Eau de Metal

One small thing I’d like to clarify first. Just like Calandre before it, Metal, launched in 1979 or even sooner, came as pure perfume and edt from the start; Eau de Metal just like Eau de Calandre were the original edt versions. Metal edt and Calandre edt are later reformulations from the 90’s that skipped the Eau. Also, if you want the real note list for EdM, check the Metal page for the perfume. 1970’s 200ml splash reviewed, rectangular bottle with black plastic/metal cap. Silver/red box with vintage silver PR logo. The opening of EdM feels and smells way ahead of its time. Calandre ushered space age futurism in perfume but Metal cemented it. And EdM smells like hot metal way before it became modern. Aldehydes, cool greens that lack the bite of galbanum and a super potent lilly of the valley that reminds me of Diorissimo but 3D. You don’t get a dark mossy feel, instead it feels like stems, forest floor after a shower. The heart shows us more of the flowers, but they feel aloof and cold. Like a florists but without the artificialness that permeates more modern fragrances. There’s no cellophane or stale vase water; instead, they’re just cooling in the fridge. But at the same time they’re heady if that makes sense. Rose, powdery iris along cooler hyacinths, glimpses of white flowers in all their heaviness playing in tune. Muguet steals the show, but you can sense the rest having a minor spotlight. The base, which btw does an amazing job of anchoring everything on skin for hours, shows us what perfumes were made of; oakmoss galore starts showing up along with creamy sandalwood and a variety of musks, dare I say a smidgeon of civet to bring life to the entire composition? Classic meets modern, hefty base notes allow the cooler and futuristic style to shine, and what now feels avant garde (the hot metal accord in H24 anyone?) here, it shines. Innovative for its time, the metal aspect of Metal and to a lesser degree Calandre, is a play with musks that lacks the exaggeration of newer stuff, has none of the synthetic smell and overall lends a hot iron feel, similar to what aldehydes can do. The whole evolution is covered in this sensual and silky, natural smelling hot metal accord but it never steals the show. In H24, the most recent example I can think of, this feel pierces and takes over, smelling way too dependent on synthetics. In EdM it’s used in moderation, just like salt in food, and manages to convey a hot encounter that started on a Calandre and keeps going forever. It’s Barbarella, getting to know Earth, men, and having fun, never taking of her Paco Rabanne metal incrusted dress! Paco Rabanne was a true visionary, modernist, and his early creations follow a pattern without being redundant. One continues where the other ends, and while Calandre, as the first, took a more classic approach heading towards Calèche territory, Metal, younger and fiercer, follows that path but makes it her/his own. Metal, glass, plexi, you name it. Aldehydes to lift it off, a neon muguet as the star, and clouds of hot steam to take of to a dystopian garden. It couldn’t be more wonderful! Highly unisex, classic and modern, if you guys enjoy Futur (another marvel of the 70’s), Calandre, Fidji, Rive Gauche, Calèche, Y...this is a gem to be discovered! Gorgeous sillage and longevity!

I am wearing Eau de Metal side by side with Metal edt (one one each arm) and EdM starts out much stronger than my Metal Edt, when first sprayed. It really made me feel as if I received a fake perfume, but as it dried down and the gangbuster alcoholic aldehydes settled, it became more familiar to Metal EdT.I like how Metal retains its initial sparkle and I like how EdM becomes more like Metal when drying down. My EdM bottle is not as shown. It is a tall rectangle equal on all sides with each corner cut off. The top is white and the bottle reads from top to bottom of the front: vaporisateur natural spray eau de metal (hyphen over the 'e') PARIS 30 ml 90% vol This is a classic and rare beauty. Get either one if you can. They are going fast.

I get a fabulous blast of aldehydes and galbanum, with a citric sparkle which lasts for an hour or so; an hour of olfactory bliss for this galbanum junkie. Complex florals accompany green notes which are probably coriander and basil. I get hyacinth, ylang-ylang, jasmine and a touch of lily-of-the-valley in a gorgeous, upifting symphony of scent. The notes listed for this fragrance are incomplete; this is a complex, beautifully balanced green-floral chypre in classic 1980's style. My bottle is different to the one pictured; older, tall rectangular glass with red lettering and a black lid with classic 80's metal inlay. Masterful and superb. Wish I could get my hands on a bottle of this that didn't cost a small fortune. I used to wear this, loved it, and I'm wondering if it would still smell as unique. I agree with @Alex1984 who said they think the notes listed might be switched with Rabanne's regular Métal. I was able to get a sample of that, but it smelled foul, sour, and "elderly" on me. Pretty sure it was actually the Eau I used to wear. It was fresh, bright, and yes metallic, yet somehow still a pretty floral without being sweet, with a kind of cute rocker chick vibe on me. I always got compliments.

Just loved this before it disappeared completely from the shops. What's the matter with Paco Rabbane? The only really good stuff they made, like this one and also Calandre, they decided to chuck the formula in the bin. On me, this has a very strong Jasmine note on top of the woodiness and everything else. Priceless. Managed to find two vintage bottles at an outrageously expensive price but had to have it.An absolute beauty and masterpiece of a scent!

I just received a vintage trio of Eau de Metal. Wow....this is gorgeous! It's pretty old vintage as one of the bottles is tarnished but it still smells amazing! I had no idea. I read the reviews and felt I needed this. Well, I'm so happy I was able to snag a vintage. It's just glorious. I only wish the bottle was larger! LOL

PC's 3 metallic fragrances were Calandre, Metal and Eau de Metal - all 3 smelled differently but they still had in common that distinct metallic scent about them. All 3 gorgeous but gone. They can be found online. Some in the US, some in Canada though mostly in Europe.

