Graffiti

Vintage. It’s a very natural smell of nutmeg on my skin, but that isn’t everything I love about Graffiti. Is there more to love? Sure! The scent is nutmeg and very much real green apples, wild berries, just as natural (sometimes I feel wild strawberries, sometimes – blackberries or cranberries), something nice and fruity from the tropics (can’t say that I feel any kind of fruit in particular, but a generally fruity tropical smell – that I do find in here, yes), a very beautiful, gentle, yet fragrant rose scent, some great patchouly potency and the wonder of moss.

This fragrance is a rosy aldehydic floral, a cousing to other aldehydic florals of the '60s, such as Madame Rochas, Caleche, Climat, and Calandre. I don't smell nutmeg per se...and I most definitely don't smell papaya or berries. I find it anachronistic to list notes like those latter two for an early '60s perfume - they weren't part of the perfumer's palette during that era, although people might project those smells onto the perfume (possibly mistaking violet for berries?). According to my H&R guide, the notes for graffiti are: Top: Bergamot, Lemon, Orange Blossom, Violet, Gardenia, Galbanum Middle: Jasmin, Rose, Orris, Linden, Ylang-Ylang Base: Oakmoss, Cedarwood, Musk, Civet, Styrax, Sandal Grafitti starts off with a natural, chalky galbanum undergirded by citrus notes & powdery violet -- a combination which very often goes stale in vintage Graffiti and smells like wet cardboard for half an hour or so. But after this rather disappointing phase of top-note degradation, the powdery rosy floral heart of the perfume really starts to come through and the fragrance begins to shine. A subtle vintage gardenia - the same old-school, nose-tickling gardenia note (styrallyl acetate?) that's in Avon Wishing and Ma Griffe - teases at the edge of the sweet '60s musky-powdery rose. The deep drydown of Grafitti is mossy and a bit musty by todays sugary standards. You'll need to find a bottle that has really kept its freshness to truly appreciate all phases of Grafitti because this is one whose opening sharp notes very often go quite stale. If you find one that is exceptionally well preserved - one which doesn't go through that 30 minutes of smelling like cardboard - then consider yourself very lucky. Like Caleche, Madame Rochas and a few others of this type, the pure parfum version is formulated to smell more powdery, while the EDT is more sharp and angular in scent.

Yet another requiem for a fragrance from way back. Why I am so gaga for the perfumes of the sixties and seventies? Perhaps it is the knowledge that once these little vials and bottles are empty then that will truly be the end of an era. I mean really The End. They will never be resurrected in any shape or form. The Talented Noses which created them are gone. The Zeitgeist which inspired them is gone too. The ingredients are banned or too pricey or too allergenic or.... This is is from a miniature so I used this very sparingly. One wants precious stuff to last, you know. I was hit by initial tsunami of green - as was promised by previous reviewers. I also smelled the chalky galbanum as mentioned by Hadas. ( For a moment I was transported back to my first day at school in the seventies. Was my purchase a mistake? Did I want to be haunted by ghosts of frustrated teachers ?) Fortunately that moment passed and I was enveloped in the most delightful fragrance - a joyous symphony of jasmin, ylang-ylang and roses which was nicely grounded in the the most delicious notes of oakmoss, styrax and sandalwood ( to mention but a few) My word, those guys knew what they were doing back in the sixties. One tiny drop and five hours later and I can still smell the most delicate flower garden.

I am a huge admirer of Capucci perfumes. I had all of them with the exception of Graffiti. For years I wanted to get it and finally two showed up on Ebay. I got a 2 oz bottle (no box). When it arrived today I was very excited to smell it. Unfortunately, what I smelled was the usual "rotten bananas" smell that you get from some vintage perfumes. I can hardly recognize the notes that 9-na describes in her post. I had that happening to me before with vintage Fidji, Miss Dior etc. I may have to buy another bottle on Ebay before I judge the perfume. No doubt the bottle I got today had turned. Too bad.

Moi qui aime les graffitis, je voulais ce parfum. Surtout qu'il fait parti de la famille que je préfère soit les chyprés verts. Graffiti c'est le premier parfum que j'ai acheté sur Ebay. Comme je voulais absolument l'avoir et qu'il est assez rare je dois avouer que je l'ai payé assez cher. Cependant ça valait le coût puisque ce parfum méconnu est une pure merveille et c'est tellement moi. Je n'ai pas besoin de me faire créer un parfum sur mesure puisque j'ai Graffiti.

My Mother had this very earthy scent and I still have the distinctively shaped empty bottle. Capucci made some memorable perfumes. The last one I had was “Nuance.” The vintage perfumes had quality and staying power you just do not get in modern perfumes.
