Rashomon Volume II

Review was long due !!! I happen to be one of the fortunate ones to get my hands on this super limited perfume and I am so glad I have it. In one word it is simply brilliant. I have worn it a couple of times, but only today I could give it a full wearing. I had put on 5 sprays at 8 in the morning and it has a monstrous projection for the initial few hours. I could sniff it even through my N95 mask at work. It lasts a very long time and even at 14 hours at the time of writing this, it is still giving strong whiffs. Taken a bath but I am sure it will last more. And yes, it smells gorgeous. There is long list of notes listed and my untrained nose cannot really pick up one over another. It seems to be very well blended and all of them play harmoniously with each other. Ones that stand out to me are the lemony feel which I get it throughout the life of the frag along with a salty (ambergris – and not at all animalic or fishy to me), almondy (not sure why, but that is how I feel) and amber like accord. There is fruitiness in the initial phase and after that it’s linear on me – And that’s a very good thing. The fruity notes are mellowed down in a very nice way and don’t overpower the opening with a sweet, syrupy or fruit salad type of vibe which most of fruity frags do. And that’s commendable and something that makes the opening very balanced and different from any fruit frag around. A very wearable fragrance and beautiful piece of art in a bottle, something to be cherished for as long as possible. The only sad thing is that very limited bottles around. Hats off to the team at Karmic Hues for pulling this one off.

It is a bright Sunday - perfect setting for Rashomon Vol II Everytime I wear either of the Rashomon twins, I ponder on how the perfumer conceptualized two fragrances that take you on two different olfactory journeys, but using the same ingredients. It's nothing less than art to me. Talking about Vol II, i find it best suited for a bright day with fun activities and one in their best of moods. The journey for me begins with fresh lemon intertwined with fruits & florals, Ambergris plays the supporting charter alongside the fruits and florals. The Fruity floral ambergris continues.. The sex appeal begins when you start noticing the Benzoin, mix of rum n honey being backed by ambergris, Leather and sandal. Note - The fruits are not sugary, artfully blended, nothing pops out. It has taken me two months to understand this one. Very Privileged to have a bottle out of the limited 30 that was produced.

Got a sample of both Rashomons (volume I and II) and tried II first as a challenge, after passing up fruity and sweet perfumes all my life and finding only one review on another site that stated it smelled like “a fruit rollup”. It doesn't smell like fruity candy at all. The notes do boast tons of bright, tropical fruits, but volume II on my skin is more restrained and less bright and saccharine. The mango, guava, and apple do shine through, but they’re softened and tempered by the sandalwood and musk, so it smells less like syrupy cut fruit and more like your hands after you’ve held a load of ripe fruits, fragrant but not sugary or in your face. At first, I didn’t catch the cardamom or the lemon, but it’s been a while since I’ve applied volume II and it’s slowly getting darker and softer, with the leather note emerging after the initial hit of fruits. There’s something about it that reminds me of sandal and rose talc powder, but it’s not a feminine or stuffy scent at all, not with the leather and the musk coming into play. The notes all mesh with each other to create a tempered, easily wearable perfume. Would be great in the summer or fall.