It's such a shame this fragrance has been discontinued. It still can be found online though. It's sparkling, fresh, effervescent and dewy, like a freshly picked out bouquet of lily of the valley and hyacinth pulverized with a cloud of aldehydes.

Ahead of its time fragrance. Highly futuristic feminine scent - but not unisex. This should be worn by women who evolve with time while still keeping the young, risky girl inside them. Ageless.

A rare treasure, but one definitely worth seeking out. This rather unique release by Paco Rabanne is part of the rich history of the house. It came out in 1986, and was actually, according to some old marketing I found, released "for Men". However, most people would probably agree it is truly Unisex. The bottle I have is not as shown, but instead came in a reddish/silver box with a big silver "Pr" logo on it with the bottle having the large, Vintage "Pr" logo - clear glass with all red lettering, no white border or white cap. The cap is actually black and is as wide as the bottle. You can find what I am talking about on Ebay, hopefully. The notes here are actually wonderful! A vibrant opening of wonderful, fizzy aldehydes, hyacinth (gorgeous here), lily-of-the-valley, tea rose (not dominant), jasmine and a nice note of ylang-ylang as well as a light iris which offers a touch of powder. There is also basil, which adds a nice green, herbal note that balances nicely and carries into the heart of florals. After many wearings side-by-side with Original Metal EdP, I find galbanum in here (showing near the top, but after the aldehydic opening and some florals breathe)...so, transitioning into the heart. Not too resinous or heavy, but present and it stays persistent into the drydown. The base is well done as it doesn't dominate the florals. You will find oakmoss (more of a fixative than a note, but it is there and keeps the green notes alive and the florals fresh), a light "glassy" vetiver and a nice clean white musk that breathes on the skin so naturally. On my skin, I find it to be very fresh and a wonderful radiating aura scent with just a single spray! I have done a wearing (3-4 shots or so) on a warm spring day and it lasted for hours. Definitely a scent for men who want to explore fragrant florals on their skin and don't mind presenting their feminine archetype (as Carl Jung would express). I have a static feminine with a dominant masculine, but I feel totally confident and comfortable wearing this. A composition to admire and one you will not find in today's mainstream boredom. Glorious and harmonious. One of the better (and least known) Paco Rabanne bottlings, Eau de Metal in the clear glass (no white border) and red lettering...I prefer it during Spring, Summer and Fall days - with sunshine! The sensation is one of the flowers opening on your skin when the rays of sunlight interact with this fragrance. I deeply love masculine florals - and this one is even short of that and is fully Unisex (my wife wears it and it smells amazing on her as well). Enjoy...this is truly beautiful!!

Vintage version.Very elegant floral chypre, nothing unpleasent, but classy and lasting.

Gentle Readers, your faithful Eloquaint has a bone to pick with this perfume. I'm a jeweler by trade, and one of my many hobbies, when I was younger, was working on car and motorcycle engines. I know a lot about the smell of metal. Metal that the sun has been beating on, metal that has just had the heat of the torch taken off of it, freshly cast metal, freshly quenched metal, how copper and silver smell when you polish them... Eau de Metal doesn't smell a damn thing like metal in any incarnation that I know of, and I wish it did. I got nervous when I saw that galbanum wasn't listed as a note, because-and I've thought about this-a perfume that was really going to smell like metal should probably be based on galbanum, with oakmoss and a touch of vetiver as well. Come on, Grasse, do I have to do this myself? That being said, it's a perfectly nice scent. Starts out with an intense green, not a sweet green, the initial sweetness is from a light musk, and twenty minutes later it smells of roses. Later on I do get some oakmoss, but what's the point? Feh.

eririco is so knowledgeable and describes a fragrance so well, that I feel like a dunderhead writing anything afterwards. I didn't recognize individual notes in this, myself. When I initially put it on, I thought it was pleasant in a different way. At one point this morning I thought, I like it and I'm glad to have some, but I wouldn't want to wear it too often. I think it was the aldehydes tickling my nose! This isn't so much a wrist sniffer, because the true essence goes away trying to get close to it. Instead wafts of pure beauty would be around me and in short time, I was captivated. The longevity was greater than I expected, I was still getting the occassional sillage at 4 hours. But reapplying was divine, especially after about 20 minutes. It transports you. I think it smells like wind chimes in pure, clean air on a cool spring or autumn morning. Or granite rocks.

Very sophisticated womens chypre scent. Even it is from one (great) perfume era that is behind us, this scent didn't become old-fashioned, but one evergreen which can be worn everywhere and by everyone. Fresh, aldehydes mixed with some floral notes and oakmoss. Quite interesting combination. It's pretty potent, last long and has good projection.

I was a young girl when my favorite uncle gave me this one as a Christmas present. I savored it for special occasions. A fresh, bubbly scent that was too mature for a young girl. Years later, I still remember the smell. Went online & got a bottle; will travel through memory lane. And happy to do it.

Is this the Metal we used to have and no longer can be found? or a different version of the Metal? I remember the Metal I absolutely adored had a green juice, not a yellow one. Whatever the case may be, I just wish they brought that incredible scent back..There is nothing like it.

I have a full bottle of Eau de Metale to sell. A friend's mother closed her perfume shop in 1992. When she passed, he found her old inventory. Unopened and still in cellophane.
