Cape Disappointment

all the bitterness of the sea. this is what i would consider a cold scent, and very marine, woody, and wild. there's not a hint of sweetness to this scent, and i would consider it instinctively masculine. the opening is like a salty ocean spray, with an undertone of brine and musky seaweed. it's somewhat pungent but has a chill humidity to it, much like the northern pacific -- there's nothing tropical or warm in this fragrance. as the scent settles and dries, the sharp woody notes come out. i smell fir and cypress the most. i would consider this a relatively unusual marine scent, with a strong sillage and longetivity. it's a good layering scent, to give a bitter, marine edge to other perfumes. i bought it as a blind buy, looking for something with acridity, and i was not disappointed. however, i would say this is not for everyone.

Incredible scent, a bit funky with the ambergris in there, but super wearable. The cedar and driftwood cause it to lean a bit masculine, more so than others in this house. I own 40+ frags and this is one I drain and refill.

Cape Disappointment is a fragrance that lives up to its name and its intent remarkably. In speaking with the perfumer, Hayden, he shared that the Pacific Northwest served as his primary inspiration - and it shows. This scent opens onto wide, windswept beaches. It captures the ocean in full: bracing marine air heavy with salt, the mineral dampness of driftwood, and the unmistakable funk of seaweed left behind by a receding tide. I asked Hayden whether he’d ever smelled Orto Parisi’s Megamare, because the resemblance is striking. He hadn’t - an interesting reminder of how shared landscapes and sensory memories can independently lead different perfumers to nearly identical olfactory conclusions. Regardless of comparison, this fragrance is stunning. It is not a safe blind buy - it is wet, briny, and unapologetically brash - but it succeeds beautifully in its purpose: capturing a place, a mood, and an image with unflinching honesty.

Testing blind in February, this opened up fresh and green with a slight grass/vegetable element like fresh cucumber or light parsley. There's an underlying earth element but it's mainly pretty breezy. Being disruptive that evening I had to test again, and the second time around got more of a salty deep green vibe like seaweed, minus any sort of fishy or sea elements. So, looking at the notes now this second take feels more reflective. The wood, seaweed, and salt element are upfront in a warm and dark green inviting way, keeping a light breeze, while the musk and amber provide depth. This combination feels a lean towards being masculine, beach shirt unbuttoned, flip flops in hand, and a nighttime beach stroll, not so much an aimlessly wasteful daytime prancing around. Longevity was about the only disappointment, disappeared by the end of the day, with a projection on the intimate side of moderate.
