Gothic Bluebell

Gothic Bluebell is unusual. If you can handle the Penhaligon's version, this should be easy for you. If you can't, this might be an interesting experiment. Admission: I can't recall the smell of bluebells and have never smelled a daffodil (not for lack of sniffing), and I won't comment on the accuracy of the rendition. That said, I don't think accuracy was the goal, or at least not the only intended face of this perfume. (I cannot fathom how vanilla is missing from the notes listed above. Mrs. Mountain said, after a rollerball application, from twenty paces: "What's that vanilla perfume?") You know how marzipan can be sculpted and tinted to look just like a flower, or is that a plastic flower? This is a plastic/marzipan/flower. Could be a wonder of nature, a cute edible sweet, or ugly kitsch that will end up harboring dust bunnies under your sofa after your cat gets tired of batting it around. I don't know about gothic, but it does mess with my mind. In an interesting way. Perhaps not in a beautiful way, although I can imagine how some folks might love this scent. I haven't smelled another like it. I suspect that if you smell it, everyone will. Now Mrs. Mountain is saying, "you're going to leave a trail today! I'll just follow your scent if I lose you."

Plastic-like flowers on a couch of leather. The second fragrance from Union I'm testing. Not sure how bluebell nor narcissus or even ivy actually smell, but the hyacinth note stands out in this one. What I get is a rubbery opening that turns into a mix of leather and something like smoky tuberose, not unlike the tuberose/suede/leather combo in Savile Row. If you're into that, check this one out. Beautiful, very flowery and leaning slightly to the feminine side, even though the smokiness gives it a little darker edge. Nice one.

I have never smelled a bluebell in my life although I have seen them often enough. But I can tell you what Gothic Bluebell smells to me like. For me, this is a perfect composition reflecting the inside of a shop selling Indian goods. Loads of stick incense, wooden bracelets, elephant figurines, colourful shawls and saris. It is a scent of Camden Market with its shisha bars and jewellery stands. Funny how not having experience with a scent, in this case bluebell, gives you the funniest connection to what you already know. For me this is a very wood heavy scent with a lot of stick incense and later on hyacinth and narcissus. An interesting scent and quite long lasting, but not quite for everyday wear.

I never heard of this brand until today when I came across it at selfridges. I tried this one but I don't really like it, it reminds me of smoked haddock for some reason. Will try again and see if it changes.
