then carnation, jasmine, aldehydes BIG, orange blossom and Ylang-Ylang. then this phase lasts forever and gives great pleasure. it seems already difficult to me to preserve this blossoming cloud for so long as, let's say, the real middle notes. then the base seeps in after hours and hours. sandelwood, tonka beans, musc and cloves (to my nose, in this perfume, not so discernable). ironically, “Secret Jolie” has a lot in common with 'Marions-Nous'. “SECRET JOLY est un bouquet sauvage et sensuel, cruellement animal et tout à fait mystérieux. Construit autour de la fleur de Jasmin Sambac, dont est extrait le précieux élixir, SECRET JOLY révèle de chaleureuses notes animales aux accents miellés et délicatement épicés. NOTES DE TÊTE Précieuses, jasminées, parsemées de fraîches et vertes Jacinthes. NOTES DE COEUR Bouquet poudré d’Ylang-Ylang, de Gardénia , de Tubéreuse et de Jasmin Sambac. NOTES DE FOND Civette, le Miel fondant, les Feuilles de Tabac froissées, le Musc Tonkin, le Benjoin et le Baume du Pérou. it is perhaps more 'jasminée' and balmy, Marions-Nous probably holds its mystique somewhat more. she has the austerity of the 'dames des affaires' that haunted the Parisian nightlife.

Let's Get Married, ...hmm, funny how traditional propriety can now sound almost scandalously foward. Gai! Marions-Nous is the name of one or more traditional French songs, ...and a 1927 novel by Germaine Acremant, set in her hometown of Saint-Omer in northern France, ...as well as plays and films, some based on the novel, others not. ...and, most relevently, an oddly polyfloral perfume by Oriza l. Legrand, first released in 1928. (Yes, it was inspired by the successful novel from the year before). Marions-Nous opens with a flurry of sharp aldehydes, before the lead floral, hyacinth, takes center stage. Hyacinth reads somewhat like a sweeter muguet and can possess some of that same 'cloy' if not blended right. This one is reasonably nice, and the other florals (rose is notable), are there to fill out and cover any gaps. Clove (carnation) adds spice, and whatever Oriza is using for civet does embitter the brew, but not overwhelmingly so. Perhaps that is meant to suggest when the honeymoon is over... Overall this is a pleasantly intriguing revisitation of a thoroughly non-modern fragrance profile, ...but those who commit to fully wearing it must be among the antiquarians still determined to take a last stand against the already fully-encroached 21st Century. Oriza L. legrand sets its reputation on reviving long-gone antique formulae, so the fact that they (seem to) have faithfully preserved some of Marions-Nous' dated and polarizing aspects is testament to their dedication. Such a credible stance will serve them well, ...even though I rather doubt that this particular perfume will ever be among their bestsellers.

This is how to diversify into a classic French perfume when you are a little tired of the experimentation wit CDGs Soda, Akro Bake and even BDK Velvet Tonka. This is a journey back to a very beautiful era I can only imagine. It exudes glamour and the pretty floral opening soon grows rich and carnal in the best, sweetest way. It hangs around and is pretty powerful. I imagine you might scent a scarf for a season if sprayed directly onto it. Not a blind buy unless you love floral classics and know this scent journey. I shall sit it amongst my array of modern and modern classics for days and evenings when I want to feel glamorous in a vintage way. Over a leather jacket, dress and DMs this will balance the edge nicely. Although it could be considered a mature scent I do think worn lightly it would be completely pretty wearable for a female of any age, think light cotton long summer dress. Of course a chap could wear this though they would have to ace a bit of flamboyance in my opinion. The tester box from this brand is delightful and the heritage fantastic. It is, overall a very classic foral. ETA Reader I went full size on this one. A treasure.

Civet, Aldehydes, Hyacinth. in that order 'Marions-Nous' comes up to us. I love this perfume but there are a lot of aspects that would turn many down. it is a Wildly Floral Perfume. Hyacinth, Jasmine, Rose, Carnation, Iris & Ylang-Ylang are all thrown in in a washingmachine of Aldehydes. Civet, Musk, Sandalwood & Tonka Bean lend this unruly lot an eversomuch Adventurous Base. the Hyacinth is here much more prevalent than in 'Secret Joly' (1920). there the Hyacinth is submerged in an Athmosphere of White Flowers. here you can detect either mentioned flower but they are first and foremost defined by Aldehydes & Civet. it is almost an obscene perfume but that is the way I like it. I can certainly understand this is off-putting to others. and it seems to me to be a typical Flapper Perfume. this is Festivity in a bottle.

this is a fabulous perfume where I feel ALL notes coming to the fore within that epic aldehydic blast to then gradually become more discernable with the first headily detectable flower the hyacinth. this already sets the tone for what will be a strong perfume what with all the flowers fighting for attention gives a lovely idea of the les flappereuses and thus, give off a retro feel. to be able to smell each heady flower, rose, iris, hyacinth, carnation, orange blossom, ylang-ylang merits the predicament "masterpiece". of course the entire perfume is also definitely worn as founded by the civet and 12 hours in I could still smell this perfume unablated on my skin. this is the retro neo poison - obsession - giorgio - coco of our times, beheld its older roots while perhaps tweeked for modern thymes.....
